Abstract: Mitosis-promoting factor (MPF) is a complex formed by cyclin B (cyclin B) and cyclin-dependent kinase (cdc2). To investigate the role of MPF in the reproduction of Exopalaemon carinicauda, we cloned its full-length cDNA of the Ec-cyclin B and Ec-cdc2 genes. We analyzed their molecular characteristics and expression profiles during ovarian and embryonic development. The results showed that the Ec-cyclin B gene was 1194 bp long and encoded a 397 amino acid (aa) long protein. However, Ec-cdc2 was 900 bp long, which encoded 299 aa with a conserved cyclin binding motif PSTAIRE. The phylogenetic tree analysis showed that Ec-cyclin B had the highest homology with the cyclin B of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (81.06%). In comparison, Ec-cdc2 had the highest homology with the cdc2 of E. modestus (96.80%). Ec-cyclin B showed the highest expression in the ovary, whereas Ec-cdc2 was the highest in the hepatopancreas, followed by the ovary. In the five stages of ovarian development, Ec-cyclin B and Ec-cdc2 expression levels reach the highest at stage Ⅴ(p 〈 0.05). Overall, the expression of these two genes first increased and then decreased at different embryonic developmental stages. Therefore, these findings suggested that cyclin B and cdc2 played an essential role in the ovarian and embryonic development of E. carinicauda.

Abstract: Interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) have been confirmed as vital transcription factors for the immune system, which play a certain role in anti-infection defense, immune regulation, hematopoietic cell development, and maturation of the immune system. In this study, the cDNA of Interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) was cloned from black-spotted frog, Pelophylax nigromaculatus , and termed PnIRF5. The results indicated, the full-length cDNA of PnIRF5 was 2090 bp, and a putative protein of 504 amino acids was encoded. The results of protein domain prediction suggested that PnIRF5 exhibited a DNA-binding domain (DBD), a middle region (MR), an IRF association domain (IAD), a virus activated domain (VAD), as well as two nuclear localization signals (NLSs). Phylogenetic analysis clustered PnIRF5 into the amphibian IRF5 subgroup in vertebrate IRF5 group. The results of qPCR show that PnIRF5 mRNA was expressed in all examined tissues, with higher levels were identified in the kidney, intestine, and lung. The gene expression of PnIRF5 was analyzed in kidney, spleen, and liver of black-spotted frog after challenged with Elizabethkingia miricola , and the maximum expression level of PnIRF5 in liver, spleen, and kidney were 1.80, 2.33 and 2.88 times that at 0 days post challenged, respectively. As indicated by the results, the PnIRF5 protein may take on critical significance in protecting black-spotted frog from E. miricola infection, and they may play a certain role in the immune response of black-spotted frog against bacteria.

Abstract: The present experiment evaluated the effects of dietary copper (Cu) on growth, antioxidant activities, and susceptibility to Aeromonas hydrophila infection of juvenile Oriental river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense, as well as determining the optimal dietary copper requirement. Semi-purified diets containing seven graded levels of copper (2.8, 12.2, 20.9, 29.8, 43.1, 78.9 and 157.1 mg/kg diet) from CuSO4⋅5H2O were fed to juvenile prawn (initial weight 0.101±0.002 g). The weight gain of prawns fed with 2.8-78.9 mg/kg Cu was higher and they had lower feed conversion ratios than the group fed 157.1 mg/kg Cu. Cu concentrations in the hepatopancreas, muscle, and whole body in prawns tended to increase with increased dietary Cu concentration. Hepatopancreas Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and total antioxidant competence (T-AOC) were highest (P 〈 0.05) in the 43.1 mg/kg Cu group. The hepatopancreas malondialdehyde (MDA) content was lower (P 〈 0.05) in the prawns fed 29.8 mg/kg Cu than that in prawns fed 2.8, 12.2, 78.9 and 157.1 mg/kg Cu. After the feeding experiment, prawns were injected with A. hydrophila, and the cumulative mortality rate of the prawns fed with 20.9-43.1 mg/kg Cu was lower than the prawns fed with 2.8 and 157.1 mg/kg Cu. The optimum requirement of dietary Cu in juvenile prawns was estimated at 26.9-27.8 mg/kg diet based on cumulative mortality rate and whole-body Cu retention.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different oils on growth performance of juvenile Anguilla marmorata. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic experimental diets were formulated to contain fish oil (FO), sunflower oil (SFO), peanut oil (PO), corn oil (CO) and soybean oil (SBO), respectively, as lipid sources each at an inclusion level of 50 g/kg. The diets were fed to apparent satiation for 10 weeks, twice a day to triplicate tanks of 30 fish each with an initial body weight 6.00±0.06 g. Weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed the FO and SBO diets were markedly higher than those fed the CO diet, while no other difference in WG and SGR were observed among other treatments. Fish fed FO and SBO diets had better feed utilization than the other diet fish groups. Muscle of fish fed the FO diet had significantly higher levels of C20:5n-3 and n-3/n-6 ratio compared with fish fed vegetable oil (VO) diets, while muscle n-6 PUFA and C18:2n-6 content showed an opposite trend. The present results suggest that soybean oil is a suitable replacement for fish oil for Anguilla marmorata. Abstract: Snowflake, a highly symmetrical hexagram figure, is challenging to be expressed by chemistry/supramolecular chemistry due to the complex structure. Herein, we have constructed super snowflake supramolecules using terpyridine (tpy)‐based metal‐organic building blocks with tpy‐Ru(II)‐tpy and tpy‐Zn(II)‐tpy connectivities through stepwise strategies in high yield. The structures were characterized by multi‐dimensional mass spectrometry and multi‐dimensional NMR spectrometry. In order to address the stability/tolerance of our designed super snowflake structures, ligand exchange behaviors between different supramolecules with various arm length were fully investigated by mass spectrometry. The study revealed that three modes could exist in such binary systems, including full exchange, partial exchange and self‐sorting (no exchange) depending on the length difference of ligands.

