    Description / Table of Contents: These are a collection of 129 peer reviewed papers from the Malaysia-Japan International Conference on Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Nanoengineering 2014 ( NANO-SciTech 2014 and IC-NET 2014). The papers presented and reviewed in the conference are of up-to-date fundamental research, innovative top-down and bottom-up methods and technologies towards the development of nanomaterials and nanodevices. The effort to share and churned new knowledge in this field are geared towards enhancement and efficient energy conversion, conservation of natural resources, reduction of pollution and overall improvement in quality of life. Novice and veteran researchers in the science, technology, and engineering of materials at the nanometer scale report their findings in 129 papers. Their topics include the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Momordica charantia (bitter melon) fruit extracts, an in-house approach for fabricating poly-silicon nanobiosensors using a conventional photolithography and etching method, photovoltaic properties of dye-sensitized solar cells using novel aligned zinc oxide nanorod arrays on a catalyst doped with tin and seeded with zinc oxide with different aspect ratios, optimizing linear oxide width using local anodic oxidation lithography for fabricating semiconductor and metal nanowires, and a fundamental study of electron-beam lithography beyond the sub 100 nanometer process and its application. - Nanomaterials- Nanoscience- Nanotechnology.

    Description: In spite of current multiple political crises, global warming will remain a prime issue on the global agenda. The adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015 and its quick ratification in 2016 have created a strong momentum for worldwide action against climate change. As global greenhouse gas emissions must decline towards levels close to zero by the middle of the century, the rapid decarbonisation of energy systems is high on the agenda of most countries around the globe. This publication delivers insights into cutting edge research on the necessary transitions towards low carbon societies and by this aims to contribute to international as well as national policymaking. The topics covered in more than 20 concise original articles are among the most important issues for progressing solutions for climate change and sustainable development. The papers discuss recent findings and case studies in the following subject areas: Governance of the necessary long-term transitions in the context of potential known and unknown adverse developments ; Policy instruments and strategies that allow for financing the transition to low carbon economies and, at the same time, respond to today's economic and social challenges ; Integrated strategies for three of the most important arenas of global decarbonisation: Cities, as much of the change and necessary investment for low carbon societies must take place, be planned, be financed and be built in cities; industry, particularly the energy-intensive processing industries, which are at the core of society's metabolism and are responsible for a large and growing share of global emissions and science as a whole, which must become more solutions-oriented because the transitions needed will rely heavily on research providing solutions for technological as well as societal problems. As a contribution to these great challenges and at the request of the G7 Environment Ministers, the Low Carbon Society Research Network (LCS-RNet) acts as a forum aimed at fostering research and policymaking to jointly achieve decarbonised energy systems in countries around the world. It convenes leading scientists, practitioners and policymakers and aims at supporting governments in proceeding jointly towards the design and implementation of climate-friendly low carbon societies.
    Description: Trotz vieler aktueller politischer Krisen wird der Klimawandel ein Hauptthema auf der internationalen Agenda bleiben. Die Verabschiedung des Übereinkommens von Paris in 2015 und seine schnelle Ratifizierung in 2016 zeugen von einer starken Dynamik im weltweiten Vorgehen gegen die Erderwärmung. Da die globalen Treibhausgasemissionen bis zur Mitte des Jahrhunderts gegen Null gesenkt werden müssen, steht die schnelle Dekarbonisierung in vielen Ländern ganz oben auf der Tagesordnung. Diese Publikation gewährt Einblicke in die aktuelle Forschung im Bereich der Entwicklung hin zu kohlenstoffarmen Gesellschaften und soll damit zur Politikgestaltung auf internationaler sowie nationaler Ebene beitragen. Die in mehr als 20 präzisen Originalartikeln diskutierten Themen gehören zu den wichtigsten Fragestellungen, die zur erfolgreichen Bekämpfung des Klimawandels und zum Erreichen nachhaltiger Entwicklung beantwortet werden müssen. In den Beiträgen werden neue Erkenntnisse und Fallstudien aus folgenden Themenbereichen diskutiert: Steuerung langfristig notwendiger Veränderungsprozesse im Kontext bekannter sowie unerwarteter gegensätzlicher Entwicklungen ; politische Maßnahmen und Strategien zur Finanzierung der Übergänge hin zu kohlenstoffarmen Gesellschaften, welche gleichzeitig aktuelle wirtschaftliche und soziale Herausforderungen adressieren sowie ; integrierte Strategien für drei Bereiche, die für das Erreichen einer globalen Dekarbonisierung wesentlich sind: Städte, da der Wandel hin zu kohlenstoffarmen Gesellschaften sowie die dafür benötigten Investitionen zu einem großen Teil hier stattfinden sowie geplant, finanziert und umgesetzt werden müssen; Industrie, vor allem die energieintensive verarbeitende Industrie, die im Mittelpunkt des gesellschaftlichen Stoffwechsels steht und für einen großen, wachsenden Anteil der globalen Emissionen verantwortlich ist und Wissenschaft, die lösungsorientierter arbeiten sollte, da die benötigten Veränderungsprozesse stark auf wissenschaftliche Ansätze zur Lösung technologischer sowie gesellschaftlicher Probleme angewiesen sind. Als Beitrag zur Bewältigung dieser Herausforderungen und auf Wunsch der G7-Umweltminister dient das Low Carbon Society Research Network (LCS-RNet) als Forum zur Förderung von Forschung und Politikgestaltung mit dem Ziel kohlenstoffarmer Gesellschaften. Es bringt führende Wissenschaftler(innen), Fachkräfte und politische Entscheidungsträger(innen) zusammen und soll Regierungen bei der gemeinsamen Gestaltung und Umsetzung klimafreundlicher, kohlenstoffarmer Gesellschaften unterstützen.

