    Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three complex dietary candidate probiotics (LDJ, LAC, and LJD) composing different candidate probiotic combinations on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, antioxidant parameters, and intestinal microbiota in koi carp (Cyprinus carpio var. koi). After a 60-days feeding trial, samples from the control and three candidate probiotic groups were obtained and analyzed. The results suggested that all complex dietary candidate probiotic treatments (LDJ, LAC, and LJD) improved the growth performance, nutrition utilization, and intestinal digestive enzyme activities compared with the control group. Furthermore, a dietary supplement with LAC or LJD is more efficient in growth and digestive enzyme than LDJ. The antioxidant enzyme activities, including SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), and GPX (glutathione peroxidase), were intensively improved, the GSH (glutathione) contents increased, and the MDA (malondialdehyde) contents decreased to different extents depending on the tissues and kinds of candidate probiotics. Dietary candidate probiotics also regulated the intestinal microbiota composition: LDJ and LAC increased the proportion of potential candidate probiotics and reduced the level of pollutants reducing bacteria and geosmin producer Nannocystis. The LJD group had a similar pattern of the dominant bacteria to the control sample, suggesting a minor disturbance of the gut microbiota of koi carp. Overall, the multi-strain complex candidate probiotics LAC and LJD are more efficient in growth performance and digestive enzymes.

    Abstract: Microbial fermentation techniques are often used to improve their quality, where the keys are fermentation strains and fermentation time. This study studied the interaction between microbiota and environmental (or nutritional) factors and microbiota at different fermentation times to determine the most appropriate time, using lactic acid bacteria as fermentation strains. It can be concluded that fermentation improved the nutritional value of soybean meals. In the early stages of fermentation, debris in soybean meal highly proliferated and destabilized the microbial community, while pH and nutritional conditions played an important role in helping its stabilization. In addition, we must pay attention to the interspecific interactions of microorganisms, which makes it easy to understand how the microbial community maintains community stability. A 4-day fermentation of soybean meal with Lactobacillus is recommended.

    Abstract: The spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) is an economically valuable cultured fish species in China. In this study, 20 novel polymorphic microsatellite loci of L. maculatus were isolated from genomic data and characterized using 40 wild individuals. The number of alleles and the effective number of alleles ranged from 2 to 12 (average of 5.1000) and from 1.180 to 8.000 (average of 3.3097). The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.083 to 0.875 (average of 0.4405) and from 0.153 to 0.875 (average of 0.5633), respectively. Deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed in 11 loci (P 〈 0.05). Polymorphism information content ranged from 0.141 to 0.862 (average of 0.5265) and most loci were heterozygous. Cross-amplification trials in two cryptic congeneric species, the largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, and the barramundi, Lates calcarifer , achieved successful amplification of 16 primers. The microsatellite markers developed in this study could be used for research on genetic breeding of L. maculatus and genetic relationships among tested taxa.

    Abstract: Pond water with algae blooms was collected, and maintained in the dark over a 2-day period without nutritional supplements. The physico-chemical parameters and the density of algae were measured. The concentration of NH 4+-N, DIN and PO4–P in water in darkness significantly increased, and the density of algae decreased significantly. Isolated water was exposed to three bio-remediation water treatments: addition of green algae, Bacillus subtilis and photosynthetic bacteria. After remediation, the concentrations of NH4+ -N, NO3- -N, DIN and PO4- -P in the three treatment groups were significantly lower than the control group. No difference was observed in the concentration of NO2–N between the control group and the photosynthetic bacteria group. Results from all treatments showed water quality deterioration along with increase in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Bio-remediation methods can be effectively adapted in shrimp culture after algae decay, and one of the most promising biological remediation strategies is the use of green algae.

    Abstract: This trial was conducted to investigate the effects of proanthocyanidins (PACs) on the growth performance, digestive enzymes activities and microbiota in the intestines of juvenile American eels (Anguilla rostrata) cultured in cement tanks. Six cement tanks stocked with similar fish size and weight (about 120 g/fish and 2116 kg/tank) were randomly divided into a control group fed with a commercial diet and a PACs group fed with a commercial diet supplemented 400 mg/kg PACs, with three replicates in each group. The trial period lasted 60 days. The finial fish weight and weight gain rate were significantly improved by PACs supplementation (P 〈 0.05). There were no significant differences in feed efficiency and feeding rate between the control group and PACs group (P 〉 0.05). Activities of protease in intestines were significantly enhanced by PACs supplementation (P 〈 0.05), however dietary PACs supplementation had no significant effect on the activities of amylase and lipase (P 〉 0.05). Furthermore, dietary PACs supplementation increased the richness and decrease the diversity of intestinal microbiota. At the phylum level, the higher relative abundance of Proteobacteria and the lower relative abundances of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were found in PACs group compared to control group. At the genus level, PACs supplemented in diet significantly increased the relative abundances of Candidatus Arthromitus, Paracoccus and Eubacterium hallii (P 〉 0.05). In conclusion, dietary 400 mg/kg PACs supplementation improved growth performance and activity of protease in intestine, and modulate intestinal microbiota of juvenile American eel cultured in cement tanks.