Abstract: Three TPE trimers with meta or para linkage modes have been successfully synthesized. When fabricated as emissive layers in non‐doped OLEDs, they all exhibit blue or deep‐blue emissions with maximum current efficiency up to 4.03 cd A −1 , further verifying the facile but ingenious approach by utilizing meta ‐linkage mode in longer conjugated systems.

Abstract: The effects of dietary cholesterol levels on growth, molt performance, and immunity of juvenile swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus, were investigated at four cholesterol levels (0.2%-1.4%) of purified diets. Each diet was fed in triplicate to 18 crabs per replicate for 50 days. Crabs fed the diet with 1.0% cholesterol showed significantly higher (P 〈 0.05) specific growth rate (SGR) than the other groups, who suffered from relatively lower molt death syndrome (MDS). Cholesterol content in the serum, whole body, and hepatopancreas increased in relation to dietary cholesterol. Muscle lipid content was significantly higher (P 〈 0.05) in crabs fed the diet with 0.2% cholesterol compared to the other treatments. Crabs fed moderate dietary cholesterol levels showed higher alkaline phosphatase (AKP) or acid phosphatase (ACP) levels than those fed 0.2% or 1.4% cholesterol diets. The present study also showed that dietary cholesterol supplementation generally increased serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Overall, moderate dietary cholesterol (1.0 %) enhanced the performance of growth, survival, molting, and immunity of juvenile swimming crab P. trituberculatus.

Abstract: Fermentation is considered a promising method to improve the limited utilization of plant protein sources. In the present study, Shewanella sp. MR-7, isolated from the intestine of juvenile turbot, was used to ferment selected plant sources. We investigated the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of three plant sources fermented and not fermented by Shewanella sp. MR-7 in diets of juvenile turbot: soybean meal (SBM), fermented soybean meal (FSBM), peanut meal (PM), fermented peanut meal (FPM), corn gluten meal (CGM) and fermented corn gluten meal (FCGM). The ADCs of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), gross energy (GE), and amino acids(AA)were analyzed. Our results showed that the ADC of the plant protein sources improved significantly with fermentation. Moreover, the FSBM showed the highest improvement for apparent amino acid digestibility while FPM showed the lowest compared with the unfermented plant protein source. In conclusion, our results indicated that Shewanella sp. MR-7 fermentation can greatly improve the ADCs of SBM, PM, and CGM in diets of turbot. This study providedvaluable information for the use of host bacteria as zymocyte in aquaculture.

Abstract: The design of artificial systems that mimic highly evolved and finely tuned natural photosynthetic systems is a subject of intensive research. By incorporating electron‐deficient anthraquinone within the ligand backbone, a redox‐active Ni‐based tetrahedron was developed as a redox vehicle for the construction of an artificial photosynthesis system. The tetrahedron can encapsulate fluorescein within its cavity for light‐driven H 2 evolution, with the turnover number reaching 1200 moles H 2 per mole redox catalyst. This well‐designed supramolecular system displayed a significantly superior activities compared with the reference mononuclear compound or introducing an inactive inhibitor (ATP), which confirmed this enzymatic photocatalytic behaviour.
