Description / Table of Contents: Over the past decade, the understanding of the processes involved in the regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and its dysfunction has greatly increased. As new regulatory peptides have been identified, the underlying causes of central hypogonadism have multiplied, and the area has become increasingly complex. The reversibility of even genetically determined hypogonadotropic hypogonadism has become more firmly established, and clinical studies have greatly expanded our understanding of basic physiological pathways. Structuring this mass of new knowledge in thirteen comprehensive chapters, a group of renowned experts, representing the principal international research groups, take stock of the most recent progress. This up-to-date overview helps scientists and clinicians to plan future research and treat patients with delayed puberty, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and other forms of central reproductive disorders

Description / Table of Contents: The body of knowledge in most medical specialties is rapidly expanding, making it virtually impossible to follow all advances in clinical and basic sciences that are relevant to a given field. This is particularly true in pediatric endocrinology, at the cross-road of pediatrics, endocrinology, development and genetics. Providing abstracts of articles that report the year’s breakthrough developments in the basic sciences and evidence-based new knowledge in clinical research and clinical practice that are relevant to the field, the Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2010 keeps busy clinicians and scientists, pediatric endocrinologists, and also pediatricians and endocrinologists informed on new advances. Twelve Associate Editors and their co-authors selected from several thousand papers those that brought the most meaningful new information, summarized them and provided comments to put them into perspective. The papers are classified into those that identify new genes involved in diseases, new hormones, concepts revised or re-centered, important observations for clinical practice, large-scale clinical trials, new mechanisms, new paradigms, important review articles, new fears and new hopes. Because the Yearbook is endorsed by the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), its publication is linked to the annual meeting of the ESPE. The Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2010 covers the medical and scientific literature from June 2009 through May 2010.

Description / Table of Contents: Human health depends to a great extent on our nutritionally balanced food supply consistent with the evolutionary aspects of diet to which genes were originally programmed to respond. The publication at hand contains selected papers from the Inaugural Conference 〈i〉Healthy Agriculture, Healthy Nutrition, Healthy People〈/i〉 of the World Council on Genetics, Nutrition and Fitness for Health held at Ancient Olympia, Greece, in October 2010. Topics include the relationship between architecture and agriculture, food production systems and urban agriculture, as well as physical activity, nutrition, genetic variation and other determinants of human health. The papers clearly show that optimal nutrition is consistent with ecologically and economically sustainable agriculture, and that there is a need for scientific and political institutions that can integrate research into urban planning and its regulation, agriculture and health care systems. This will contribute to normal development and health throughout the human life cycle, and prevent or delay chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.Scientists working in the fields of medicine, physiology, genetics, nutrition, dietetics, economics, architecture, agriculture as well as scientists and policy makers interested in environmental issues such as agricultural sustainability and climate will find this volume of great interest

Description / Table of Contents: Cleft lip and palate is a complex, multifactorial and relatively common craniofacial disorder, which arises because of disrupted facial development in the embryo. The manifestations of this condition can be life-long and associated with significant morbidity. In the last decade, progress has been made in our understanding of how clefts of the lip and palate arise in human populations, and laboratory studies are beginning to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control development of the lip and palate. In addition, advances in surgical and medical care, and long-term rehabilitation are improving outcome and quality of life for affected individuals. Written by international experts in their respective fields, this publication covers in detail the epidemiology and genetic basis of cleft lip and palate, the developmental biology of lip and palate formation and provides current concepts in the management of patients affected by this condition. Thus, the book provides a contemporary overview of the epidemiology, aetiology and treatment of cleft lip and palate, and will be of use to a wide range of individuals, including students, biologists and clinicians, who have an interest in this subject
