    Abstract: This study examined the eHealth literacy, health knowledge, health behavior of a population of older Chinese adults, and the impact of using library or community activities for health information seeking. A survey was conducted among 215 participants 45 years or older. Data were analyzed using chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance, bivariate correlation, and multiple regression. The results showed that participants who were urban residents, non-farm workers, and had 9 years of education or more were more likely to use the library or community activities for health information seeking. Health behavior had a significant relationship with eHealth literacy and health knowledge. Both eHealth literacy and health knowledge showed a significant positive relationship with using the library or community activities for health information. These results support the idea that libraries play an important role in providing high-quality eHealth literacy services to enhance healthy behavior and health outcomes in their communities.

    Abstract: On December 2, 2020, a 2-m class robotic drill onboard the Chinese Chang’E 5 lunar lander successfully penetrated 1 m into the lunar regolith and collected 259.72 g of samples. This paper presents the design and development, terrestrial tests, and lunar sampling results of the robotic drill. First, the system design of the robotic drill, including its engineering objectives, drill configuration, drilling and coring methods, and rotational speed determination, was studied. Subsequently, a control strategy was proposed to address the geological uncertainty and complexity of the lunar surface. Terrestrial tests were conducted to assess the sampling performance of the robotic drill under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions. Finally, the results of drilling on the lunar surface were obtained, and the complex geological conditions encountered were analyzed. The success of the Chinese Chang’E 5 lunar sample-return mission demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed robotic drill. This study can serve as an important reference for future extraterrestrial robotic regolith-sampling missions.

    Abstract: Transplantation of pancreatic islets is a potentially attractive treatment for type I diabetes. We generated the transplantable, tissue-like aggregates composed of Sertoli cells and islets in rotating wall vessel bioreactors, SICA (Sertoli-islet cell aggregates), to improve their biological function in vitro and in vivo. The isolated islet equivalent and Sertoli cells were purified from Wistar rats and cocultured for 5 days in bioreactor to generate SICA. The SICA, islets aggregates, and fresh isolated islets were transplanted under the kidney capsule of diabetic Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, respectively. The functions of different grafts were ascertained by blood glucose level measurements and an in vivo glucose tolerance test. In response to elevated glucose, insulin secretion from SICA was 1.4-fold higher ( P 〈 0.05, n = 5) than islet aggregates cultured alone. Of the rats that received SICA, 90% (9/10) remained normoglycemic at 60 days post-transplantation, and the survival significantly increased compared with recipients bearing homotypic islets aggregates or freshly isolated islets. The former responded similarly with healthy rats to the glucose tolerance test. Our results support the usefulness of SICA for the treatment of type 1 diabetes without any immunosuppressive agents.

    Abstract: Peripheral blood eosinophils may increase in food allergy (FA). However, the correlation between activation status of blood eosinophils and features of FA are unknown. We collected 25 cases of FA out-patients with increased number of eosinophils and 20 healthy children. Eosinophil surface markers were analyzed by flow cytometry. We found that CD23, CD44, CD54, and CRTH2 were positive on different eosinophils and that their expressions were increased in FA patients compared to the control individuals. There was a positive correlation with strong protein–protein interactions between the four eosinophil surface markers which were functionally involved in regulation of cell killing, interferon-gamma-mediated signaling pathway, and Epstein–Barr virus infection pathway. Thus, blood eosinophils change their phenotype during FA and induce significant gene regulation changes that may cause FA with eosinophilia. Detection of the expression of CD23, CD44, CD54, and CRTH2 on eosinophils can be used as indicators of FA with eosinophilia.

    Abstract: Introduction. Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chromophobe RCC) is the third major subcategory of renal tumors after clear cell RCC and papillary RCC, accounting for approximately 5% of all RCC subtypes. Other oncocytic neoplasms seen commonly in surgical pathology practice include the eosinophilic variant of chromophobe RCC, renal oncocytoma, and low-grade oncocytic unclassified RCC. Methods. In our recent next-generation sequencing based study, we nominated a lineage-specific novel biomarker LINC01187 (long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1187) which was found to be enriched in chromophobe RCC. Like KIT (cluster of differentiation 117; CD117), a clinically utilized chromophobe RCC related biomarker, LINC01187 is expressed in intercalated cells of the nephron. In this follow-up study, we performed KIT immunohistochemistry and LINC01187 RNA in situ hybridization (RNA-ISH) on a cohort of chromophobe RCC and other renal neoplasms, characterized the expression patterns, and quantified the expression signals of the two biomarkers in both primary and metastatic settings. Results. LINC01187, in comparison to KIT, exhibits stronger and more uniform expression within tumors while maintaining temporal and spatial consistency. LINC01187 also is devoid of intra-tumoral heterogeneous expression pattern, a phenomenon commonly noted with KIT. Conclusions. LINC01187 expression can augment the currently utilized KIT assay and help facilitate easy microscopic analyses in routine surgical pathology practice.

