    Abstract: Solid waste management is becoming a major environmental and public health concern in emerging municipalities in Nepal. In this study, the life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach is used to address the environmental impacts of potential waste-treatment scenarios in Dhulikhel Municipality in Nepal. The assessment was based on four different scenarios – namely, scenario 1, landfilling; scenario 2, composting combined with landfilling; scenario 3, recycling, composting and landfilling; and scenario 4, recycling, anaerobic digestion and landfilling. The LCA methodology was developed, including the benefits and impact potentials of different unit processes in each scenario, also taking into consideration emissions from energy use. The environmental impacts from the scenarios were compared in terms of global warming potential, acidification potential and eutrophication potential. Among the four scenarios, scenario 4 (i.e. with anaerobic digestion) showed the most environmental advantage. Scenarios without biological treatment facilities are the least preferred option, as their impact is significantly greater than those of other options. Therefore, organic waste is recommended not to be disposed of in landfill sites even if the transportation activity increases, because the magnitude of methane avoidance increases with an increased amount of waste diversion to the biological treatment units.

    Abstract: Tsunami hazards can be considered as multiregional in their impacts, as transoceanic waves can propagate beyond local areas, as evidenced in recent tsunami events, e.g., the 2004 Indian Ocean and 2011 Great East Japan tsunamis. However, in a single event, the characteristics of a tsunami (wave amplitude and arrival time) can differ from location to location, due to a myriad of reasons including distance from the source, bathymetry of the seafloor, and local effects. Tsunami countermeasures cannot be similarly applied globally. It is prudent to investigate tsunami hazard characteristics at a regional scale in order to evaluate suitable tsunami countermeasures. On this basis, approximately 300 major historical tsunamis have been reproduced in this study based on seismic records over the last 400 years. In this study, numerical analysis was performed to reproduce tsunami waveforms at each global tidal station, and numerical results were verified by comparing them with the 2011 Great East Japan tsunami record data. Non-structural tsunami countermeasures were proposed and selected for each region based on two main criteria – wave amplitudes and arrival times. Evaluation of selected countermeasures indicate that planning for evacuation processes (such as evacuation route mapping, signage and evacuation drills) are important in all situations. For local large tsunamis, evacuation drills are essential to ensure a community is well prepared for self-evacuation due to the short amount of time available for evacuation. Early warning systems were most effective where tsunamis are of large and distant origins. On the other hand, it would be more appropriate to invest in public alert systems for tsunamis of smaller magnitudes. Using these selection criteria, combinations of countermeasures were proposed for each region to focus their attention on, based on the simulated results of the historical tsunami events. The end-goal of this study is to inform decision-making processes and regional planning of tsunami disaster management.

    Abstract: Improving the effectiveness of marine spatial management is crucial to preserve marine ecosystems and also to support the fisheries economy. In this study, we aimed to determine the spatial distribution and suitable habitats (spawning and nursery sites) of Sciaena umbra and Dentex dentex using catches data in Corsica Island. Random forest models have been used as they are highly accurate and are suited to predict rare species distribution. Predictive maps of spatial distribution based on presence/absence data showed a high degree of spatial variability between species. Suitable habitats were close to shore in shallow waters for S. umbra and deeper and further offshore for D. dentex. We also observed that spawning sites were mainly located on the west coast, while nursery areas were distributed all around the island for D. dentex. In addition, we demonstrated the important contribution of environmental factors and local habitats (depth and Posidonia oceanica meadows) in the selection of their suitable habitats. Our results provide new knowledge for understanding ecological processes such as the selection of suitable habitats by fish species. Based on this information, spatial mapping can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of resource management over the long term.

    Abstract: Objective: The aim of this review was to assess the roles of vitamin D in reducing the risk of respiratory tract infections, knowledge about the epidemiology of influenza and COVID-19, and how vitamin D supplementation might be a useful measure to reduce risk and also to outline the research progress and literature available of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients information regarding the ongoing pandemic.Unani medicines can play significant role as adjuvent therapy to control the adverse effect of COVID-19 and can also act asa a best Immunomodulator. Methods: Aliterature search was conducted using the databases PubMed, Medline, Scopus and Web of Science. We described overall possible association between COVID-19 and Vitamin D. We have searched by the names corona virus, covid-19 and vitamin D association with COVID-19. Result: Through several mechanisms, vitamin D can reduce the risk of infections by lowering viral rates of replication and also reducing concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines that are responsible for the inflammation and injuries in the pleura. Conclusion: It was additionally observed that COVID-19 and vitamin D have a crude substantial relationship and specifically the mortality induced through this infection. The most susceptible crew of the populace for COVID-19, the getting old population, is additionally the one that has the most deficit Vitamin D levels.

