    Abstract: We report the syntheses and characterization of two bent dialkoxy‐substituted naphthodithiophene (bNDT) isomers as well as of the corresponding bNDT‐based small molecule and polymer semiconductors for organic field‐effect transistors and organic photovoltaics. The bNDT‐based building blocks exhibit improved oxidation potential and photo‐ and air stability versus the benzodithiophene and linear naphthodithiophene counterparts. Incorporation of the dialkoxy substituents enables film fabrication from solution and control of the molecular solid‐state packing. Among these semiconductors, the polymer P1 exhibits good hole field‐effect mobility of about 0.4 cm 2  Vs −1 with I on / I off 〉 10 4 for low‐temperature annealing. These results indicate that bNDT is a promising building block for optoelectronic semiconducting materials.

    Abstract: An 8 week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary methionine levels on growth, feed utilization, body composition, and morphometric parameters of juvenile yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), and to determine their dietary methionine requirement. Six isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets (405.0 g/kg crude protein and 18.0 kJ/g gross energy) were formulated, and crystalline L-methionine was added to obtain dietary methionine levels of 5.5, 6.7, 7.5, 8.7, 9.5 and 11.3 g/kg dry diet. Fish with an initial weight of 1.4 g were randomly distributed into six groups and fed the respective formulated diets. Increasing amounts of dietary methionine up to 8.7 g/kg dry diet resulted in increased final body weight, rate of weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio however, a further increase in methionine level resulted in a decrease in these parameters. No significant difference in survival percentages was detected among the dietary treatments. A one-slope quadratic broken-line analysis model, based on specific growth rate and dietary methionine levels, indicated that the dietary L-methionine requirement of juvenile P. fulvidraco is 10.5 g/kg dry diet (accounting for 26.0 g/kg of dietary protein).

    Abstract: Krill meal (KM) is a potential feed ingredient that can replace fish meal (FM) in aquaculture. To better understand the efficacy of krill meal, a 200-day feeding trial was conducted with Russian sturgeons (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii). Four extruded diets in which KM replaced 0%, 10%, 20%, or 30% of FM in the formulation were fed to 481 g sturgeons for 200 d. Russian sturgeons that were fed diets containing KM grew as fast as or even better than fish fed with FM control diet. No differences were observed in terms of dorsal muscle composition in the fish fed with diets including KM and those fed with FM control diet. Meanwhile, the fluoride concentrations in the dorsal muscle, liver, and kidney, as well as swim bladder in all dietary groups were below detectable limit. In the gills, skin, vertebral bone and dorsal scutes, the fluoride content from the KM groups progressively increased with dietary fluoride concentration. In conclusion, KM can partially substitute for FM in the diets of Russian sturgeon without affecting normal growth performance.

    Abstract: The spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) is an economically valuable cultured fish species in China. In this study, 20 novel polymorphic microsatellite loci of L. maculatus were isolated from genomic data and characterized using 40 wild individuals. The number of alleles and the effective number of alleles ranged from 2 to 12 (average of 5.1000) and from 1.180 to 8.000 (average of 3.3097). The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.083 to 0.875 (average of 0.4405) and from 0.153 to 0.875 (average of 0.5633), respectively. Deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed in 11 loci (P 〈 0.05). Polymorphism information content ranged from 0.141 to 0.862 (average of 0.5265) and most loci were heterozygous. Cross-amplification trials in two cryptic congeneric species, the largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, and the barramundi, Lates calcarifer , achieved successful amplification of 16 primers. The microsatellite markers developed in this study could be used for research on genetic breeding of L. maculatus and genetic relationships among tested taxa.

    Abstract: The effects of dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) levels on growth performance, whole-body proximate composition, digestive enzyme activities, and gut morphology were studied in juvenile golden pompano Trachinotus ovatus. Six diets were formulated with six levels of ARA. Fish were fed twice daily to apparent satiation for 56 days (8 weeks). Weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and viscerosomatic index (VSI) were significantly affected by dietary ARA levels (P 〈 0.05). WG, SGR and PER increased with the increasing levels of ARA (P 〈 0.05), and thereafter slightly declined (P 〉 0.05); they were highest in fish fed the diet with 0.51% ARA and the lowest in fish fed the diet containing 0.15% ARA. Linear regression analysis on SGR indicated that the recommended optimum dietary ARA level for optimal growth of juvenile golden pompano was 0.53%. Whole body protein significantly declined when dietary ARA levels increased from 0.15% to 0.88% (P 〈 0.05), and were lowest in fish fed the diet containing 0.88% ARA. The whole body lipid content showed an opposite trend compared with whole body protein. Pepsin activities showed no significant differences among treatments (P 〉 0.05), while lipase activities of fish were significantly influenced by dietary ARA levels (P 〈 0.05). The number of goblet cells and intestinal villus length increased with increasing levels of ARA from 0.15% to 0.51% (P 〈 0.05), and decreased thereafter. Goblet cells of fish fed diets with 0.36%, 0.51%, 0.71% ARA were higher than in the other groups (P 〈 0.05).

