Abstract: Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of chronic diseases and cancers worldwide. In south-western Taiwan, tobacco use has become one of the top risk behaviors. Smoking in young people has been associated with alcohol addiction and drug abuse in later life; and most smokers start young. Initiation of cigarette smoking at an early age leads to more life-years of tobacco use, makes quitting harder, and increases the risk for serious health consequences. How adolescent boys effectively control their tobacco use is still uncertain. The article explores on the experience of 12 adolescent boys in south-western Taiwan controlling tobacco use as a result of participating in a smoking prevention education program. In addition to the use of interviews and focus groups as the traditional method of data gathering, the lead author also included the use of participants’ paintings as representations of the participants’ lived experience of the phenomenon. The findings of the study suggest that adolescent boys with smoking experience in Taiwan had the desire to control their smoking behavior after obtaining information through a local education program. In addition, they chose suitable methods for controlling their smoking based on the information that had been provided.

Abstract: This paper considers an online retailer and his or her manufacturer, both facing financial constraints and wishing to get loans from their e-commerce platform-backed finance company. Based on shared transaction data and monitored sales accounts, a tripartite loan contract is proposed to coordinate three parties’ actions in this supply chain financing problem. We prove that the proposed loan contract aligns the decentralized decision-makings of each party and duplicates the optimal channel performance under a fully integrated decision-making framework. A case study is then conducted to illustrate the performance of the proposed loan contract. The result shows that the proposed loan contract outperforms wholesale-price contracts, where coordination does not take place, and buyback contracts, where coordination happens between the retailer and the manufacturer only. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis reveals that profit allocations among the lender, the retailer, and the manufacturer resulted from the proposed loan contract are more balanced when the cost-to-retail ratio or risk premium is high.

Abstract: The expansion of higher education in Taiwan has significantly increased the number of college students, including substantial growth of those studying at the master’s degree level. While prior research indicates that the quality of institutions affects students’ achievements, there have been no empirical investigations of how college experiences shape students’ educational aspirations for pursuing graduate education. In this study, we applied hierarchical generalized linear model analytics to national student survey data to examine the factors that contribute to students’ aspirations for pursuing graduate and professional education. The results revealed that gender, admission types, minority status, financial support, SES, academic preparation, college choice, education expectations, college experience domain, and social integration were significantly related with institutional quality, which further affected progression to the next level of education. The findings highlighted the importance of collegiate experiences and suggested that institutions should provide supporting services for students in the profession of student affairs.

Abstract: Green practices and integrated resorts are attracting increasing attention from industry practitioners and academics. However, several barriers limit the growth of green practices, especially in the integrated resorts in Macau. The purpose of this study is to identify the major barriers of implementing green practices in integrated resorts in Macau from the managers’ perspective using qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 managers from the integrated resort sector in Macau. Grounded theory was adopted along with NVivo 12.0 to analyze the qualitative data collected from the interviews. Results revealed five major barriers to green practices in the integrated resort sector: policies and regulations, management, resources, costs, and awareness. These findings extend existing theoretical explanations for green practices and provide a guideline of implementing green practices in the integrated resort sector for policymakers and practitioners.