    Abstract: Moxibustion treatment has been found to ameliorate clinical symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Herein we investigated the mechanisms underlying the use of moxibustion in a rat model of IBS. Methods: In our study, an IBS model was established in rats by colorectal distension (CRD) stimulus and mustard oil enema. The rats were randomly divided into a normal group, model group, mild moxibustion group, electroacupuncture group, probiotic group and dicetel group. Abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) scores were determined within 90 min of the last treatment. The expression of GDNF/GFRα3 protein and mRNA in the colon and spinal cord were detected by immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time-PCR, respectively. Results: The IBS model rats had significantly higher AWR scores than the normal group ( P 〈 0.01). After mild moxibustion treatment, the AWR score was significantly reduced (20 mm Hg, P 〈 0.05; 40 mm Hg, 60 mm Hg and 80 mm Hg, P 〈 0.01). The model group showed significantly more colonic glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF/GFRα3 (GDNF family receptor α3) protein and mRNA expression in the colon and spinal cord than the normal group ( P 〈 0.01). Compared with the model group, the expression of GDNF/GFRα3 protein and mRNA in the colon and spinal cord of the rats were significantly decreased in the mild moxibustion group (colon: GDNF and GFRα3 protein, P 〈 0.01; GDNF and GFRα3 mRNA, P 〈 0.01; spinal cord: GDNF and GFRα3 protein, P 〈 0.01; GDNF mRNA, P 〈 0.05, GFRα3 mRNA, P 〈 0.01). Conclusions: Our data suggest that moxibustion therapy may mitigate CRD-induced increases in the expression of GDNF and its receptor GFRα3 in the colon and spinal cord in a rat model of IBS.

    Abstract: To investigate the differences in disrupted rhythms between healthy people and patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and their associations with mood disorders during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: The rhythm scales were composed of subscales 1 and 2 for the assessment of life-work and entertainment rhythms, respectively; Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used to assess mood disorders. Results: A total of 671 patients with FGIDs and 4373 healthy people successfully participated. The scores of subscales 1 and 2 for patients with FGIDs were significantly higher than those for healthy people ( p  〈  .005). The SAS and SDS scores, their prevalence rates were significantly higher than those for the healthy group (all p  〈  .001). Health status, current occupation, life-work rhythm, SDS, and SAS were independent related factors of FGIDs. The score of life-work-entertainment rhythm was significantly positively correlated with SDS and SAS (both p  〈  .001). Conclusion: Disrupted rhythms in patients with FGIDs under the COVID-19 pandemic were more frequently and significantly positively associated with mood disorders.

    Abstract: In the course of human evolution, watching eyes have had an important influence on individual cooperative behavior. However, researchers have not explored how the valence of watching eyes affects cooperative behavior. Therefore, this study includes three studies to investigate the effect of watching eyes with different valences on cooperative behavior. The results showed that positive watching eyes (vs. negative watching eyes) induced positive emotions (PA) in the participants and thus increased their tendency to cooperate (Studies 1–2). The role of the decision maker (making decisions for oneself vs. making decisions on behalf of others) moderates the effect of watching eyes on cooperative behavior through emotion (Study 3). In conclusion, the valence of watching eyes significantly affects cooperation. This study not only further enriches research on environmental stimulation and cooperation but also provides inspiration and a reference for solving problems of cooperation in social dilemmas.

    Abstract: Previous studies have observed that human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-low-positive patients and HER2-zero patients have different prognoses. This study was conducted to investigate whether there are differences in clinicopathological characteristics and the response to neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) defined as systemic treatment prior to surgery between HER2-low-positive patients and HER2-zero patients. We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients with HER2-negative breast cancer who received NST at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from 2014 to 2021. There were 238 patients with HER2-low-positive status and 198 patients with HER2-zero status. The proportion of hormone receptor (HR)-positive patients in the HER2-low-positive group was significantly higher than that in the HER2-zero group (82.8% vs 52.0%, p  〈  0.001). The HER2-low-positive group had more patients with low Ki67 expression (23.9% vs 16.2%, p = 0.045), higher mastectomy rate (94.5% vs 88.9%, p = 0.031), and larger pathological tumor size (21.6 vs 17.8 mm, p = 0.028) than the HER2-zero group. However, no significant differences were found in pathologic complete response (pCR) rates between the two groups. We draw a conclusion that patients with HER2-low status and HER2-zero status were not found to have different pCR rates after NST, irrespective of HR status. However, differences were observed in some clinicopathological characteristics between the two groups.

    Abstract: This article presents a study on topology optimization of planar piezoelectric actuators assembled with repetitive component patterns. Repetitive configuration has the advantage of ease of engineering implementation, especially for relatively slender structures. For realizing this concept in the design of piezoelectric actuators, topology optimization techniques are employed for seeking the optimal layout within the design domain of the structural components. The design objective is to maximize the work delivered by the displacement output port, while constraints are imposed on the actuation energy consumption and the material volume. Both the distributions of the actuation voltage and the topologies of the host layer and the piezoelectric layers are optimized. Power-law penalization functions are used to suppress intermediate values of material densities and actuation voltage. Numerical techniques for a sensitivity analysis of structural response are presented, and the proposed optimization problem is solved with a gradient-based mathematical programming approach. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. Compared with the method directly treating the whole design domain, this approach is shown to have a better convergence behavior and is able to provide final topologies that are better acceptable from engineering point of view.
