Abstract:
In the Mss Paris BN lat. 2627 and Paris BN lat. 18304 we find two funeral complaints in honour of Odilo abbot of Cluny : firstly, the Planctus de transitu domni Odilonis abbatis Cluniacensis, a poem which contains 145 elegantly composed dactylic hexameters, paraphrasing the Song of Solomon, and representing Odilo's earthly death as the saint's marriage with Christ ; then, a second poem, entitled Rytmus de eodem patre, which is a simpler rythmical piece based on the same themes. After briefly retracing the history of the poetical genre planctus, this article gives for each text : a new edition, a french translation and a literary commentary, then indicates the reasons for which both poems were written : the first planctus is not, as has often been said, a part of a liturgical or dramatical celebration, but a text to be read ; the second one, intended to be sung (as is pointed out by its versification and by the musical notation which accompanies it in one codex), belongs to the genre chanson.
