Beschreibung: Prior to the 2nd annual AtlantOS meeting in month 14 a project progress report for the external project board – the International Scientific and Technical Advisory Board (ISTAB) - will be prepared to enable them to be as good as possible prepared for the meeting and to ensure consequently that AtlantOS receives as constructive as possible recommendations from the board. This report together with the external summary board meeting report, that will be requested from the ISTAB, will represent D11.5.

Beschreibung: Report harmonization in data and data processing to facilitate the interoperability of the systems AtlantOS WP7 is dedicated to improve harmonization of data management procedures, and thereby improve the quality, interoperability and discoverability of data resources in AtlantOS. To improve harmonization, AtlantOS WP7 works on multiple levels; a) WP7 has identified selected areas, where significant improvements of interoperability can be obtained. This has resulted in the formulation of a common agreement stating a set of specific minimum standards, which shall ensure cross platform coherence. This includes minimum standards for use of identifiers for platforms and institutions, metadata including vocabularies, quality control and dissemination means. Furthermore, guidelines regarding DOI assignment, catalogue techniques and vocabulary use in AtlantOS have been formulated. b) AtlantOS has formulated and installed a Data Management Plan (DMP) setting the framework for handling and dissemination of AtlantOS data. This was the first step towards improved harmonization and includes an overview of the Data Landscape, prioritization of Essential Variables for AtlantOS, regulations regarding open access to data and recommendations on use of standards. c) AtlantOS WP7 is initiating investigations of the use of GEOSS services, both for technical broker solutions to improve harmonization as well as for dissemination of AtlantOS data resources in an interdisciplinary global context. d) AtlantOS is also working on improving the transcontinental data sharing. A workshop is planned for in 2017 specifically targeting improvement of transcontinental sharing of data from the Atlantic Ocean. We here present the preliminary incentives for improving the transatlantic collaboration.

Beschreibung: The purpose of task 1 in WP7 in AtlantOS project is to harmonize data exchange and data processing procedures for the EOVs that are acquired by multiple networks. In this framework, the present report [D7.2] establishes recommendations for automatic quality control procedures in Near RT (a few hours to several days) for the core of 7 EOVs (measured by more than one of Networks involved in AtlantOS): • Physics : temperature (T), Salinity (T), Current for surface and subsurface and Sea level • Biogeochemistry : Oxygen (O2), Chlorophyll-A, Nitrate (NO3) and Carbon (pCO2) for surface and subsurface The recommendations have been compiled by experts on those EOVs and validated by the Networks acquiring those EOVs in NRT (link with WP2, WP3 and WP4). These recommendations will evolve with time under the EuroGOOS DATAMEQ working group umbrella (http://eurogoos.eu/data-management-exchange-quality-working-group-data-meq/) and benefit from scientific progress made by the observing Networks via the Task teams established within EuroGOOS (http://eurogoos.eu/task-teams/) These recommendations do not address the delayed mode quality control proceeses.

Beschreibung: This task will use outputs from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) to develop a system for ship routing hazard mapping. Starting from knowledge of the environmental fields affecting vessel seakeeping, the system will estimate hazard and cost associated to known routes in the Atlantic Ocean. The system will employ model analysis or reanalysis of sea state (wave height, period, and direction), hydrodynamics (near surface ocean currents), and meteorological (wind) models. The system will produce an objective route hazard assessment, based on UNIBO experience in hazard mapping and probabilistic approaches. The investigated routes will be selected based on the most relevant ones, according to the AIS (Automatic Information System) density maps. In particular, the existing CMCC ship routing code (VISIR) will be first of all validated through inter-comparison with analytical benchmarks and other published models. VISIR’s functionalities will then be extended for optimizing the operational costs (bunker) of large ocean-going vessels sailing along routes compliant with IMO safety recommendations. The same approach will be extended to computation of vessel operational costs along the route. This information will build up a database, queried by the end-user through a graphical interface for visualizing customized maps of route hazard and cost for user provided parameters [D8.10]. The fitness of AtlantOS for ship routing will be analyzed with a dedicated report [D8.14].

Beschreibung: Report on potential, selected sites for offshore aquaculture along the Spanish, Norwegian and Irish Atlantic coasts. European policy intends to expand the space available to aquaculture by cultivating sites that are offshore. This presents challenges in terms of building structures e.g. fish cages that withstand the effects of offshore weather conditions along the Atlantic coast. In order to establish possible future sites for offshore aquaculture production we intend to gather relevant wave, current velocity and water column structure measurements from the coasts of Ireland, Norway and Spain and use these data to validate site assessment models at ca. 200 m horizontal resolution of the potential new offshore aquaculture sites. This will result in a generic tool based on in-situ observations and model output over a hindcast period, coupled to existing site decision tools, so that potential license applicants can pinpoint sites for further exploration and site investigation.
