Description / Table of Contents: This is a comprehensive account of the asymptotic theory of slender vortices with diffusion cores. Addressed to both graduate students and researchers it describes the mathematical model and its numerical analysis. The asymptotic analysis involves two length and two time scales. Consistency conditions and time invariance of moments of vorticity are given and applied to numerical solutions. The authors also describe consistency conditions between the large circumferential and axial velocity in the core

Description / Table of Contents: This collection of 7 lectures is intended to be a textbook for graduate students who want to learn about modern developments in astronomy and astrophysics. The first part surveys various aspects of the late stages of stellar evolution, including observation and theory. B.C. de Loore's long article on stellar structure is followed by reviews on supernovae, on circumstellar envelopes, and on the evolution of binaries. The second part deals with the important problem of modeling stellar evolution based on the computational hydrodynamics

Description / Table of Contents: Advanced experimental techniques make quantum optics one of the most active fields in probing the fundamental laws of quantum theory. The contributions collected in this volume, by both theoreticians and experimentalists, give an overview of the most recent developments in fundamental quantum optics. Of particular interest is the physics of cooled and trapped particles. Other topics include atomic interferometry, quantum electrodynamics in a cavity, quantum measurement and much more. The level of presentation makes this book intelligible not only to the expert but also to a wide readership from engineering and physics

Description / Table of Contents: The existence of jets emanating from the central sources of radio galaxies and quasars was perhaps the most important discovery for our understanding of the nature of active galactic nuclei. These proceedings present reviews and research papers on extragalactic radio sources. The book begins witha discussion of the phenomenology and models of radio sources. The main partis devoted to detailed studies of jets by VLBI, to the information obtained about the structure of the central source as deduced from variability studies, to production, confinement and velocity of jets as well as to numerical simulations of the jet phenomenon. Reviews of the two best studied jets - those in the radio galaxy M87 and the quasar 3C273 - illustrate our current observational picture of extragalactic radio jets in all accessible wavelength ranges. A section on the influence of the environment on radio galaxies concludes the book. This topical volume addresses researchers and graduate students in astrophysics

Description / Table of Contents: The book concerns limit theorems and laws of large numbers for scaled unionsof independent identically distributed random sets. These results generalizewell-known facts from the theory of extreme values. Limiting distributions (called union-stable) are characterized and found explicitly for many examples of random closed sets. The speed of convergence in the limit theorems for unions is estimated by means of the probability metrics method. It includes the evaluation of distances between distributions of random sets constructed similarly to the well-known distances between distributions of random variables. The techniques include regularly varying functions, topological properties of the space of closed sets, Choquet capacities, convex analysis and multivalued functions. Moreover, the concept of regular variation is elaborated for multivalued (set-valued) functions. Applications of the limit theorems to simulation of random sets, statistical tests, polygonal approximations of compacts, limit theorems for pointwise maxima of random functions are considered. Several open problems are mentioned. Addressed primarily to researchers in the theory of random sets, stochastic geometry and extreme value theory, the book will also be of interest to applied mathematicians working on applications of extremal processes and their spatial counterparts. The book is self-contained, and no familiarity with the theory of random sets is assumed

Description / Table of Contents: The monograph is a study of the local bifurcations of multiparameter symplectic maps of arbitrary dimension in the neighborhood of a fixed point. The problem is reduced to a study of critical points of an equivariant gradient bifurcation problem, using the correspondence between orbits ofa symplectic map and critical points of an action functional. New results onsingularity theory for equivariant gradient bifurcation problems are obtained and then used to classify singularities of bifurcating period-q points. Of particular interest is that a general framework for analyzing group-theoretic aspects and singularities of symplectic maps (particularly period-q points) is presented. Topics include: bifurcations when the symplectic map has spatial symmetry and a theory for the collision of multipliers near rational points with and without spatial symmetry. The monograph also includes 11 self-contained appendices each with a basic result on symplectic maps. The monograph will appeal to researchers and graduate students in the areas of symplectic maps, Hamiltonian systems, singularity theory and equivariant bifurcation theory

Description / Table of Contents: The search for a quantum gravity theory, a theory expected to combine the principles of general relativity and quantum theory, has led to some of the most deepest and most difficult conceptual and mathematical questions of modern physics. The present book, addressing these issues in the framework of recent versions of canonical quantization, is the first to present coherently the background for their understanding. Starting with an analysis of the structure of constrained systems and the problems of their quantization, it discusses the canonical formulation of classical relativity from different perspectives and leads to recent applications of canonical methods to create a quantum theory of gravity. The book aims to make accessible the most fundamental problems and to stimulate work in this field

Description / Table of Contents: Difference spaces arise by taking sums of finite or fractional differences. Linear forms which vanish identically on such a space are invariant in a corresponding sense. The difference spaces of L2 (Rn) are Hilbert spaces whose functions are characterized by the behaviour of their Fourier transforms near, e.g., the origin. One aim is to establish connections between these spaces and differential operators, singular integral operators and wavelets. Another aim is to discuss aspects of these ideas which emphasise invariant linear forms on locally compact groups. The work primarily presents new results, but does so from a clear, accessible and unified viewpoint, which emphasises connections with related work

Description / Table of Contents: Indispensable for the building of cosmological models are precise observational data. To provide such data is the main purpose of this book. First, an analysis of recent cosmological observations using artificial satellites and large ground-based telescopes is given. Among these are the observation of the spatial distribution of galaxies and clusters, the detection of peculiar velocity fields in large regions, and the measurement of anisotropies in the microwave background radiation. Second, the authors present theoretical models which best fit the given observational data. The book addresses graduate students and astronomers and astrophysicists
