Beschreibung: A global water resources ensemble of hydrological models: the eartH2Observe Tier-1 dataset Jaap Schellekens, Emanuel Dutra, Alberto Martínez-de la Torre, Gianpaolo Balsamo, Albert van Dijk, Frederiek Sperna Weiland, Marie Minvielle, Jean-Christophe Calvet, Bertrand Decharme, Stephanie Eisner, Gabriel Fink, Martina Flörke, Stefanie Peßenteiner, Rens van Beek, Jan Polcher, Hylke Beck, René Orth, Ben Calton, Sophia Burke, Wouter Dorigo, and Graham P. Weedon Earth Syst. Sci. Data, 9, 389-413, https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-9-389-2017, 2017 The dataset combines the results of 10 global models that describe the global continental water cycle. The data can be used as input for water resources studies, flood frequency studies etc. at different scales from continental to medium-scale catchments. We compared the results with earth observation data and conclude that most uncertainties are found in snow-dominated regions and tropical rainforest and monsoon regions.

Beschreibung: Long-term weather, hydrometric, and water chemistry datasets in high-temporal resolution at the La Salle River watershed in Manitoba, Canada Marcos R. C. Cordeiro, Jason A. Vanrobaeys, and Henry F. Wilson Earth Syst. Sci. Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-57,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 0 comments) The research, conducted in Manitoba, Canada, involved the development of datasets for hydrological modelling applications. The datasets included weather, hydrometric and water chemistry variables required to run models at an hourly time-step and assess their predictive performance for stream flow and water quality. The data and methods developed will be useful for other hydrological assessments and modelling studies in this region and in similar landscapes and climates around the world.

Beschreibung: A multi-decadal wind-wave hindcast for the North Sea 1949–2014: coastDat2 Nikolaus Groll and Ralf Weisse Earth Syst. Sci. Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-36,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 0 comments) A wave hindcast for the North Sea covering the period 1949–2014 using the third-generation spectral wave model WAM was produced. The hindcast is part of the coastDat database representing a consistent and homogenous met-ocean data set. It is shown that despite not being perfect, data from the wave hindcast are generally suitable for wave climate analysis.

Beschreibung: A database of paleoceanographic sediment cores from the North Pacific, 1951–2016 Marisa Borreggine, Sarah E. Myhre, K. Allison S. Mislan, Curtis Deutsch, and Catherine V. Davis Earth Syst. Sci. Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-49,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 1 comment) We created a database of 2134 marine sediment cores above 30° N in the North Pacific from 1951–2016 to facilitate paleoceanographic and paleoclimate research. This database allows for accessibility to sedimentary sequences, age models, and proxies produced in the North Pacific. We found community-wide shifts towards multiproxy investigation and increased age model generation. This database consolidates the research effort of an entire community into an efficient tool for future investigations.

Beschreibung: Over 10 million seawater temperature records for the United Kingdom Continental Shelf between 1880 and 2014 from 17 Cefas (United Kingdom Government) marine data systems David Morris, John Pinnegar, David Maxwell, Stephen Dye, Liam Fernand, Stephen Flatman, Oliver Williams, and Stuart Rogers Earth Syst. Sci. Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-56,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 0 comments) This paper brings together over 10 million previously unpublished, quality-controlled, seawater temperature measurements from 130 years of government-funded marine science investigations in the United Kingdom (UK). The records focus around the UK but also extend from Greenland to the Bay of Biscay. Making the data open and accessible provides valuable information to assess changing hydrological conditions. The data are now all publicly available at https://www.cefas.co.uk/cefas-data-hub/ .

Beschreibung: A 156 kyr smoothed history of the atmospheric greenhouse gases CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O and their radiative forcing Peter Köhler, Christoph Nehrbass-Ahles, Jochen Schmitt, Thomas F. Stocker, and Hubertus Fischer Earth Syst. Sci. Data, 9, 363-387, https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-9-363-2017, 2017 We document our best available data compilation of published ice core records of the greenhouse gases CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O and recent measurements on firn air and atmospheric samples covering the time window from 156 000 years BP to the beginning of the year 2016 CE. A smoothing spline method is applied to translate the discrete and irregularly spaced data points into continuous time series. The radiative forcing for each greenhouse gas is computed using well-established, simple formulations.

Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-48,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 0 comments) We present new cloud property datasets based on measurements from the passive imaging satellite sensors AVHRR, MODIS, ATSR2, AATSR and MERIS. Two retrieval systems were developed that include cloud detection and cloud typing followed by optimal estimation (OE) based retrievals of cloud properties (e.g. effective radius, optical thickness, water path). Special features of all datasets are spectral consistency and rigorous uncertainty propagation from pixel-level data to monthly properties.

Beschreibung: Volcanic stratospheric sulphur injections and aerosol optical depth from 500 BCE to 1900 CE Matthew Toohey and Michael Sigl Earth Syst. Sci. Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-31,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 0 comments) The injection of sulphur into the stratosphere by explosive volcanic eruptions is the cause of significant climate variability. Based on sulphate records from a suite of ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica, the eVolv2k database includes estimates of the magnitudes and approximate source latitudes of major volcanic stratospheric sulphur injection events from 500 BCE to 1900 CE, constituting an update of prior reconstructions and an extension of the record by 1000 years.

Beschreibung: Speleothem stable isotope reference records for East-Central Europe – Resampling sedimentary proxy records to get evenly spaced time-series with spectral control István Gábor Hatvani, Zoltán Kern, Szabolcs Leél-Őssy, and Attila Demény Earth Syst. Sci. Data Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/essd-2017-44,2017 Manuscript under review for ESSD (discussion: open, 0 comments) Evenly spaced carbon- and oxygen stable isotope records were produced from Central European stalagmites. To mitigate the potential bias of interpolation, the variance spectra was carefully evaluated. The derived data are ready to use with conventional uni-, and multivariate statistics, which are usually not prepared to handle the general characteristic of sedimentary paleoclimate records derived from geological sequences unevenly sampled in time.
