Abstract: In this research, the pollen micromorphology of nine species belonging to Honorius, Loncomelos, Ornithogalum and Stellarioides are observed by LM (Light Microscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and two species by TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). Lately, the phylogenetic studies have determined nineteen monophyletic genera in subfamily Ornithogaloideae (=tribe Ornithogaleae). Our results show that the pollen grains characters such as shape, size, exine ornamentation on equatorial surface, sulcus margin exine ornamentation, sulcus membrane ornamentation and lumina number on exine surface are varied among all studied genera. The dendrogram of palynological characters analyzed on LM and SEM observation by MVSP (Multi Variate Statistical Package) software partly supports the monophyletic genera. According to the obtained palynological dendrogram, Loncomelos arcuatum and Ornithogalum sintenisii are placed in one subtype. Based on the sporoderm structure (exine thickness and the endexine type), L. arcuatum differs from O. sintenisii. Finally, the palynological characters can be useful for clarifying the taxonomic relationship in this subfamily.

Abstract: Salvia officinalis L. and Glycyrrhiza glabra L. are two valuable medicinal plants from Kermanshah province in Iran. In this study, chemical analyses of their essential oils were performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the effects investigated on functional response of Habrobracon hebetor Say on larval stage of Sitotroga cerealella Olivier. Accordingly, emerged females of H. hebetor were treated by LC30 of the isolated essential oils for 24 h. Then, six wasps were accidentally selected and introduced to densities of host larvae for 24 h. The results showed that naphthalene, decahydro-4a-methyl and alpha-thujone were dominant compounds in both essential oils, respectively. Holling model (1959) by using regression analyses confirmed functional response type III in the control wasps and type II in both essential oils treatments. The highest and lowest attack rates were observed in the control wasps (0.0443 ± 0.00278 h-1) and S. officinalis treatment (0.0349 ± 0.00257 h-1), respectively. Moreover, the treated wasps by G. glabra essential oil showed shorter handling time than S. officinalis treatment (0.4497 ± 0.0373 h versus 0.5196 ± 0.0589 h). Accordingly, G. glabra due to lower negative effects on the functional response of H. hebetor was more compatible than S. officinalis for their combination in integrated pest management schedules.

Abstract: Nine species from genera including Aloe, Asphodelus, Eremurus, and Hemerocallis (from subfamilies Asphodeloideae and Hemerocallidoideae) were examined by LM (Light Microscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Moreover, two species from Aloe and Eremurus were selected (Aloe vera and Eremurus spectabilis) and examined by TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). Our results showed that some qualitative (exine ornamentation from central and distal regions of the pollen grains and sulcus margin exine ornamentation) and all quantitative characteristics were varied. Dendrogram of the palynological characteristics constructed three pollen types (type 1 or Eremurus-Aloe type, type 2 or Asphodelus type, and type 3 or Hemerocallis type) that partly supported the genera level of the cladogram resulted from recent phylogenetical research and taxonomical issues. Also, the situation of subgenera from Eremurus was heterogenous in the palynological dendrogram. The studied species of Aloe and Eremurus were placed in type 1. The ultrastructure data, such as sporoderm thickness and number of intine layers in the sulcus margin region provided a better resolution for their differentiation from two selected species of these genera.