    Abstract: In this study, the effects of salinity fluctuation on gene expression patterns in ovary and hepatopancreas of Litopenaeus vannamei were analyzed. The expression level of vitellogenin in the ovaries were significantly, markedly, and slightly, inhibited respectively in the hepatopancreas after brooders were transferred from 30‰ to 20‰ or 40‰ salinity for 4 days. The expression levels of the development of germ cell related genes Dmc1, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and cyclophilin A were significantly reduced at 20‰ or 40‰ salinity. The transcript level of shrimp ovarian peritrophin (SOP) was significantly reduced at 20‰ salinity, and the expression level of ovary specific gene mucin-5 AC was significantly higher at 40‰ salinity. Four stress related genes, cytoplasmic carbonic anhydrase (LvCAc), Na+/K+-ATPase alpha subunit (LvNK), V-H+-ATPase subunit A (LvVH), and heat shock protein 90 (LvHSP90), were significantly up-regulated at 40‰ salinity in the ovaries. In the hepatopancreas, the transcript level of fatty acid synthase (LvFAS) was significantly inhibited under 40‰ salinity. The mRNA levels of stress related genes LvNK, LvVH, and LvHSP90, were significantly lower at 40‰ salinity. Results indicated that changes in salinity caused transcription inhibition of germ cell and ovarian development related genes, and the expression patterns of stress related genes in the ovaries and hepatopancreas were quite different.

    Abstract: This study investigated the bacterial composition and inferring function profiles in the biofloc system rearing Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae (PL) at a low salinity condition. PL (~ stage 15) were stocked in four parallel tanks filled in water with a salinity of 5.0‰ at a density of 4000 individuals per m3 for a 28-days culture experiment, during which glucose was added as a carbon source with a C:N of 20:1. At the end of the experiment, water was sampled from each tank and pooled to extract microbial DNA for high-throughput sequencing of the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Results showed that the bacterial community at 28 d was dominated by phyla of Proteobacteria (45.8%), Bacteroidetes (21.1%), Planctomycetes (13.5%), Chlamydiae (10.3%), and Firmicutes (6.8%). A proportion of 81% inferring KEGG functions of this bacterial community is associated with metabolism. Among functions relating to nitrogen metabolism, 48.5% were involved in converting ammonia to glutamate. Still, the proportion of those engaged in transformation among ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate was 18.0%, inferring higher protein-synthesis but lower inorganic nitrogen-transformation capacities of the bacterial community. At the same time (28 d), high levels of total nitrogen (231.3±6.0 mg L-1) and biofloc (127.0±63.0 mL L-1) but low concentrations of ammonia (0.04±0.01 mg L-1), nitrite (0.2±0.1 mg L-1) and nitrate (12.9±2.5 mg L-1) were observed. The results supply a novel insight for understanding bacterial community function in the biofloc system nursing L. vannamei PL at low salinity.

    Abstract: In this study, the growth performance and apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude lipid (EE), gross energy (GE), phosphorus (P), essential amino acids (EAA), and nonessential amino acids (NEAA) for fish meal (local) (FM), soybean meal (SBM), rapeseed meal (RM), cottonseed meal (CM), peanut meal (PM), and extruded soybean (ESB) were determined for red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkia, (weight 5.43 ± 0.21 g), using a reference diet (RF) and test diets (70% RF diet plus 30% of tested ingredient) containing 0.1% Yttrium oxide as an inert marker. The results showed that there was no significant difference in SGR, FCR, and survival among all groups (P 〉 0.05). Apparent digestibility of DM, CP, EE, P, and GE of six feed ingredients ranged from 62.8 to 71.4%, 71.2 to 90.3%, 44.2 to 92.1%, 70.1 to 83.9% and 40.3 to 63.5 %, respectively. From the data for the six feed ingredients, SBM was found to contain the highest ADCs levels in DM (71.4%) and GE (83.9%). FM recorded the highest ADC in EE (92.1%), while PM and CM had the highest ADCs of CP (90.3%), and P (63.5%), respectively. The lowest apparent digestibility of DM, CP, and GE was found in RM, the lowest apparent digestibility of EE was found in ESB, and FM had the lowest ADC of amino acids. Based on the current findings, SBM, CM, and PM could be considered potential substitutes for FM in diets for red swamp crayfish.

    Abstract: A 60-day study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lipid levels on growth, whole body composition and digestive enzyme activity of bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) with initial average weight (3.28 ± 0.11) g. Six isonitrogenous (40.25% crude protein) diets were formulated to contain graded contents of lipid (4.72%, 7.31%, 11.02%, 14.90%, 17.14%, and 19.37%) using corn oil and soybean oil as main lipid source. The results showed that the maximum weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) were recorded at 11.02% dietary lipid level. Significant alterations were demonstrated on whole-body composition by different dietary lipid levels. Crude lipid content of whole body increased in parallel with the increase of dietary lipid levels. Fish fed diet with 11.02% lipid level showed lowest moisture and ash content. The activities of amylase and protease initially increased before decreasing, and the highest activities of amylase and protease were obtained in individuals fed the 11.02% lipid content diet. There were no significant differences in condition factor (CF) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) (P 〉 0.05). Based on the polynomial regression analysis of WG and SGR, this study suggested that the optimum dietary lipid requirement of juvenile bighead carp was estimated to be 7.77%~8.31%.
