    Analyzing a transition to a sustainability-oriented science system in Germany (2012)

    Description: The multi-level perspective has successfully been applied to the analysis of complex sector transitions in the energy, the health or the food production sector. Is this framework also helpful to understand and give prescriptive advice for sustainability transformations within a national science system? Based on a comprehensive study of the diffusion of transdisciplinary sustainability research in Germany, this article analyzes the institutional dimension of a changing science-society relation in the German science system. It uses the multi-level perspective as a fruitful heuristic in order to identify potential pathways for a broader diffusion of transdisciplinary sustainability science. The importance of niche coalitions of frontrunner universities and research institutes are highlighted.

    Description: In recent years, policies to promote renewable energy have become increasingly popular among municipalities in different parts of the world. This article examines the case of Germany. It argues that municipalities, compared to other state and private actors, already have the potential to play a key role in German renewable energy governance. Although both private actors and the European Union have gained importance in the past 20 years, German municipalities still play a crucial role and can apply five distinct and important modes of governance in the field of renewable energy policy. In this regard, the notion of a general development towards a "cooperating and ensuring state", which increasingly delegates its tasks and thus becomes less important, cannot be confirmed in the field of municipal renewable energy governance in Germany.

    Current approaches to the digital product passport for a circular economy : an overview of projects and initiatives (2022)

    Description: A large number and variety of activities are being undertaken to introduce Digital Product Passports (DPPs). However, only a few DPPs have made it into practice so far, so there is some uncertainty about which impact DPPs will actually have. With this paper, we aim to provide a structured overview of the current development of DPPs. We provide insights of 76 current corporate, policy, and research activities that exist and their objectives. To allow for a structured assessment and discussion of the diverse approaches we defined 13 criteria for a comparable description, categorization and evaluation. We expect that this overview will not only encourage feedback and contributions from the DPP community, as well as valuable discussions with and among experts. It is also intended to help promote and facilitate the adoption of DPPs for the Circular Economy by facilitating collaborations and suggestions for ongoing activities.

    Description: The paper aims to shed light on the methodological challenges of GHG monitoring at local level and to give an overview on current practices. Questions addressed are as follows: How do the methodologies which underlie different GHG inventory tools differ? What are the critical variables explaining differences between inventories? Can different GHG inventory tools be compatible - and/or interoperable - and under which conditions? The first section discusses methodological challenges related to the formation of local GHG inventories. Rather than giving a comprehensive overview on methodological problems, this section mainly highlights some of the central methodological challenges posed by local GHG inventories. This overview identifies critical variables and clarifies concepts that are necessary for the understanding of the subsequent analysis. In section two, some of the most advanced GHG inventory tools are analysed and the most important differences between these tools are highlighted. The paper concludes that the methodologies are not consistent. Local GHG inventories can thus hardly be compared. The paper gives research and policy recommendations towards greater comparability and sketches the requirements of an international protocol on urban GHG inventories.

    Towards sustainable development : alternatives to GDP for measuring progress (2010)

    Description: Economic performance of a country is generally being measured through GDP (Gross Domestic Product), a variable that has also become the de facto universal metric for "standards of living". However, GDP does not properly account for social and environmental costs and benefits. It is also difficult to achieve sustainable decision-making aiming at sustainable progress and well-being if welfare is being considered from a purely financial point of view. The study highlights the benefits and some of the shortcomings of GDP. It serves as a helpful and practicable instrument for monetary and fiscal policies. The real problem presumably is that GDP growth is too often confused with (sustainable) welfare growth in people's minds. While there certainly is a correlation between the two, this study shows that this is a highly conditional correlation, void of substantial causality for GDP levels observable in the European Union. In order to be able to assess people's well-being and general sustainable development in the sense of sustainability, an alternative instrument going beyond GDP is necessary. Using so called SWOT analyses, several alternative progress indicators have been assessed in the context of this study. On the one hand it was analysed how far ecological and social factors can be integrated in the GDP measurements. Thereby difficulties arose then trying to monetise these factors. As a further possibility indicators were analysed which are to replace GDP as a whole. The category supplementing GDP seems to be the most realistic and acceptable option for going beyond GDP. Within this approach, GDP is being complemented with additional environmental and/or social information. In order to make this kind of solution feasible the study claims the establishment of an overarching and transparent indicator system for improving economic decision-making in support of sustainable development.

    Description: Die ökologische Krise wird primär durch den zu hohen und weltweit steigenden Energie- und Ressourcenverbrauch verursacht. Das vorliegende Buch untersucht dessen Ursachen und Dynamik und forscht nach Möglichkeiten einer Eindämmung. Dabei zeigt sich, dass der Rückgriff auf Natur- und Ingenieurswissenschaften zur Bewältigung der ökologischen Krise nicht ausreicht. Um verstehen zu können, was menschliche Eingriffe in die Natur antreibt, ist auch die Kenntnis von sozial- und verhaltenswissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen notwendig. In diesem Rahmen ist die Suffizienzstrategie, die auf Veränderung der Konsumstile zielt, von großer Bedeutung. Sie kann helfen, die negativen Einwirkungen auf die Umwelt in der erforderlichen Weise zu minimieren. Zugleich gilt sie jedoch vielen als unrealisierbar. Die dafür verantwortlichen Barrieren werden im Buch identifiziert und Strategien zu ihrer Überwindung gesucht.

    Description: Im Auftrag des BMZ werden innovative Technologieentwicklungen in Deutschland und Europa eruiert und bewertet. Ziel ist es, Entwicklungen frühzeitig zu erkennen, die für Entwicklungsländer und die internationale Zusammenarbeit wichtig sein können. Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt liegt hierbei in den Bereichen Trinkwasser- und Energiebereitstellung. Die Untersuchung gliedert sich in drei Elemente. Zunächst besteht die Aufgabe darin, eine Screening-Methodik inklusive Kriterien/Indikatoren auszuarbeiten, anhand derer potenziell interessante Ansätze ermittelt werden können. Im zweiten Schritt wird mit Hilfe dieser Methodik eine Vorauswahl für viel versprechende Projekte vorgenommen. In dieser Auswahl ist bereits eine erste Einschätzung hinsichtlich der möglichen Umsetzbarkeit der Ansätze im Sinne von nachhaltiger Entwicklung, also unter Beachtung ökologischer, ökonomischer und sozialer Kriterien, enthalten. Im dritten Schritt wird eine zusammenfassende Bewertung der einzelnen Technologien vorgenommen. Da es sich hier um die Betrachtung neuer, innovativer Technologien handelt, für die der Informationsstand häufig vergleichsweise gering ist, muss die vorgenommene Bewertung vor diesem Hintergrund gesehen werden und kann allenfalls als eine Art grundsätzliche Einschätzung verstanden werden. Nach Rückkopplung mit dem Auftraggeber wird das Thema "Algen" näher hinterfragt und in die Arbeit integriert.
