Description / Table of Contents: In this paper, we realize a study of various constraint qualification conditions for the existence of Lagrange multipliers for convex minimization problems in general normed vector spaces, it is based on a new formula for the normal cone to the constraint set, on local metric regularity and a metric regularity property on bounded subsets. As a by-product, we obtain a characterization of the metric regularity of a finite family of closed convex sets.

Description / Table of Contents: We discuss some aspects of the excitability in a semiconductor laser with short external cavity. It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally how a two-section semiconductor laser consisting of a DFB section and an integrated passive phase tuning section performs an excitable response to optical injection. A mode analysis of the model equations allows to understand and explain the origin of the excitability.

Description / Table of Contents: The field distribution at the ports of the transmission line structure is computed by applying Maxwell's equations to the structure and solving an eigenvalue problem. The high dimensional sparse system matrix is complex in the presence of losses and Perfectly Matched Layer. A method is presented which preserves sparseness and delivers only the small number of interesting modes out with the smallest attenuation. The modes are found solving a sequence of eigenvalue problems of modified matrices with the aid of the invert mode of the Arnoldi iteration using shifts. A new strategy is described which allows the application of the method, first developed for microwave structures, to optoelectronic devices.

Description / Table of Contents: The evolution of heat in crystalline solids is described at low temperatures by the Boltzmann-Peierls-Equation which is a kinetic equation for the phase density of phonons. In this study we solve initial value problems for the Boltzmann-Peierls-Equation with respect to the following questionings: In thermodynamics, a given kinetic equation is usually replaced by its truncated moment systems which in turn is supplemented by a closure principle so that there results a system of PDE's for some moments as thermodynamic variables. A very popular closure principle is the Maximum Entropy Principle yielding a symmetric hyperbolic system. In recent times this strategy has lead to serious studies on two problems that might arise. 1. Do solutions of the Maximum Entropy Principle exist? 2. Is the physics which is embodied in the kinetic equation more or less equivalently displayed by the truncated moment system? It was Junk who proved for the Boltzmann equation of gases that Maximum Entropy solutions do not exist. The same failure appears for the Fokker-Planck-Equation, which was proved by means of explicit solutions by Dreyer/Junk/Kunik. The current study yields a positive existence result ...

Description / Table of Contents: Nonlinear dynamical effects of a multi-section DFB semiconductor laser such as self-pulsations or hysteresis can be described by the traveling wave model. The present paper demonstrates that such a model can be effectively approximated by a low dimensional system of ordinary differential equations where only few dynamically varying longitudinal modes of optical field are taken into account. A bifurcation analysis of the reduced models allow us to identify the mechanisms of switching on and switching off of the self-pulsations by tuning model parameters. An explanation of hysteresis is given as well.

Description / Table of Contents: Self-pulsations in Phase Controlled Mode Beating lasers (PhaseCOMB) are very attractive for all-optical clock recovery at ultra-high bit rates. In this paper we apply the comprehensive simulation tool LDSL that has been developed by us for studying the self-pulsation features of PhaseCOMB lasers considering the effects of spontaneous emission noise, longitudinal spatial hole burning, and gain dispersion. In particular the importance of mode control for adjusting the PhaseCOMB operating conditions is pointed out. The simulation results are confirmed by measurements on fabricated devices.

Description / Table of Contents: The paper addresses the problem of complex regional economic growth by using nonlinear Keynesian model with focusing on direct foreign investments effects. We investigate the dynamics of the model for the broad range of parameters which, in particular, contains the parameter values obtained recently by econometric analysis of the data for economic growth in China. For the single-region model we give conditions for which the dynamics of the model will be chaotic or regular. The parameters which prevent the economic stagnation are indicated. Further, we consider the model for two regions with a common trade as a coupling factor. The conditions are given for the two trading systems to exhibit chaotic synchronization, in-phase and out-of-phase behavior.

Description / Table of Contents: We study the synchronization properties of an array of non identical globally coupled limit cycle oscillators. Above a critical coupling strength, some oscillators undergo a selfpulsing instability. We study analytically the synchronization conditions below and above this instability threshold, thus removing the usual restriction of limit cycle stability. Selfpulsing decreases the order parameter and synchronization degradation can be reduced by delaying the coupling among the oscillators. Semiconductor lasers coupled by an external mirror are used as a convenient realization of that model.
