Abstract: A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary protein and energy levels on the growth, feed utilization, and body composition of skin carp Hemibarbus labeo. Ten experimental diets with five levels of crude protein (CP) and two levels of crude lipid (CL) were designated as 32%, 36%, 40%, 44%, 48% and 18 MJ/kg,19.5MJ/kg, respectively. Final body weight (FBW) and weight gain rate (WGR) increased, whereas the feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased, with increasing dietary protein level from 32% to 48%. Fish fed the diets containing 44% CP and CL providing 19.5MJ/kg exhibited higher FBW and WGR, but lower FI and FCR. At the end of the feeding trial, the intraperitoneal fat ratio (IPFR) decreased with the increase of CP levels. Significant differences (P 〈 0.05) were found in the carcass composition of fish fed different levels of CP and CL. No noticeable trend was observed for moisture and ash in the carcass. The optimum CP and CL level were found to be 44% and 19.5MJ/kg respectively for skin carp reared in net cages.

Abstract: In this study, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF I) and IGF II in golden pompano larvae were cloned and analyzed. In the first trial, IGF expression during ontogeny of larvae in the first 18-days of their life was explored, and then the response of IGFs to water temperature (23, 26, and 29oC) on 12 day post hatching (DPH) and 18 DPH were compared. On 28 DPH, the response of IGFs to the manipulation of nutrients was evaluated. The expression of IGF I increased with the increase of fish age, and was not significantly affected by water temperature. The expression of IGF II was affected by water temperature on 12 DPH and 18 DPH. The expression of IGF II at 23oC was significantly higher than at 26oC and 29oC. The expression of IGFs in fish larvae on 28 DPH was not concomitant with nutrient manipulation. This study detected the gene expression of IGFs at the early stage of golden pompano larvae. The time dependent expression of IGF genes in fish larvae is important to understand the ontogenetic development and growth of fish larvae in early life.

Abstract: The Indian hedgehog (Ihh) gene in golden pompano larvae was cloned and analyzed. The expression of Ihh during larval fish ontogeny in the first 18 days was examined, and then the expression of Ihh in fish tissues was evaluated on 18 days post hatching (DPH). Subsequently, the response of Ihh to water temperatures of 23, 26, and 290 C was compared on 12 DPH and 18 DPH. The cDNA sequence length of the golden pompano Ihh gene is 1,484 bp with an open reading frame of 1,314 bp. The Ihh gene encodes 437 amino acids and has a calculated molecular weight of 48.175 kDa and a theoretical isoelectric point of 6.22. After hatching, the expression of Ihh increased with fish age and peaked at 3 DPH. After fluctuations between 4 and 12 DPH, the expression of Ihh reached the second peak at 18 DPH. The highest expression of Ihh in tissues occurred in the fish intestine, followed in the stomach on 18 DPH. Water temperature significantly affected Ihh expression. On 12 DPH, the expression of Ihh at 23oC was significantly higher than that at 26 and 29 oC. In contrast, the expression of Ihh at 26 and 290 C was significantly higher than that at 23 oC on 18 DPH. This study detected the gene expression of Ihh at the early stage of golden pompano development and the time-dependent expression of Ihh in fish larvae is important to understand the ontogeny of bone formation in fish larvae.

Abstract: The effect of an electric field on the behavior of premixed methane‐air flames has been studied. A candle‐type flame has been observed experimentally and analyzed for its geometrical proportions under an electric field. A numerical model has been developed to explain some of the experimental observations. The model employs a two‐dimensional cylindrical coordinate system and assumes axial symmetry. The mass, momentum, species, and energy conservation equations are solved by an integrated version of the PHOENICS and CHEMKIN computer codes. It is concluded that the effect of the electric field on the flame behavior is mainly due to ionic wind effects.

Abstract: Acute temperature stress in 15-day post-hatch (DPH) Lates calcarifer larvae was studied using the semi-static bioassay method to understand the physical response of fish larvae to low temperature. In this study, 20oC, 22oC, 24oC, and 26oC were tested and 28oC was the control. Antioxidant enzyme activity including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase, acid phosphatase (ACP), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and digestive enzymes including lipase, amylase, trypsin, pepsin were used as the physical indicators. SOD activities were elevated to scavenge excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) after exposure to lower temperatures, and their activities increased dramatically in relation to the increasing residue time. POD enzyme activity maintained a low level in the early stage of cold exposure and increased to a high level in relation to exposure time. Catalase, GSH-Px, and ACP activities were elevated in fish after exposure to lower temperatures compared to those in fish maintained at 28oC. Lipase activity decreased after exposure to lower temperatures and modestly elevated over time. The highest amylase activity was observed in the control group. However, trypsin and pepsin activity was elevated with the decrease of environmental temperature. Our results indicate that lower temperature significantly affects activity of antioxidant enzymes and digestive enzymes in barramundi larvae. Barramundi larvae exhibited a certain tolerance of low temperature for a short period. Results from the present study will improve our understanding of the physical response of warm water fish to low temperatures and can therefore guide hatchery practices for Lates calcarifer.