    Description: Ocean acidification is an undisputed fact. The ocean presently takes up one-fourth of the carbon CO2 emitted to the atmosphere from human activities. As this CO2 dissolves in the surface ocean, it reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid, increasing ocean acidity and shifting the partitioning of inorganic carbon species towards increased CO2 and dissolved inorganic carbon, and decreased concentration of carbonate ion. While our understanding of the possible consequences of ocean acidification is still rudimentary, both the scientific community and the society at large are increasingly concerned about the possible risks associated with ocean acidification for marine organisms and ecosystems. As this new and pressing field of marine research gains momentum, many in our community, including representatives of coordinated research projects, international scientific organisations, funding agencies, and scientists in this field felt the need to provide guidelines and standards for ocean acidification research. To initiate this process, the European Project on Ocean Acidification (EPOCA) and the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) jointly invited over 40 leading scientists active in ocean acidification research to a meeting at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Science (IFM-GEOMAR) in Kiel, Germany on 19-21 November 2008. At the meeting, which was sponsored by EPOCA, IOC, the Scientific Council on Oceanic Research (SCOR), the U.S. Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry Project (OCB) and the Kiel Excellence Cluster “The Future Ocean”, the basic structure and contents of the guide was agreed upon and an outline was drafted. In the following months, the workshop participants and additional invited experts prepared draft manuscripts for each of the sections, which were subsequently reviewed by independent experts and revised according to their recommendations. Starting 15 May 2009, the guide was made publicly available for an open community review.

    Description: In spite of current multiple political crises, global warming will remain a prime issue on the global agenda. The adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015 and its quick ratification in 2016 have created a strong momentum for worldwide action against climate change. As global greenhouse gas emissions must decline towards levels close to zero by the middle of the century, the rapid decarbonisation of energy systems is high on the agenda of most countries around the globe. This publication delivers insights into cutting edge research on the necessary transitions towards low carbon societies and by this aims to contribute to international as well as national policymaking. The topics covered in more than 20 concise original articles are among the most important issues for progressing solutions for climate change and sustainable development. The papers discuss recent findings and case studies in the following subject areas: Governance of the necessary long-term transitions in the context of potential known and unknown adverse developments; Policy instruments and strategies that allow for financing the transition to low carbon economies and, at the same time, respond to today's economic and social challenges; Integrated strategies for three of the most important arenas of global decarbonisation: Cities, as much of the change and necessary investment for low carbon societies must take place, be planned, be financed and be built in cities; industry, particularly the energy-intensive processing industries, which are at the core of society's metabolism and are responsible for a large and growing share of global emissions and science as a whole, which must become more solutions-oriented because the transitions needed will rely heavily on research providing solutions for technological as well as societal problems. As a contribution to these great challenges and at the request of the G7 Environment Ministers, the Low Carbon Society Research Network (LCS-RNet) acts as a forum aimed at fostering research and policymaking to jointly achieve decarbonised energy systems in countries around the world. It convenes leading scientists, practitioners and policymakers and aims at supporting governments in proceeding jointly towards the design and implementation of climate-friendly low carbon societies.

    Description: This book describes how manmade litter, primarily plastic, has spread into the remotest parts of the oceans and covers all aspects of this pollution problem from the impacts on wildlife and human health to socio-economic and political issues. Marine litter is a prime threat to marine wildlife, habitats and food webs worldwide. The book illustrates how advanced technologies from deep-sea research, microbiology and mathematic modelling as well as classic beach litter counts by volunteers contributed to the broad awareness of marine litter as a problem of global significance. The authors summarise more than five decades of marine litter research, which receives growing attention after the recent discovery of great oceanic garbage patches and the ubiquity of microscopic plastic particles in marine organisms and habitats. In 16 chapters, authors from all over the world have created a universal view on the diverse field of marine litter pollution, the biological impacts, dedicated research activities, and the various national and international legislative efforts to combat this environmental problem. They recommend future research directions necessary for a comprehensive understanding of this environmental issue and the development of efficient management strategies.
