    Abstract: The effects of dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) levels on growth performance, whole-body proximate composition, digestive enzyme activities, and gut morphology were studied in juvenile golden pompano Trachinotus ovatus. Six diets were formulated with six levels of ARA. Fish were fed twice daily to apparent satiation for 56 days (8 weeks). Weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and viscerosomatic index (VSI) were significantly affected by dietary ARA levels (P 〈 0.05). WG, SGR and PER increased with the increasing levels of ARA (P 〈 0.05), and thereafter slightly declined (P 〉 0.05); they were highest in fish fed the diet with 0.51% ARA and the lowest in fish fed the diet containing 0.15% ARA. Linear regression analysis on SGR indicated that the recommended optimum dietary ARA level for optimal growth of juvenile golden pompano was 0.53%. Whole body protein significantly declined when dietary ARA levels increased from 0.15% to 0.88% (P 〈 0.05), and were lowest in fish fed the diet containing 0.88% ARA. The whole body lipid content showed an opposite trend compared with whole body protein. Pepsin activities showed no significant differences among treatments (P 〉 0.05), while lipase activities of fish were significantly influenced by dietary ARA levels (P 〈 0.05). The number of goblet cells and intestinal villus length increased with increasing levels of ARA from 0.15% to 0.51% (P 〈 0.05), and decreased thereafter. Goblet cells of fish fed diets with 0.36%, 0.51%, 0.71% ARA were higher than in the other groups (P 〈 0.05).

    Abstract: Leptin (LEP) plays a role in animal growth, appetite regulation, energy partition, and body composition. In this study, 296 cultivated Takifugu rubripes individuals were screened for LEP gene polymorphisms using PCR-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequencing. Two single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutations were detected in T. rubripes LEP gene: C/G at position 232 nucleotide (nt) and C/T at position 310 nt. One-way ANOVA of the SNPs and growth traits showed that genotype CC of primer L2 had a significantly higher body length (BL), body weight (BW), and absolute growth rate of BL (ABL) and BW (ABW) than genotypes CG and GG (P 〈 0.05). The genotype frequencies of CC, CG, and GG were 61.15%, 35.14%, and 3.17%, respectively. Genotype CC at the C232G site was advantageous and significantly associated with growth traits. This site would be an excellent molecular marker to select and cultivate through statistical analysis. Additionally, the second unmutated and mutated mRNA structures were compared and analyzed. These results indicate that the T. rubripes LEP gene may be a candidate for these growth traits.

    Abstract: Enteritis has resulted in large economic losses in channel catfish aquaculture. Yet only scarce information is available on Plesiomonas shigelloides as a causal agent for this disease. In this study, a virulent strain, temporarily named BD1, was isolated from diseased channel catfish suffering from enteritis, and was identified as P. shigelloides through molecular and phenotypic methods. A phylogenetic tree was also constructed to determine its taxonomic position. In addition, the BD1 isolate has developed multiple resistances to aminoglycosides, amphenicols, quinolones, tetracyclines and sulfonamides drugs for veterinary uses in aquaculture as revealed when screened against a range of common antibiotics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of P. shigelloides as a potential pathogen of enteritis in channel catfish.

    Abstract: A feeding experiment was carried out to develop a practical diet with low fishmeal for juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) by substituting fishmeal protein with soybean products mixture. Six isocaloric (17.6 KJ g−1) diets were designed by replacing 0 (FM100), 5 (FM95), 10 (FM90), 15 (FM85), 20 (FM80), and 25% (FM75) of the fishmeal with soybean products mixture (SPM) (soybean meal and soybean protein concentrate). The experiment diets were supplemented with 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, 6% and 7.5% squid paste as attractants or palatability enhancer. The experimental fish (6.9 g) were cultured in sea cages (1.0 m × 1.0 m × 1.5 m) with 25 fish in each cage. Fish were fed the corresponding experimental diets to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding experiment, no differences were found in the final weight and weight gain (WG) of fish fed FM100, FM85, FM80, and FM75 diets (P 〉 0.05). The WG was significantly (P 〈 0.05) better in the fish-fed FM95 diet compared to FM100 and FM75 diets. FCR in diet FM95 and FM90 was significantly (P 〈 0.05) than that of FM80 and FM75, but these values were not significantly different from those in other treatments. Although the condition factor value in diets FM90, FM85, and FM80 was significantly (P 〈 0.05) higher than that of FM100, these values were not significantly different from the rest of the other groups. There was no statistical difference in SGR, FR, VSI, and survival rates among different dietary treatments. The plasma AST activity was significantly lower in fish fed FM90 diet compared to fish fed with control, FM85, FM80, and FM75 (P 〈 0.05). There was no significant difference in plasma AST among all dietary treatments except FM95 and FM90. In contrast, the plasma AKP activity showed the opposite trend. Compared with the control, the fish-fed FM80 and FM75 diets had significantly decreased plasma cholesterol, triglyceride total protein, albumin, and globulin level (P 〈 0.05) while significantly increasing plasma COR levels (P 〈 0.05). There was no significant difference in ALT, Urea and glucose values among all treatments. No statistical difference was observed among the FM100, FM80, and FM75 treatments for those of plasma LYZ activity, C3, and C4 levels. The hepatic T-AOC and SOD activities were significantly increased in fish fed the FM90 diet (P 〈 0.05) compared to those in fish fed with FM100 diet. According to the current experiment, it can be concluded that SPM supplemented with SP could partially substitute fishmeal (25%) for juvenile golden pompano without any adverse symptoms.