    Abstract: Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral disease, causes significant mortality and morbidity in low- to middle-income countries. A body of research indicates that women can be effective in implementing vector borne disease control, but they still face inequitable opportunities for participation, leadership and decision-making in the execution of dengue prevention and vector control programmes. Yet implementing informal environmental management practices to prevent mosquito vector breeding forms part of their domestic household responsibilities. Understanding the enablers and barriers to women’s equitable roles with men in formal and informal disease prevention, and the benefits of their participation could help to increase their role and may be a contributing factor to reducing disease rates. The objective of this qualitative meta-synthesis was to synthesise evidence about women’s roles in dengue prevention and control in the global south and generate insights around the barriers, enablers, and benefits. Methods Eight databases were searched from inception to 7 th December 2020. One investigator independently reviewed all titles and abstracts for relevant articles. Grey literature was searched using 34 websites of global health and international development organisations. Results A total of 18 articles representing qualitative research or the qualitative component of mixed methods studies from Latin American and Caribbean ( n  = 8), Asia ( n  = 9), and one international review were included in the meta-synthesis. Relevant scholarship from Africa was lacking. This meta-synthesis revealed five unique themes surrounding women’s participation, seven categories of barriers, six of enablers, four health, well-being and social benefits for individuals, and four for communities . Conclusion An analysis of the results confirmed that women’s participation in dengue prevention was not gender equitable, gender sensitive nor transformative although women are the primary human resource for household and community-based prevention. Women demonstrated specific qualities aiding successful implementation. Corrective action is urgently needed to shift unhelpful gender norms, and empower women into leadership and decision-making roles.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of environmental conditions of the subsidiaries’ host country in the process of developing global innovation. It is argued that, even though the local environment in which subsidiaries are placed must be taken into account, this is not the only important factor to directly create global innovation, but it also becomes necessary for the subsidiaries to be endowed with autonomy, in this sense allowing them to enjoy the local conditions for innovation purposes. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach is opted for the research development, while the hypotheses were evaluated from the analysis of the relationship between four constructs: global innovation, local market conditions, local competitive dynamics and autonomy to innovate. The structural equation modeling technique is applied, using data from 172 foreign subsidiaries located in Brazil. Findings The validity and reliability parameters analyzed in the proposed model were suitable (average variance extracted, Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability and discriminant validity). H1 (the better the market conditions of the host country, the greater the subsidiary’s autonomy to innovate) was not supported. However, both H2 and H3 were supported, suggesting the influence of local competitive dynamics on autonomy to innovate, and also the influence of autonomy to innovate on global innovation, respectively. Originality/value This paper provides some contributions for the advance in researches about the global innovation management, considering the subsidiaries’ perspective, showing the relevance of the subsidiary’s autonomy for the development of global innovation given a favorable local competitive dynamic.

    Abstract: Food webs are central entities mediating processes and external pressures in marine ecosystems. They are essential to understand and predict ecosystem dynamics and provision of ecosystem services. Paradoxically, utilization of food web knowledge in marine environmental conservation and resource management is limited. To better understand the use of knowledge and barriers to incorporation in management, we assess its application related to the management of eutrophication, chemical contamination, fish stocks, and non-indigenous species. We focus on the Baltic, a severely impacted, but also intensely studied and actively managed semi-enclosed sea. Our assessment shows food web processes playing a central role in all four areas, but application varies strongly, from formalized integration in management decisions, to support in selecting indicators and setting threshold values, to informal knowledge explaining ecosystem dynamics and management performance. Barriers for integration are complexity of involved ecological processes and that management frameworks are not designed to handle such information. We provide a categorization of the multi-faceted uses of food web knowledge and benefits of future incorporation in management, especially moving towards ecosystem-based approaches as guiding principle in present marine policies and directives. We close with perspectives on research needs to support this move considering global and regional change.
