    Description: A colony of Humboldt penguins Spheniscus humboldti in central Chile was monitored from August 1995 to July 2000 to determine patterns of breeding and colony attendance and how these were affected by climatic (rainfall) and oceanographic (El Niño) factors. Nests were periodically checked for contents and roosting birds were counted from vantage points. Two main breeding events were observed: between August and January (spring event) and between April and June (autumn event). Whereas the spring event regularly produced offspring, the autumn event was systematically affected by rains, causing considerable nest desertion. Adults were present in the colony from August to May, abandoning the colony during winter after the nests were flooded. Juveniles occurred only between November and March. Adults moulted mainly in February, while juveniles moulted in January. During the 1997/98 El Niño episode, the number of breeding pairs was 55 to 85% lower than the mean, the onset of nesting was delayed, and abnormally heavy rainfall flooded nests. While the number of breeding pairs was significantly related to sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA), breeding success was not. The attendance of adults and juveniles at the colony during El Niño was 25 and 73% lower, respectively, than the mean attendance. This 2-peak breeding strategy of Humboldt penguins appears to have evolved in response to the more favourable oceanographic and climatic conditions of Perú, where breeding is continuous and not interrupted by rains. Although less productive, the species probably maintains its autumnal breeding in central Chile because this provides additional offspring to supplement those regularly produced during the spring event.

    Description: Coral reefs are suffering severe declines world-wide caused by multiple anthropogenic disturbances combined with natural events such as storms. Their future depends on the resilience of replenishment processes. However, few studies exist on the effects of multiple stresses on early life history of corals. This review describes coral early life history processes including reproduction, settlement and post-settlement survival. Relevant literature is then reviewed, focusing on the effects of four major human-induced threats, sedimentation, eutrophication, fishing and rising sea water temperature on reproduction, settlement and post-settlement survival. Research shows that in many cases different stresses affect the same replenishment process. Using two simple models results show that additive and synergistic stress can harm not only the energy budget of a single coral colony, but could also drive a species to extinction. A coral confronted by a disturbance may show a decrease in its energy budget due to either a change in environmental conditions such as reduced light penetration, or increased energy use for defensive mechanisms such as increased sediment rejecting activities. Adding other disturbances may reduce growth and/or reproductive output. If the energy budget decreases even further, processes involved in basal metabolism may suffer and the coral might finally die. Multiple stresses decrease maximum per capita growth of coral populations due to, for example, lower larval survival and decreased settlement success. Coral population extinctions may occur when interacting stresses are combined with Allee effects. Reduced coral densities and reduced reproductive output can lead to decreased fertilisation success. Hence, multiple stresses threaten not only adult corals, but also impact upon replenishment of coral reefs. This is a severe concern and highlights the importance of long-term studies of coral reef recovery and stress mitigation, particularly at a time where threats to reefs are expected to increase further in number, frequency and severity.

    Description: The article analyses Japanese approaches to dealing with eco-efficiency from an institutional perspective. Our main outlook is that though promising attempts have been made despite the overall economic crisis, a better horizontal coordination among both administrations and businesses is required. The governance processes can be analysed following approaches developed by New Institutional Economics and related policy analysis. The paper is divided into three sections. The first introduces the concept of eco-efficiency and explains the demand for regulatory policies from theories of market failures; the paper argues in favour of innovationoriented regulation. The second examines how a nation's institutional capabilities influence knowledge generation towards new solutions that sell on the markets; the "capacity-building approach" as developed by Martin Jänicke is explicitly discussed. The third section discusses contemporary Japanese policies with regard to waste, energy and material flows both on the governmental and the business level. It explains how European approaches diffuse and merge with domestic Japanese institutions. However, governance of eco-efficiency is expected to continue to differ due to ongoing national differences and specific conditions of knowledge creation.
