    Abstract: A fern, Pronephrium penangianum (Hook.) Holtt., is a highly reputable medicinal plant in tujia ethenomedicine. It has good effect on relaxing muscles and tendons to promoting blood circulation, stanching bleeding and relieving pain in tujia system of medicine. In order to evaluate this traditional plant in a modern perspective, the current review presents essential aspects of Pronephrium penangianum including traditional uses, geographical distribution, chemical constituents, pharmacological studies and standardization. The chemical composition of the herb comprised of flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans, etc . However, so far there has been few concrete published papers that explicate its chemical therapeutic basis according to Sci‐Finder database and its identification and standardization still remains unknown. This review is intended to summarize the published information of this fern and discuss the current problems for the further studies.

    Abstract: The specific objectives of this study were to determine the optimum feeding frequency in juvenile GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) strain of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), for growth rate, body composition, and gastric evacuation, as well as to investigate the passage of a single meal through the stomach in order to establish gastric evacuation rate. Six treatment groups of juvenile GIFT were fed to satiation with extruded feed, at 6 feeding frequencies: four, three, and two meals a day, and four meals, three, and two meals, every 2 days, for 6 weeks respectively. Each treatment (n=20) was replicated three times. As feeding frequency decreased, the growth rate of the juvenile GIFT decreased gradually. The feed intake of fish fed two meals a day was significantly lower than that of fish fed three meals a day (P 〈 0.05), whereas the feed efficiency ratio of fish fed two meals a day was significantly higher than that of fish fed three meals a day (P 〈 0.05). As feeding frequency decreased, moisture content of fish body increased and the fat and protein contents decreased gradually. Hepatosomatic indices of fish fed two, and three meals a day, were not statistically different to each other or to the remaining groups. The livers of all fish were normal. Gastric evacuation of the fish was best evaluated with the square root model. It was estimated that gastric feed contents gradually decreased and reached the prefeeding level within 15 h. Evacuation of 80% would require 9 h which appeared to correspond with the return of appetite. Our results suggest that two meals a day are optimal for growth performance of juvenile GIFT Nile tilapia.

    Abstract: In this study, the growth performance and apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude lipid (EE), gross energy (GE), phosphorus (P), essential amino acids (EAA), and nonessential amino acids (NEAA) for fish meal (local) (FM), soybean meal (SBM), rapeseed meal (RM), cottonseed meal (CM), peanut meal (PM), and extruded soybean (ESB) were determined for red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkia, (weight 5.43 ± 0.21 g), using a reference diet (RF) and test diets (70% RF diet plus 30% of tested ingredient) containing 0.1% Yttrium oxide as an inert marker. The results showed that there was no significant difference in SGR, FCR, and survival among all groups (P 〉 0.05). Apparent digestibility of DM, CP, EE, P, and GE of six feed ingredients ranged from 62.8 to 71.4%, 71.2 to 90.3%, 44.2 to 92.1%, 70.1 to 83.9% and 40.3 to 63.5 %, respectively. From the data for the six feed ingredients, SBM was found to contain the highest ADCs levels in DM (71.4%) and GE (83.9%). FM recorded the highest ADC in EE (92.1%), while PM and CM had the highest ADCs of CP (90.3%), and P (63.5%), respectively. The lowest apparent digestibility of DM, CP, and GE was found in RM, the lowest apparent digestibility of EE was found in ESB, and FM had the lowest ADC of amino acids. Based on the current findings, SBM, CM, and PM could be considered potential substitutes for FM in diets for red swamp crayfish.

    Abstract: An outbreak of bacterial septicemia in female silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix , which caused significant death of the fish in the Yantian Reservoir, was investigated. The pathogen was isolated from diseased fish and identified as Aeromonas veronii utilizing biochemical characteristics and molecular methods analyses. An artificial infection experiment indicated that the strain caused 100% mortality of juvenile silver carp and mature female fish with eggs but no death of the mature male fish. Silver carp challenged with A. veronii showed similar clinical signs with naturally infected fish. The histopathological study revealed that A. veronii infection caused the increment of hemosiderin granules and the vacuole formation in tissues of the spleen and livers, as well as the collapse, deformation, and disintegration of egg cells. The ACP, AKP, and CAT enzyme activities in the serum of both naturally and artificially infected silver carp were decreased significantly with the severe infection. In this study, A. veronii was isolated and identified as the primary bacterial pathogen causing the mass death of sexually mature female silver carp with eggs in Yantian Reservoir.

    Abstract: The experiment simulated the logistical transportation of Penaeus monodon . It set four distinct gradient Vitamin C (Vc) addition levels, including 0mg/L, 111mg/L, 222mg/L, and 333mg/L, to investigate the impact of Vc on the anti-stress ability of P. monodon during transportation. And the survival rate following transportation and a 15-day interim rearing period were recorded. Moreover, the alterations in tissue structure and activity of the enzymes alkaline phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), and total superoxide dismutase (T-AOC) were checked. The results showed that with the increase of Vc supplemental level, the survival rate of P. monodon after transportation and after 15 days of temporary rearing increased to varying degrees. ACP and AKP in the hepatopancreas increased first and then decreased. T-SOD activity in the 0mg/L group was the lowest and then decreased gradually. The activity of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the 0mg/L group was the lowest and then stabilized. The branchial tissue structure also changed. The branchial tissue blood cell disorder decreased, the diaphragm gradually narrowed, the cornered cortex gradually recovered, and the swelling decreased. In conclusion, Vc positively affects the survival rate of P. monodon after transportation and temporary cultivation and alleviates the stress of P. monodon . The amount of Vc added at about 333mg/Lin, the transportation of P. monodon could play a positive role. The experimental results provide primary data for the transportation of P. monodon .

    Abstract: A novel TRY homolog was cloned in Penaeus monodon by RACE technology, named PmTry (GenBank: KP998480). The PmTry cDNA was 916 bp, which encodes 266 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 28.38 KDa and an isoelectric point of 4.58. Homologous analysis indicated that PmTry shared 42%~91% similarity with other species. The phylogenetic tree showed that PmTry was closely related to Fenneropenaeus chinensis. Tissue expression profiles showed that PmTry was highest expressed in the hepatopancreas and the lowest expressed in the eyestalk nerve. It was expressed in the whole growth stage of P. monodon, but the relative expression level of each stage was significantly different. In addition, PmTry-524 and PmTry-798 were particularly related to growth traits of P. monodon by genotype. The SNP markers may provide a basis for genetic selection and breed improvement studies in P. monodon.
