    Description: The theory of the interpretation of seismic travel‐time curves for refracted rays in horizontal structures is treated after the manner of Herglotz‐Wiechert, under the customary assumption that the ray paths obey the laws of geometrical optics. Multiple valued travel‐time curves, discontinuous velocity functions, and the discontinuous travel‐time curves associated with a slower speed bed receive special consideration. It appears that interpretations satisfactory from the theoretical point of view may be obtained in these cases, although, experimentally, sufficiently complete data to meet the requirements of theory may often be difficult or impossible to obtain.

    Description: Eutrophication combined with climate change has caused ephemeral filamentous macroalgae to increase and drifts of seaweed cover large areas of some Baltic Sea sites during summer. In ongoing projects, these mass occurrences of drifting filamentous macroalgae are being harvested to mitigate eutrophication, with preliminary results indicating considerable nutrient reduction potential. In the present study, an energy assessment was made of biogas production from the retrieved biomass for a Baltic Sea pilot case. Use of different indicators revealed a positive energy balance. The energy requirements corresponded to about 30%–40% of the energy content in the end products. The net energy gain was 530–800 MJ primary energy per ton wet weight of algae for small-scale and large-scale scenarios, where 6 000 and 13 000 tonnes dwt were harvested, respectively. However, the exergy efficiency differed from the energy efficiency, emphasising the importance of taking energy quality into consideration when evaluating energy systems. An uncertainty analysis indicated parametric uncertainty of about 25%–40%, which we consider to be acceptable given the generally high sensitivity of the indicators to changes in input data, allocation method, and system design. Overall, our evaluation indicated that biogas production may be a viable handling strategy for retrieved biomass, while harvesting other types of macroalgae than red filamentous species considered here may render a better energy balance due to higher methane yields.

    Description: We investigated the effects of D IT at the interface between SiO 2 and Si-, C-, and a-face 4H-SiC in n-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) that were subjected to dry/nitridation and pyrogenic/hydrotreatment processes. D IT at E C − E T  = 0.2 eV was evaluated by the C − ψ S method using MOS capacitors and was accurately reflected in the subthreshold slope of the MOSFETs. The peak field-effect mobility was inversely proportional to D IT . The mobility for the a-face MOSFETs was 1.5 times or more higher than the other faces mobilities, indicating that mobility limiting factors other than D IT (0.2 eV) may exist for the Si- and C-face interfaces.

    Description: Flexoelectric effect is the response of electric polarization to the mechanical strain gradient. At the nano-scale, where large strain gradients are expected, the flexoelectric effect becomes appreciable and may substitute piezoelectric effect in centrosymmetric materials. These features make flexoelectricity of growing interest during the last decade. At the same time, the available theoretical and experimental results are rather contradictory. In particular, experimentally measured flexoelectric coefficients in some ferroelectric materials largely exceed theoretically predicted values. Here, we determine the upper limits for the magnitude of the static bulk contribution to the flexoelectric effect in ferroelectrics, the contribution which was customarily considered as the dominating one. The magnitude of the upper bounds obtained suggests that the anomalously high flexoelectric coupling documented for perovskite ceramics can hardly be attributed to a manifestation of the static bulk effect.

    Description: Polycrystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films are exposed to hydrogen and hydrogen/methane plasmas at different conditions. The latter plays an indispensable role in the subsequent deposition of nanocrystalline diamond thin films on AlN. The changes of AlN properties are investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies as well as atomic force microscopy. The E 1 (TO) and E 2 2 phonon mode frequencies blue-shift after the exposure to plasmas. The damping constant of E 1 (TO) phonon, calculated from FTIR transmission spectra using the factorized model of a damped oscillator, and the width of E 2 2 peak in Raman spectra decrease with increasing substrate temperature till the decomposition of AlN thin film becomes notable. It is proven that these changes are driven by the plasmas as annealing in vacuum does not induce them.

    Description: Effects of oxygen vacancies on the dielectric, electrical, and ferroelectric properties of Ba 4 Nd 2 Fe 2 Nb 8 O 30 ceramics were investigated. A dielectric relaxation above T c can be ascribed to the trap-controlled ac conduction around doubly ionized oxygen vacancies. The dc conductivity of the N 2 -annealed and O 2 -annealed samples is attributed to the long-range motion of the V o ⋅ ⋅ , and that of the as-sintered sample is considered to be governed by the electronic and oxygen-vacancy ionic mixed conduction mechanism. Low concentration and random distributed oxygen vacancies are propitious to the domain switching, while high concentration and allied oxygen defects hinder the domain-wall movement.

    Description: An array of 3 × 3 plasmonic photoconductive terahertz emitters with logarithmic spiral antennas is fabricated on a low temperature (LT) grown GaAs substrate and characterized in response to a 200 fs optical pump from a Ti:sapphire mode-locked laser at 800 nm wavelength. A microlens array is used to split and focus the optical pump beam onto the active area of each plasmonic photoconductive emitter element. Pulsed terahertz radiation with record high power levels up to 1.9 mW in the 0.1–2 THz frequency range is measured at an optical pump power of 320 mW. The record high power pulsed terahertz radiation is enabled by the use of plasmonic contact electrodes, enhancing the photoconductor quantum efficiencies, and by increasing the overall device active area, mitigating the carrier screening effect and thermal breakdown at high optical pump power levels.

    Description: Aluminum wire array z pinches imploded on the Z generator are an extremely bright source of 1–2 keV radiation, with close to 400 kJ radiated at photon energies 〉1 keV and more than 50 kJ radiated in a single line (Al Ly-α). Opacity plays a critical role in the dynamics and K-shell radiation efficiency of these pinches. Where significant structure is present in the stagnated pinch this acts to reduce the effective opacity of the system as demonstrated by direct analysis of spectra. Analysis of time-integrated broadband spectra (0.8–25 keV) indicates electron temperatures ranging from a few 100 eV to a few keV are present, indicative of substantial temperature gradients.

    Description: The transport scaling with respect to plasma size and heating power is studied for ion temperature gradient driven turbulence using a fixed-flux full- f gyrokinetic Eulerian code. It is found that when heating power is scaled with plasma size, the ion heat diffusivity increases with plasma size in a local limit regime, where fixed-gradient δ f simulations predict a gyro-Bohm scaling. In the local limit regime, the transport scaling is strongly affected by the stiffness of ion temperature profiles, which is related to the power degradation of confinement.
