Beschreibung: Although small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) contribute considerably to Germany's carbon emissions, regional savings and cooperative banks - SMEs' most important financiers - hardly consider this aspect in lending to these businesses. However, given Germany's commitment to climate neutrality by 2045, suitable approaches for injecting climate finance into these SME lending processes are greatly required. Against this background, the paper at hand aims to introduce the specific case of regional banks into the debate on green finance and green banking and suggest future research in this context. In discussing the state of research on the peculiarities of regional savings and cooperative banks, we outline the resulting opportunities and limitations for climate impact assessments in SME lending. We argue that while the dual bottom-line orientation of regional banks in Germany precludes them from applying simple positive or negative screenings, their in-depth knowledge about local clients and circumstances enables them to be active and engaging partners for the green transformation of SMEs. Nonetheless, we explain why developing solutions to utilise this knowledge for climate finance by integrating climate impact assessments into routine lending processes remains a particularly challenging task.

Beschreibung: The main focus of the TERENO Northeastern German Lowland Observatory (TERENO-Northeast) is the regional impact of Global Change. Since 2011, the observatory has recorded changes in the geo-, hydro-, bio- and atmosphere at six main study sites. The year 2018, particularly in northeast Germany, was record-breaking in regard to dryness and heat. The mean temperature in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was 2 °C above the long-term average and precipitation was very low at 440 mm (normally around 600 mm). The extreme summer of 2018 was a special opportunity for TERENO-Northeast to measure the regional effects of climate change. One of the consequences was the large number of forest fires, with one major fire destroying around 400 hectares. Other extreme reactions of the ecosystems were shown in TERENO-Northeast. For example, for the first time since its rewetting, Polder Zarnekov fell dry, with unpredictable consequences for the greenhouse gas exchanges. The forest ecosystems of Müritz National Park, on the other hand, survived the extreme summer surprisingly well, partly because the months before the drought were relatively damp. The research activities of TERENO-Northeast form an important basis to develop realistic options for improved adaptation strategies to the ongoing global change with its particular region-specific effects and challenges.

Beschreibung: In our meeting Dynamic Earth – from Alfred Wegener to today and beyond we will review how Wegener‘s findings evolved into to modern Earth system science including its impact on climate and the Earth surface, and how this system affects our daily life: where humans live, what risks we are exposed to, where we find our resources. In the meeting we will hold sessions that cover the entire geoscience spectrum (from mineral physics over solid earth geodynamics to the climate sciences) and that explore the consequences of Wegeners findings on how humans use our planet today (from energy and mineral resources over georisks to utilisation of the subsurface and materials for modern society). We have invited keynote speakers that are eminent international scientists in these fields. In events open to the general public we will get an account of Wegeners final trip to Greenland on the history of science of his hypothesis.

Beschreibung: A clear understanding of socio-technical interdependencies and a structured vision are prerequisites for fostering and steering a transition to a fully renewables-based energy system. To facilitate such understanding, a phase model for the renewable energy transition in MENA countries has been developed and applied to the case of Palestine. It is designed to support the strategy development and governance of the energy transition and to serve as a guide for decision-makers. The transition towards renewable energies is still at a very early stage in Palestine. The long-standing political conflict between Palestine and Israel has prevented the large-scale deployment of renewable energy due to land restrictions. Palestine's political instability, its geographically fragmented territories, and its high dependence on Israel's imports are the most pressing concerns for Palestine’s electricity sector. At the operational level, particularly the transmission and distribution infrastructure need to be better interconnected, renewed and expanded to accommodate larger volumes of renewable electricity and at the same time improve efficiency. The modelled demand development shows that Palestine will most likely have to continue importing electricity even if the potential of renewable energy is fully exploited. This underlines the importance of sustainable energy partnerships for Palestine. The results of the analysis along the transition phase model towards 100% renewable energy are intended to stimulate and support the discussion on Palestine's future energy system by providing an overarching guiding vision for the energy transition and the development of appropriate policies.

Beschreibung: In the context of global change, the Southern African region has to address great challenges in terms of its natural resources, in particular to cope with the impact of climate and land use change on the water balance, the soil fertility and the quantity of land suitable for common requirements. In the BMBF-funded project GeoArchives researchers from the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the Technical University of Munich and Senckenberg am Meer jointly exploit diverse Southern African archives of landscape development and climate change. The examination of these terrestrial and marine archives will provide deep insights into the climatic evolution and environmental conditions in Southern Africa during the Holocene. The highly interdisciplinary approach integrates geomorphology, soil science, sedimentology, inorganic and organic geochemistry, geomicrobiology and remote sensing. By assessing the possible impact of future climate change and land-use change on specific sensitive environments in Southern Africa we will provide future-oriented earth system management strategies with a geoscience rationale.