    Abstract: Aeromonas spp. are ubiquitous inhabitants of aquatic ecosystems, and are increasingly being reported as important pathogens for aquatic and terrestrial animals, as well as humans. A common bacterial disease caused by A.veronii has appeared in cultured channel catfish producing symptoms of erythema, hemorrhages, skin ulcers and high mortality (˃30%) in China, causing great economic loss. From 2007 to 2013, diseased channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, displaying symptoms of septicemia, ulceration, or abdominal dropsy were collected from Southwestern China. The goals of this study were to identify the bacterial strains isolated from diseased fish and to determine the susceptibility of the pathogenic strains to many currently available antimicrobial agents. 18 bacterial isolates were obtained from diseased fish. Based on phenotypic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, all isolates were identified as A. veronii. These results indicate that the microbiological risk posed by A. veronii is considerable for channel catfish cultured in Southwestern China. Susceptibility of the isolates to antibiotics was tested using the agar dilution method. All 18 A. veronii isolates were sensitive to florfenicol, norfloxacin and chloramphenicol, and were resistant to cefradine, clindamycin, midecamycin, penbritin, and amoxicillin. There were sensitivity diversities of the 18 A. veronii isolates to other test antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole, deoxycycline, gentamycin, tobramycin, and more. This in vitro study provides enough data to recommend the use of these antibiotics for treating infectious diseases caused by A. veronii.

    Abstract: Aeromonas allosaccharophila belongs one of the causative agent of Aeromonas disease in teleosts. Here, we reported on multiple outbreaks of A. allosaccharophila with mortality up to 80% in farmed hybrid sturgeon in Sichuan, China, from 2019 to 2021. This was the first study to A. allosaccharophila from diseased hybrid sturgeons by phenotypic characterization and 16S rRNA analysis. The typical clinical signs of these fish were intestinal segments empty and often with yellow mucus or swelling. Histopathological observation of diseased fish infected with A. allosaccharophila showed the intestinal villus structure disappeared and the intestinal mucosa epithelium was necrotic and shed. Experimental infection indicated that A. allosaccharophila was the pathogen responsible for the mortalities. Antibiotic sensitivity test results showed that A. allosaccharophila was resistant to ampicillin, neomycin, tetracycline, and penicillin, while sensitive to sulfamethoxazole, streptomycin, florfenicol, enrofloxacin, and cefoxitin. Our findings provide references for the disease diagnosis and treatment.

    Abstract: A growth trial was conducted to estimate the optimum levels of dietary phosphorus (P) for juvenile hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus × O. aureus) fed fishmeal-free practical diets. Hybrid tilapia (1.68 ± 0.08 g) were fed diets containing various levels (0.0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8% and 1.0%) of additional inorganic phosphorus for 10 weeks using two different sources of phosphorus:calcium dihydrogen phosphate (MCP), and sodium dihydrogen phosphate (MSP). Hybrid tilapia fed the P-supplemented diets showed significantly higher weight gain (WG) and mineral deposition than those fed the unsupplemented diet. Based on weight gain and vertebral phosphorus content, the available phosphorus requirements of hybrid tilapia were estimated as 1% and 1.31% (0.6% and 0.9% based on additional phosphorus content) respectively, when MSP was used as a phosphorus source. When MCP was the phosphorus source, the requirement estimated for weight gain was 0.95% (0.61% based on additional phosphorus content). In addition, MCP contributed to increased growth and a higher mineral deposition rate than did MSP, in freshwater-reared hybrid tilapia.

    Abstract: Antibacterial properties of curcumin from turmeric (Curcuma longa) and enrofloxacin against Aeromonas hydrophila were assayed. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of curcumin and enrofloxacin against A. hydrophila were found to be 100ug/ml and 9.375ug/ml, respectively. To realize the mechanisms of action of curcumin against A. hydrophila, we researched the antibacterial activity and bacterial membrane permeability of A. hydrophila cells treated with curcumin or enrofloxacin. All results elucidated that curcumin increased membrane permeabilization and caused leakage of intracellular contents, while its role was not as good as enrofloxacin. Moreover, a synergistic effect was shown between curcumin and enrofloxacin. The present study suggests that curcumin extracted from turmeric has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial for the control of A. hydrophila.

    Abstract: Pyrene boxes, self‐assembled from 1,3,5,8‐pyrene‐tetrasulfonate anions, PTS 4− and Guanidinium G + , amino‐guanidinium AG + and hydrated alkali counter cations have been used for the encapsulation of 1,ω‐amino‐acids of variable lengths. The NMR spectroscopy illustrates that these systems are stable in aqueous solution and encapsulation process involves dynamic or fixed guest molecules within Pyrene box, depending of the nature of the counter‐cations. The amide bond coupling between the amino‐guanidinium AG + and encapsulated 1,ω‐amino‐acid guests occur in water in the absence of coupling catalysts. The variable co‐encapsulation of the guests via multivalent stabilizing interactions shed light that chemical selection can be obtained from mixtures of 1,ω‐amino‐acids. Our study involving a comprehensive screening of 18 co‐crystal structures help to understand the in‐situ fixation of 1,ω‐amino‐acid guests and their accurate determination of unconventional structures under confinement.

    Abstract: Ulcer disease has caused significant economic losses in the culture of snakehead fish Ophiocephalus argus (Cantor). Information available on Citrobacter freundii as a possible causal agent for this disease is scarce. In this study, a virulent strain, temporarily named GB1, was isolated from diseased snakehead fish suffering from ulcer disease and was identified as C. freundii through molecular and phenotypic methods. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to examine isolate GB1 and compare it to other known isolates. In addition, isolate GB1 has developed resistance to aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides drugs for veterinary use in aquaculture as revealed when screened against a range of common antibiotics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of ulcer disease caused by C. freundii in snakehead fish. Published
