Description / Table of Contents: Semiclassical Theory of Atoms presents a novel approach to theoretical atomic physics. The fundamental quantity in this new, powerful formalism is the effective potential, not the density. The starting point is the highly semiclassical approximation known as the Thomas-Fermi model. It is studied in great detail, and then refined in three steps by adding quantum corrections successively according to their importance. First, the strongly bound electrons are treated in detail. Second, the bulk of electrons is better described by introducing quantum corrections to the Thomas-Fermi treatment and by including the exchange interaction. At this stage, predicted binding energies, for instance, are correct to within a small fraction of a percent. Third, shell effects are introduced. The improved semiclassical treatment is then sufficiently refined to reproduce the systematics of the Periodic Table. It addresses the graduate student with a good knowledge of elementary quantum mechanics

Description / Table of Contents: The physics of phonons is a rapidly growing branch of solid state physics. In the present volume A.A. Maradudin presents a thorough review of its current development. This is followed by papers from international specialists studying a variety of theoretical and experimental problems: The foundations of the dynamics of condensed media, including surface vibrations and localization of phonons: phonon kinetics and phonon spectroscopy; and finally the interaction of phonons and electrons. The lectures address graduate students as well as specialists because the main purpose of this publication is to give an overview of the present development of phonon physics

Description / Table of Contents: It was the aim of the 10th workshop in Gwatt (Switzerland), October 1986 to elucidate the twofold impact of physics on the life sciences. On the one hand, the powerful techniques developed for studying complex physical phenomena are very useful in the biological context. Equally useful, on the other hand, are certain physical concepts, such as symmetry and symmetry breaking, linear and nonlinear stability, frustration and constrained dynamics. In this respect the book presents exemplary contributions on topics such as - studies of the symmetries and structure of biological systems using NMR, electron microscopy and image processing; - thermodynamics and transport properties of biomembranes; - physics of proteins and applications in biotechnology; - neural networks and brain research; - the theory of evolution. Researchers in physics, particularly in statistical and biophysics, biology, physiology and medicine will find this book an excellent survey of the most lively fields of physics in living matter

Description / Table of Contents: Dirac's formalism of quantum mechanics was always praised for its elegance. This book introduces the student to its mathematical foundations and demonstrates its ease of applicability to problems in quantum physics. The book starts by describing in detail the concept of Gel'fand triplets and how one can make use of them to make the Dirac heuristic approach rigorous. The results are then deepened by giving the analytic tools, such as the Hardy class function and Hilbert and Mellin transforms, needed in applications to physical problems. Next, the RHS model for decaying states based on the concept of Gamow vectors is presented. Applications are given to physical theories of such phenomena as decaying states and resonances
