Abstract:
Premature leaf senescence has a great impact on grain yield of maize. However, the molecular mechanism of leaf senescence in maize remains largely unknown. Here we report the identification of a novel senescence‐associated maize NAC transcription factor, ZmNAC126 , whose transcription was closely associated with the progression of natural leaf senescence. Further analysis revealed that ZmNAC126 accelerates natural and ethylene‐induced chlorophyll degradation and leaf senescence by directly activating the transcription of maize chlorophyll catabolic genes, including ZmNYE1 , ZmNYC1 , ZmPAO and ZmRCCR . Our work may shed light on genetic improvement of grain yield and seed endosperm development of maize.
