Abstract: In the contemporary work environment, which is characterized by change and uncertainty, employees must proactively manage their careers to develop and maintain their competitiveness. Drawing on self-determination theory, this study developed an interactive model that uses job autonomy, supervisor support, and calling to predict career self-management. With a sample of 245 full-time employees in China, the time-lagged survey showed that job autonomy has a direct effect on career self-management, which is moderated by supervisor support and employees’ calling. Furthermore, the three-way interaction indicated that the moderating effect of supervisor support on the relationship between job autonomy and career self-management is stronger when calling is low. Finally, the implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of emotional design on learners’ performance and emotions. If emotional design has any effects on learners’ performance and emotions, then we attempted to explore dimensions that are accounted for such effects. 316 Chinese university students participated in this study. The students were divided into two groups: NED group - students in this group learned material based on neutral design, and PED group - students in this group learned material based on positive design. We explored the differences between two groups in student learning performance as well as emotion. Prior knowledge, retention, and transfer tests were also carried out and outcomes were compared across two groups. In addition, student emotion was measured using a positive affect scale and biofeedback instruments. The results showed that PED group outperformed NED group on retention and transfer tests. However, insignificant difference was found between two groups on student emotion. Our results suggest that, although the effect of emotional design was insignificant on student emotion, it was significant on student learning performance (i.e. on retention and transfer tests). Based on our results, several implications were drawn and suggestions were made for educators and researchers.

Abstract: Characterized with in-depth interactions and self-reflections, slow tourism has been gaining growing popularity in recent years thanks to the importance attached to quality of life and self-actualization of tourists in the post modern era, which has all been necessitated by the challenges wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to the current research lacuna of competitiveness analyses of specialized small-scale destinations, this study comprehensively proposes and empirically evaluates the competitiveness of slow tourism destinations as indicated by the values perceived by the slow tourists, and explores the mechanism of competitiveness of slow tourism destinations with investigation of the interrelationships between competitiveness and tourist attitude, consumption emotion and behavioral intentions through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The Gaochun District, which was the first accredited Cittàslow in China, was selected as the research site. Findings yielded four major competitiveness dimensions of community ambiance and service, tourist, and comprehensive management, cultural resources and values and natural resources and protection, and confirmed that perceived values are positively related to attitude, consumption emotion, and behavioral intentions. In addition to offering a valid scale measuring the competitiveness of slow tourism destinations, this study suggests the integration of cultural components in better planning and management of slow tourism destinations.

Abstract: Abundant literature infers the negative incidence of financial liberalization in the banking sector. As interest rate marketization is a reality in China, we empirically investigate the determinants of commercial banks’ financial performance using 10 listed Chinese commercial banks for 1999 to 2019. Our findings suggest that net interest margin (NIM), non-performing loans (NPL), and asset size (LnAsset) are the key drivers of profitability in Chinese banks. Interestingly, for the sample of city banks observed, we find that bank performance is strongly driven by sound management of the assets and the retail interest margins. On the opposite, the joint-stock banks’ strong diversification leads to lower reliance on net interest margins. Our results also suggest that joint-stock banks’ asset size puts strong pressure on their overall performance and exert a diminishing return effect as their assets’ critical size generates proportional administrative expenses that hinder profitability.

Abstract: Online learning platforms have become important learning tools, and online learning replaced face-to-face teaching as the primary learning method of students during COVID-19. However, there have been few systematic studies on learning effectiveness and its influential factors. This study was based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore the joint effects of multiple factors on online learning effectiveness for tourism and hospitality students from the dual perspective of the platform and individual. The results revealed five antecedent combinations that led to high-quality online learning, which were categorized into “platform-individual” internal and external promotion paths and “function-interaction” platform environment promotion paths. Moreover, there were substitution effects in the paths to high-quality online learning; specifically, perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU) were substitutable, and perceived playfulness (PP), learning attitude (LA), and self-efficacy (SE) could replace each other. Finally, self-efficacy was not a necessary condition for efficient online learning. Our findings highlight substitution relationships among the influencing factors of online learning effectiveness from a configuration perspective and further reveal the internal micromechanisms of achieving high-quality online learning.

Abstract: Total Quality Management is a concept which any educational institution can attain through a variety of critical success factors. This concept is one of the steps necessary to maximize success in improving quality in higher education institutions. Hence, this qualitative study used a semi-structured interview, endeavors to identify and analyze some of the critical success factors which have significant impact in Moroccan public higher education institutions under the framework of Total Quality Management. As a result of in-depth semi-structured interviews with three experienced university professors in selected public universities in the economical capital city of Morocco, this study is contributing to the literature by empirically determining the critical success factors of the TQM mostly needed in the public higher education institutions. The findings of this study bring an understanding of how certain critical factors are perceived in the Moroccan public higher education context. In addition to expand the body of the current literature, the study findings also provide knowledge that can be used as a basis to address the management needs of quality in higher education institutions. In addition, this study is the first of its kind to be addressed in the Moroccan setting / North African region.

Abstract: According to previous studies, traditional laboratory safety courses are delivered in a classroom setting where the instructor teaches and the students listen and read the course materials passively. The course content is also uninspiring and dull. Additionally, the teaching period is spread out, which adds to the instructor's workload. As a result, students become less motivated to learn. In contrast, artificially intelligent educational robots (AIERs), help students learn while lessening the workload on instructors by enhancing teaching strategies, using robots to substitute for teachers, giving students access to a variety of instructional content, and improving interaction with students through the use of intelligent voice interactions and Q & A systems to promote student engagement in learning. If the robot is used for a long time for learning, it may lead to a decrease in students' interest in learning. Therefore, this study introduces the GAFCC model (the theory-driven gamification goal, access, feedback, challenge, collaboration design model) as an instructional design model to guide the development of a gamified AIER system, aiming to improve students' motivation and learning effectiveness for laboratory safety courses. To test the effectiveness of the system, this study conducted an experimental study at a university in China in the summer of 2022. 53 participants participated in the research, with a random sample taken from each group. Each participant was able to choose the time of their free time to engage in the experiment. There were 18, 19, and 16 participants in experimental group 1, experimental group 2, and the traditional group, respectively. Students in experimental group 1 learned using the gamified AIER system, students in experimental group 2 learned on a general anthropomorphic robot system and the control group received traditional classroom learning. The experimental results showed that compared to the other two groups, the gamified AIER system guided by the GAFCC model significantly improved students' learning achievement and enhanced their learning motivation, flow experience, and problem-solving tendency. In addition, students who adopted this approach exhibited more positive behaviors and reduced cognitive load in the learning process.

Abstract: Student motivation and engagement have been complex issues in basic mathematics education. Based on the theory of Motivation and Engagement Wheel, this study examined the relationships among student motivation, engagement, and mathematics achievement. A sample of 1,538 Chinese primary school students participated in the survey, and motivation and engagement were assessed through their responses to the Motivation and Engagement Scale. The results largely confirmed the hypothesized relationships between motivation, engagement, and mathematics achievement. Some consistent patterns of individual differences related to gender and grade level were also revealed. Cluster analysis revealed that the category of “struggling students” showed high levels of adaptive engagement in learning, but their mathematics scores were still low, which may be correlated to their high level of maladaptive motivation and engagement. These findings provide implications for developing a more comprehensive knowledge of the nature of students’ mathematics learning motivation and improving their engagement in mathematic learning.
