Abstract: The effects of the manganese (Mn) supplemented diets on the level of superoxide anions (O-2) in the hemolymph, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in the muscle of Neocaridina heteropoda were investigated. Manganese sulfate (MnSO4) was added to a basal diet at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100 μg/g. Diets were fed to triplicate groups of shrimp (0.30±0.11 g, 1.4±0.1 cm) in a recirculating freshwater rearing system for 30 days. The Mn concentration in the rearing water, monitored during feeding, was 1.00±0.02 μg/l. O-2 was lower and antioxidant enzyme activity was higher (p 〈 0.05) in shrimps fed Mn-supplemented diets than in shrimps fed the control. Antioxidant enzyme activity reached a maximum when the Mn concentration was 60 μg/g diet.

Abstract: To explore the external morphological differences of golden pompano in different geographical populations, eight quantitative traits of 210 samples from seven golden pompano populations were measured. Multivariate statistical methods, such as principal component analysis, discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, and One-way ANOVA, were used to compare morphological differences among the populations. Principal component analysis extracted the top five principal components with a cumulative contribution rate of 85.79%, of which the first three principal components could explain seven morphological features. The principal component scatter plot showed that the NH, CH, and LL populations had similar morphology. Using the stepwise discriminant method to establish the classification and discrimination functions of the seven populations, the discrimination accuracy of the DL population was 93.3% for P1 and 87.5% for P2, which was the highest, and the comprehensive discrimination rate was 71.4%. The clustering relationship diagram showed that the populations were divided into three branches, and the CH and NH populations were closest. In contrast, the DL and HF populations were farthest from the other populations. One-way ANOVA showed significant differences ( P 〈 0.05) among all traits of the populations, and the morphological differences between the HX and DL populations were the largest. The results of this study showed specific differences in the external morphology of golden pompano among different populations.

Abstract: Golden pompano ( Trachinotus ovatus ) is a commercially important marine fish and is widely cultured in the coastal area of South China. Salinity is one of the most important environmental factors influencing aquatic organisms. In this study, T. ovatus was subjected to the acute salinity stress treatments using four salinity levels of 0‰, 10‰, 20‰, and 40‰ to investigate its physiological and molecular responses. Our results revealed that serum osmolality, Na+, and Cl– concentrations showed a similar decreasing trend after salinity stress at the first 2 h and then increased after 8 h. In particular, the Na+/K+-ATPase alpha 1-isoform (Tonka α1) rapidly responded to changes in salinity levels. In the gills, the expression of Tonka α1 was markedly upregulated at 2 h in all the experimental groups (0‰, 10‰, 20‰, and 40‰). In the kidney, Tonka α1 expression in these experimental groups tended first to increase but then decreased, with its values peaking at 2 h, 4 h, and 8 h, respectively. In the intestine, Tonka α1 responded rapidly to salinity changes and then changed dramatically within 4 h under salinity stress. The Na+/K+-ATPase activity was also affected by the acute salinity stress, and it was higher in the 10‰ and 40‰ groups than in the control group (0 h). Interestingly, Na+/K+-ATPase activity was lowest in the 20‰ group. Our results show the various physiological response of T. ovatus under acute salinity stress and demonstrate that under such conditions, Na+/K+-ATPase is primarily involved in the osmoregulation required to maintain homeostasis in this species.

Abstract: The effects of a selenium-supplemented diet on the antioxidant enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in muscles of the shrimp, Neocaridina heteropoda, were investigated. Purified diets with six levels (0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60, and 0.75 μg/g) of supplemental Se were fed to N. heteropoda for three months. CAT and GPX activity was determined after one month and SOD activity was determined every month. The activity of the enzymes was dose dependant; activity of all three enzymes was significantly higher in shrimp fed Se-sup- plemented diets than in those fed the unsupplemented control diet. SOD activity significantly rose and fell during the three months and was higher in the second month than in the first or third. For all three enzymes, antioxi- dant activity reached a maximum when the Se concentration was 0.45 μg/g.
