    Description: According to classical plume theory, the Tristan da Cunha hotspot is thought to have played a major role in the rifting of the South Atlantic margins and the creation of the aseismic Walvis Ridge by impinging at the base of the continental lithosphere shortly before or during the breakup of the South Atlantic margins. But Tristan da Cunha is enigmatic, as it cannot be clearly identified as a hot-spot but classifies also highly as a more shallow type of anomaly that may actually have been caused by the opening of the South Atlantic. The equivocal character of Tristan is largely due to lack of geophysical data in this region. To understand the tectonic processes of the opening of the South Atlantic, the formation of the Walvis ridge and to understand whether Tristan da Cunha is the cause or the consequence of rifting, it is of central importance to characterize the region around Tristan da Cunha in a more coherent way. Within this research cruise we deployed 26 ocean bottom electromagnetic stations (OEBM) and 24 ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) for a long term acquisition (1 year) of magnetotelluric and seismological data, acquired bathymetry and gravity data and performed geological sampling on Tristan da Cunha. The data will be interpreted in the context of geochemical data and tectonic models developed within the SPP1375‚ South Atlantic Margin Processes and Links with onshore Evolution (SAMPLE).

    Description: Summary Meteor Cruise M81/1 was dedicated to the investigation of the distribution of dissolved and particulate trace metals and their isotopic compositions (TEIs) in the full water column of the tropical Atlantic Ocean and their driving factors including main external inputs and internal cycling and ocean circulation. The research program is embedded in the international GEOTRACES program (e.g. Henderson et al., 2007), which this cruise was an official part of and thus corresponds to GEOTRACES cruise GA11. This cruise was completely dedicated to the trace metal clean and contamination-free sampling of waters and particulates for subsequent analyses of the TEIs in the home laboratories of the national and international participants. Besides a standard rosette for the less contaminant prone metals, trace metal clean sampling was realized by using a dedicated and coated trace metal clean rosette equipped with Teflon-coated GO-FLO bottles operated via a polyester coated cable from a mobile winch that was thankfully made available by the U.S. partners of the GEOTRACES program for this cruise. The particulate samples were also collected under trace metal clean conditions using established in-situ pump systems. The cruise track led the cruise southward from the Canary Islands to 11°S and then continued northwestward along the northern margin of South America until it reached Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. The track crossed areas of major external inputs including exchange with the volcanic Canary Islands, the Saharan dust plume, as well as the plume of the Amazon outflow. In terms of internal cycling the equatorial high biological productivity band, as well as increased productivity associated with the Amazon Plume were covered. All major water masses contributing the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, as well as the distinct narrow equatorial surface and subsurface east-west current bands were sampled. A total of 17 deep stations were sampled for the different dissolved TEIs, which were in most cases accompanied by particulate sampling. In addition, surface waters were continuously sampled under trace metal clean conditions using a towed fish.

    Description: Summary During this cruise a detailed multi-disciplinary research program was conducted at the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) within the framework of the Kiel SFB 754. Investigations were primarily conducted along a depth transect at 12° S. Major aim was to advance understanding of how OMZ´s are maintained and to determine feedbacks of benthic nutrient release on the currently expanding Peruvian OMZ with a major focus on i. variability of benthic nutrient release in response to hydrodynamic forcing and regional differences in bottom water levels of oxygen (O2), nitrate (NO3-), nitrite (NO2-), and sedimentary carbon content, ii. diapycnal and advective fluxes of excess dinitrogen (N2), ammonium (NH4+), phosphorous (P), iron (Fe), silicate (Si), and radium isotopes between the benthic boundary layer, and the stratified interior ocean as well as their entrainment into the surface mixed layer and iii. processes involved in the respective benthic N, Fe, and P cycles. To achieve this goal, physical and biogeochemical measurements were conducted in the water column as well as at the sea floor. For investigations in the water column a total of 84 CTD casts, 41 micro-structure CTD, 20 in situ pump and 12 GoFlo deployments were performed. Sediment samples were obtained during 50 multiple corer casts, 12 gravity corers and 10 benthic chamber lander deployments. Furthermore a profiler lander was used to determine in situ microprofiles of O2, NO3- and nitrous oxide (N2O) in situ. Microprofiles were obtained using glass-microsensors that were pushed into the sediment in 300 μm increments. In order to obtain time series data on the oxygen distribution and the current regime oceanographic moorings were distributed along the 12°S transect in addition to four benthic satellite-landers each equipped with upward looking ADCPs. Lastly, a glider swarm was established at 12°S. These instruments were deployed for the duration of cruise M92 as well as for the subsequent M93 cruise. Deviating from the cruise proposal, more time was spent for station works at the depth transect at 12° S. Major aim of this cruise was to obtain a coherent data set of all involved groups, which however took slightly more time than originally planned, yet bears a high scientific potential. Additionally, it was discovered that at 12° S in shallow waters sulphide was released from the seabed into the bottom water. Furthermore, in water depths from about 120 to 200 m nitrite in addition to nitrate was available in high concentrations which affects the benthic nitrogen cycle to a hitherto unknown extent. Hence these stations were more intensely investigated than originally planned. Weather conditions were fine and all deployments of the scientific gear went very well. It is expected that after analyses and synthesis of the different data sets from the different disciplines the scientific questions above can be addressed to broad extent.

