Abstract: In the summer and autumn, which is the primary cropland planting preparation and harvest time, cropland burning is very common in China. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra active fire product (MOD14) and GlobeLand30-2010 data are used here to analyze the fire activity of the predominant land cover types. A total of 44,852 scenes of MOD14 images and MOD03 images are used, covering the whole of China from 20 May to 31 October during 2010 to 2014. Agricultural burning is a significant contributor to fire activity in China, and accounts for 60% on average of all the fire activity over the last five years. The spatial and temporal distribution of agricultural burning in seven different geographical regions is analyzed in detail. The experiments showed that the Central and Eastern China regions are the largest contributors to agricultural burning, producing 59%–80% of all the agricultural fires. At the national scale, the number of agricultural fire counts peak in June, which is associated primarily with winter burning of wheat croplands.

Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) geological voxel model is essential for numerical simulation and resource calculation. However, it can be challenging due to the point in polygon test in 3D voxel modeling. The commonly used Winding number algorithm requires the manual setting of observation points and uses their relative positions to restrict the positive and negative solid angles. Therefore, we proposed the Winding number with triangle network coding (WNTC) algorithm and applied it to automatically construct a 3D voxel model of the ore body. The proposed WNTC algorithm encodes the stratum model by using the Delaunay triangulation network to constrain the index order of each vertex of the triangular plane unit. GPU parallel computing was used to optimize its computational speed. Our results demonstrated that the WNTC algorithm can greatly improve the efficiency and automation of 3D ore body modeling. Compared to the Ray casting method, it can compensate for a voxel loss of about 0.7%. We found the GPU to be 99.96% faster than the CPU, significantly improving voxel model construction speed. Additionally, this method is less affected by the complexity of the stratum model. Our study has substantial potential for similar work in 3D geological modeling and other relevant fields.

Abstract: Image-based line segment extraction plays an important role in a wide range of applications. Traditional line segment extraction algorithms focus on the accuracy and efficiency, without considering the integrity. Serious line segmentation fracture problems caused by image quality will result in poor subsequent applications. To solve this problem, a multi-constrained line segment extraction method, based on multi-scale image space, is presented. Firstly, using Gaussian down-sampling with a classical line segment detection method, a multi-scale image space is constructed to extract line segments in each image scale and all line segments are projected onto the original image. Then, a new line segment optimization and purification strategy is proposed with the horizontal and vertical distances and angle geometric constraint relationships between line segments to merge fracture line segments and delete redundant line segments. Finally, line segments with adjacent positions are optimized using the grayscale constraint relationship, based on normalized cross-correlation similarity criterion for realizing the second optimization of fracture line segments. Compared with mainstream line segment detector and edge drawing lines methods, experimental results (i.e., indoor, outdoor, and aerial images) indicate the validity and superiority of our proposed methods which can extract longer and more complete line segments.

Abstract: Errors and inefficiency may be caused by manual processing of complex templates for the preparation and management of engineering survey reports. To address this problem, this paper analyzes the multidimensional variable features of professional field documents and proposes a generation model of standardized reports based on a four-dimensional dynamic template. This approach splits the standardized report into multiple parts to construct a hierarchical tree that represents the report structure according to the report rules, then stores the tree in a graph database, and finally generates the desired report dynamically by retrieving the relational tree for the template and obtaining the relevant data. The model has been applied to the engineering geological survey report system and is shown to improve the working efficiency and data accuracy of the report preparation. Results indicate that the model is feasible and effective.

Abstract: With the social and economic development in recent years, human activities have been more extensive and intensified. As a result, ecosystems are damaged to varying degrees, and regional ecological environments tend to be weaker. The socio-ecological system in Aba Prefecture, Western Sichuan Plateau, China, the researched area, also faces increasingly serious problems. To advance ecological civilization development in a coordinated way across the country, the national government and the competent authorities have launched a series of new strategies. Research on socio-ecological vulnerability, a major part of the ecosystem protection and restoration program, is provided with powerful spatial data observation and analysis tools thanks to the invention and development of remote sensing and geographic information system technologies. This study was based on the vulnerability scoping diagram (VSD) framework. Multi-source data such as digital elevation model (DEM), geographical data such as land use types, soil and geological disasters, remote sensing image data, meteorological data and social statistics data from 2005 to 2019 were used to construct the temporal social-ecosystem vulnerability evaluation index database of Aba Prefecture, Western Sichuan Plateau. The spatial principal component analysis (SPCA) is applied to evaluating the socio-ecological vulnerability and analyzing its spatial-temporal variation in Aba Prefecture, Western Sichuan Plateau. To probe into the driving effects of various impact factors on the socio-ecological vulnerability, the Geodetector is used to analyze the driving factors. The ordered weighted average (OWA) method is applied to the multi-scenario analysis of socio-ecological vulnerability in the researched area. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) from 2005 to 2019, the spatial distribution characteristics of exposure and sensitivity in Aba Prefecture were higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest, and the overall spatial distribution characteristics of socio-ecological system vulnerability showed that the degree of vulnerability increased from the north to the southeast. (2) Extreme natural climate conditions play a leading role in the driving of socio-ecosystem vulnerability, followed by human production activities and geological hazards. (3) The degree of social-ecosystem vulnerability in Aba Prefecture will increase with the increase of decision risk coefficient. The results of social-ecosystem vulnerability under the status quo scenario are similar to those in 2010 and 2019, indicating that the selected evaluation factors can reflect the actual social-ecosystem vulnerability. In the sustainable guided scenario and the unsustainable guided scenario, the proportion of the area of the social-ecosystem severe vulnerability level was at the minimum value and the maximum value, respectively.

Abstract: Public participation is crucial in promoting built environment quality. By using Nancuiping park in China as a case study, this research brings attention to the digital twin park compared to the physical replica in a participatory workshop. Using UAV oblique photography, we created a digital twin model of this park and divided it into six layers to better manage and analyze the environment. Bracing the ‘bottom-up’ design philosophy, in the workshop, we analyzed existing issues in the park and simulated built environment changes, taking suggestions and comments from participants into account to support the decision-making of the park’s optimization. Our digital twin model and physical replica were assessed through a questionnaire in which 59 participants used 3 defined indicators: usability, interactivity, and scenario simulation and visualization quality. The results suggest that the physical replica is easier to use in the participatory design. However, the digital twin model can provide better interactivity and efficient scene simulation and visualization quality. The statistical analysis of the relationship between participants’ feedback on the two models and their sociodemographics (age, gender, and education background) shows that age is a barrier to promoting digital twins for older participants. Meanwhile, the digital twin’s highly interactive features and high-resolution visualization capability were attractive to the younger and well-educated participants. Our study indicates future directions to improve the urban digital twin by incorporating human feedback into the urban model, thus establishing a two-way interaction between the digital system, the physical environment, and human perceptions.
