    Abstract: To explore the effect of concentrated dephenolic cottonseed protein (CDCP) partly instead of fish meal on the non-specific immune of Penaeus monodon, we designed a single factor test to study the four types of non-specific immunity of P. monodon hepatopancreas after acute salinity stress. A total number of 5,400 P. monodon were selected with an initial body weight of 1.76±0.15g and randomly divide into 6 groups (3 replicates per group, 900 tails per replicate). Shrimp were feed with two protein level diets (Diet A and Diet B). After 8 weeks of feeding, P. monodon were randomly selected with an average weight of 14.71±1.06g in each feed group, and subjected to acute salinity stress of 10ppt and 20ppt after temporary rearing, and the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), Na+-K+-ATPase, cortisol and the content of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured. The results of the study showed that when the CDCP partially replaced fish meal of P. monodon diet, the hepatopancreas HSP70, and the contents of Na+-K+-ATPase and cortisol were significantly higher than those of the control group. In the acute salinity change, there was no significant difference in the survival rate of P. monodon at 48h under the two salinity stresses, and the four immune indexes showed different trends. The expression level of Cortisol was more prominent than that of HSP70, which could better reflect the stress degree of P. monodon. Most of the indicators showed a trend of rising and then falling and then rising compared with the original level, and the changes of the four indicators of hepatopancreas in the Diet B group were significantly higher than those in the Diet A group at most time point of the two salinities.

    Abstract: The effects of air exposure on the antioxidant capacity of marine gastropod, Babylonia areolata, were evaluated. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) levels in the muscle and hepatopancreas in B. areolata were measured after air exposure and re-submersion. Results showed that SOD activity minimally increased in the hepatopancreas and muscle, after air exposure for 4h. SOD activity in the hepatopancreas was lower than the normal level after 20 h of air exposure and air exposure followed by 4 h of re-submersion. T-AOC levels in the hepatopancreas and muscle of B. areolata decreased significantly (P 〈 0.05) following the period of air exposure. MDA content in the hepatopancreas of B. areolata subjected to air exposure for 24 and 28 h was significantly higher than the normal level. SOD activity in the hepatopancreas and T- AOC level in the hepatopancreas and muscle of B. areolata recovered to the normal level after 12 h of air exposure followed by 8 h of re-submersion. Air exposure can cause oxidative damage to B. areolata. The antioxidative system can be restored after air exposure for less than 12 h followed by re-submersion for 8 h.

    Abstract: The present study was aimed at evaluating the effects of the feed additive curcumin on the growth and non-specific immune responses in juvenile Wuchang bream (Megalobrama amblycephala). Six experimental diets were formulated to contain graded curcumin levels (0, 15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 mg/kg of diet, respectively). After 60 days feeding trial, fish fed the 60 mg/kg curcumin diet had significantly higher weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR), and significantly lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the control group. The number of leucocytes (WBC), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), alternative pathway of complement (ACH50), and respiratory burst activity increased with increasing dietary curcumin levels up to 60 mg/kg, and thereafter declined. Significantly lower alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) activities were observed in fish fed the 60 mg/kg curcumin diet compared to those in the control group. Fish fed with the diets containing 60 and 120 mg/kg curcumin had significantly higher TNF-α and ACH50 activities than those in the control, and the fish fed diets supplemented with 60 and 240 mg/kg curcumin had significantly higher IL-1β activities than those in the control. The results suggest that appropriate dietary curcumin supplementation (60 mg/kg curcumin of diet) significantly improved growth and non-specific immune responses in juvenile M. amblycephala.

    Abstract: Soy protein isolate (SPI) is a promising plant protein source to replace fish meal (FM) in aquatic feeds. This study investigated the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, and intestinal morphology of spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus) fed diets with FM partially substituted by SPI. Three iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic diets were formulated to replace 0, 25, and 50% of FM with SPI, being abbreviated as FM, SPI25, and SPI50, respectively. Each diet was allocated to triplicates of fish for 8 weeks. The results indicated that the weight gain was gradually reduced with increasing dietary SPI levels, as did intestinal trypsin and lipase activities. However, these traits were not significantly decreased until 50% of FM was substituted by SPI. Furthermore, feed intake and lipid digestibility significantly decreased with dietary SPI inclusion. Moreover, replacing 50% of dietary FM with SPI significantly reduced the intestinal villus height and perimeter ratio, whereas these traits did not markedly differ between FM and SPI25 groups. In conclusion, this study indicated that up to 25% of dietary FM could be substituted with SPI without significantly affecting the growth, digestive enzyme activity, or intestinal morphology in spotted seabass.