    Description: A physical - biogeochemical survey was carried out in the northeastern tropical Atlantic and in the western tropical South Atlantic. The main objective of the works in the oxygen minimum zone of the eastern tropical North Atlantic was to improve oxygen budget estimates. Additional objectives were to investigate the role of zooplankton for fluxes of particulate and dissolved organic matter and to advance quantitative understanding of nitrogen fixation in the tropical Atlantic. The main objective of the measurements program in the western tropical South Atlantic was to investigate the variability of transport and water mass properties of the western boundary circulation. A major component of the work program was the recovery of nine and the redeployment of eight moorings. The moorings positioned off Cape Verde, in the tropical northeastern Atlantic and at the western boundary off Brazil are collecting velocity, oxygen, temperature, and salinity time series since several years. All moorings were successfully recovered and redeployed. Section work focused on 23°W from 15°N to 5.5°S, on 11.5°S from 32°W to the coast of Brazil and on 5°S from 29.5°W to the coast of Brazil. Parameters measured along the sections included temperature-salinity-depth, oxygen and turbulence profiles, lowered acoustic Doppler current profiles, underwater vision profiles, shipboard velocity profiles, multinet and Working Party 2 net casts, and photosynthetically active radiation profiles. Water samples were analyzed for numerous variables including salinity, oxygen concentrations, tracer concentrations (CFC-12, SF6, CF3SF5), nutrients in micro and nano range, and halocarbons. Filtered samples were taken for NanoSIMS, flow cytometry, dissolved organic phosphorus, DNA/RNA, particulate organic matter, particulate organic nitrogen, and chlorophyll a. Samples of Heme content and dissolved iron were taken from a towed trace metal clean fish. Furthermore, on-board incubations to quantify nitrogen and carbon fixation and primary productivity were performed. The measurement program was successfully completed and all data sets were acquired as planned.

    Description: Meteor Cruise M121 was dedicated to the investigation of the distribution of dissolved and particulate trace metals and their isotopic compositions (TEIs) in the full water column of the Angola Basin and the northernmost Cape Basin. A key aim was to determine the driving factors for the observed distributions, which includes the main external inputs, as well as internal cycling and ocean circulation. The research program of the cruise is official part of the international GEOTRACES program (www.geotraces.org) and cruise M121 corresponds to GEOTRACES cruise GA11. Subject of the cruise was the trace metal clean and contamination-free sampling of waters and particulates for subsequent analyses of the TEIs in the home laboratories of the national and international participants. Besides a standard rosette for the less contaminant prone metals, trace metal clean sampling was realized by using for the first time a new dedicated, coated trace metal clean rosette equipped with Teflon-coated GO-FLO bottles operated via a plastic coated cable from a mobile winch of GEOMAR Kiel. The particulate samples were collected under trace metal clean conditions using established in-situ pump systems operated from Meteor’s Aramid line. The cruise track led from Walvis Bay northwards along the West African margin until 3°S, then turned west until the Zero Meridian, which was followed southwards until 30°S. Then the cruise track turned east again until the Namibian margin was reached and then completed the near shore track northwards until Walvis Bay. The track crossed areas of major external inputs including dust from the Namib Desert and exchange with the west African continental margin and with the oxygen depleted shelf sediments of the Benguela upwelling, as well as with the plume of the Congo outflow, that was followed from its mouth northwards. Our investigations of internal cycling included the extremely high productivity associated with the Benguela Upwelling and the elevated productivity of the Congo plume contrasting with the extremely oligotrophic waters of the southeastern Atlantic Gyre. The links between TEI biogeochemistry and the nitrogen cycle forms an important aspect of our study. The major water masses contributing the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation were sampled in order to investigate if particular TEI signatures are suitable as water mass tracers, in particular near the ocean margin and in the restricted deep Angola Basin. A total of 51 full water column stations were sampled for the different dissolved TEIs, which were in most cases accompanied by sampling for particulates and radium isotopes using the in-situ pumps. In addition, surface waters were continuously sampled under trace metal clean conditions using a towed fish and aerosol and rain samples were continuously collected.

    Description: The cruise M133 SACROSS (South Atlantic Crossing) was a multidisciplinary ocean survey of the South Atlantic gyre roughly along 34.5°S. This transect is covered by the international SAMOC moored array and also the path of the internationally agreed AX18 XBT line. Most of the measurements were based on using underway methods including near-surface water sampling for the determination of SST, and SSS as well as shipboard ADCP current observations. Moreover, an underway CTD allowed to sample the upper 300-400 m every hour. Chemical analysis of surface waters as well as atmospheric parameter were of scientific interest to both compare different regions with each other but also to document long term trends. At the western and eastern boundary current regime full water column water mass properties were measured. Upper ocean 10-700m plankton assemblages allow improving the calibration of sediment proxies. Water samples for later lab-based biodiversity analysis were taken. A number of smaller student projects were carried out as part of a global ocean learning and capacity building effort. Finally, continuous swath bathymetry mapping was made, and a number of floats and drifters were launched in support of the global ocean observing system arrays. The cruise was very successful, all objectives were reached, and the measurements were carried out as planned.
