Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Liu Conghui, Liu Bo, Zhang Yan, Jiang Fan, Ren Yuwei, Li Shuqu, Wang Hengchao, Fan Wei Horizontal gene transfer (HGT), a mechanism that shares genetic material between the host and donor from separated offspring branches, has been described as a means of producing novel and beneficial phenotypes for the host organisms. In the present study, 12 HGT genes were identified from California two-spot octopus Octopus bimaculoides based on a similarity search, phylogenetic construction, gene composition analysis and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) validation. The data collected from the HGT genes from octopus, indicating the phylogenetic incongruences, CodonW analysis, PCR products, detailed motifs and organisms used in screening. In phylogenetic screening, those genes were nested within bacteria homologs and identified as HGT genes transferred from the bacteria to the octopus. The motifs were similar in proteins of the horizontally acquired Zn-metalloproteinases, but differed to endogenous proteins. CodonW was employed to investigate the codon usage bias between HGT genes and other genes in the octopus genome. In PCR validation, all the HGT genes could be produced as amplified fragments. The results collectively indicated the existence of HGT in molluscs and its potential l contribution to the evolution of octopus with regards to functional innovation and adaptability.

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Vincent Bretagnolle, Elsa Berthet, Nicolas Gross, Bertrand Gauffre, Christine Plumejeaud, Sylvie Houte, Isabelle Badenhausser, Karine Monceau, Fabrice Allier, Pascal Monestiez, Sabrina Gaba Understanding the response of biodiversity to management, land use and climate change is a major challenge in farmland to halt the decline of biodiversity. Farmlands shelter a wide variety of taxa, which vary in their life cycle and habitat niches. Consequently, monitoring biodiversity from sessile annual plants to migratory birds requires dedicated protocols. In this article, we describe the protocols applied in a long-term research platform, the LTSER Zone Atelier “Plaine & Val de Sèvre” (for a full description see Bretagnolle et al. (2018) [1] ). We present the data in the form of the description of monitoring protocols, which has evolved through time for arable weeds, grassland plants, ground beetles, spiders, grasshoppers, wild bees, hoverflies, butterflies, small mammals, and farmland birds (passerines, owls and various flagship species).

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Ayeni Adebanji, Olaleke Oluseye Ogunnaike, O.O. Iyiola, Omotola Adedoyin Ezenwoke, Stephen Ibidunni The article presented data on how institutional framework has provided opportunities for the survival of informal entrepreneurs. In other words, data were gathered based on how the informal entrepreneurs in the electronics market were able to manipulate or avoid law enforcement officials thereby leading to sustainable business performance. Emphasis was laid on four southwestern states in Nigeria to determine the survivals of informal business. Data were gathered based on descriptive survey research design. The population of this study included all informal entrepreneurs in some selected electronics markets. Mean score and standard deviation were used as statistical tools for data presentation. The field data set is made widely accessible to enable critical or a more comprehensive investigation.

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Mirele D. Poleti, Luciana C.A. Regitano, Gustavo H.M.F. Souza, Aline S.M. Cesar, Rosineide C. Simas, Bárbara Silva-Vignato, Gabriella B. Oliveira, Sónia C.S. Andrade, Luiz C. Cameron, Luiz L. Coutinho The proteomic data presented in this article are associated with the research article entitled “ Longissimus dorsi muscle label-free quantitative proteomic reveals biological mechanisms associated with intramuscular fat deposition” published in Journal of Proteomics [1] . In this article, we characterized the proteomic profile of bovine Longissimus dorsi muscle from Nelore steers and identified differentially abundant proteins associated with the intramuscular fat (IMF) content. An integrated transcriptome-assisted label-free quantitative proteomic approach by High Definition Mass Spectrometry (HDMS E ) was employed to identify and quantify the proteins. A functional enrichment analysis using the differentially abundant proteins list was performed to understand the biological processes involved in IMF deposition. Moreover, to explore and clarify the biological mechanisms that influence IMF content, the mRNA data for the same trait from Cesar and collaborators [2] obtained by RNA-sequencing technology was compared with proteomic data. The mRNA data is deposited in the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) repository (EMBL-EBI), under accession PRJEB13188.

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Ming Zhao, Yingqun Nian, Paul Allen, Gerard Downey, Joseph P. Kerry, Colm P. O’Donnell The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled “Application of Raman spectroscopy and chemometric techniques to assess sensory characteristics of young dairy bull beef” [1] . Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were developed on Raman spectral data pre-treated using Savitzky Golay (S.G.) derivation (with 2nd or 5th order polynomial baseline correction) and results of sensory analysis on bull beef samples ( n  = 72). Models developed using selected Raman shift ranges (i.e. 250–3380 cm −1 , 900–1800 cm −1 and 1300–2800 cm −1 ) were explored. The best model performance for each sensory attributes prediction was obtained using models developed on Raman spectral data of 1300–2800 cm −1 .

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Riyadh K. Abid, Ammar S. Abbas The presented data shows how cornstarch can be modified to a material that can effectively remove organics pollutants from a real wastewater. A low-cost adsorbent obtained from cornstarch by the crosslinking with epichlorohydrin. The prepared crossed linked starch (CLS) adsorbent characterized by X-ray diffraction, zeta potential, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area. The effects of initial chemical oxygen demand of the real wastewater, temperature and time of the adsorption of the organics on the prepared CLS were analyzed. The removal of the highest organics concentration was 89.85%. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models have been applied to investigate the adsorption equilibrium. The maximum adsorption capacity of the organics pollutants on the prepared CLS was 256.41 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption process of organics on CLS is more favorable at low temperature.

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): Daniel S. Asfaw, Pete R. Jones, Nicholas D. Smith, David P. Crabb Eye movements of glaucoma patients have been shown to differ from age-similar control groups when performing everyday tasks, such as reading (Burton et al., 2012; Smith et al., 2014) [1,2] , visual search (Smith et al., 2012) [3] , face recognition (Glen et al., 2013) [4] , driving, and viewing static images (Smith et al., 2012) [5] . Described here is the dataset from a recent publication in which we compared the eye-movements of 44 glaucoma patients and 32 age-similar controls, while they watched a series of short video clips taken from television programs (Crabb et al., 2018) [6] . Gaze was recorded at 1000 Hz using a remote eye-tracker. We also provide demographic information and results from a clinical examination of vision for each participant.

Description: Publication date: August 2018 Source: Data in Brief, Volume 19 Author(s): H.O. Falola, O.A. Oludayo, D.M. Akinnusi, A.O. Osibanjo, O.P. Salau The main objective of this paper is to present the data set which depicts faculty commitment and effectiveness of job responsibilities in a changing world and the moderating role of the university׳s support system. The population of the study consisted all the 1912 Faculty members of six selected private universities in Southwest, Nigeria [5] . The sample size determination formula by [5] was adopted, resulting in the selection of 400 respondents to whom a structured questionnaire was administered accordingly. Only 343 copies of the questionnaire were valid and used for this data set. Structural equation modeling, which combines factor analysis and multiple regression, was used to present the structural relationship between dependent and independent variables. When the data is analysed, it will help to determine the degree of relationship and the strength of significance between the observed variables and the latent constructs.
