    Notes: Polycrystalline Fe100−xPtx alloy thin films with Pt composition x=25–67 at. % were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering on natural-oxidized silicon wafer substrates, then postannealed in vacuum at various temperatures and over different periods. The effects of film composition, magnetic layer thickness, annealing temperature, and annealing time on the magnetic properties parallel and normal to the film plane were investigated. Films with high in-plane coercivity could be obtained by annealing the films in the temperature range between 400 and 650 °C. Optimum in-plane squareness and coercivity of the film occurred at a film composition of Fe50Pt50 with thickness of about 200 nm after annealing at 600 °C for 30 min. The analyses of transmission electron microscopy diffraction patterns indicated that this annealed Fe50Pt50 film was nearly entirely in the fct γ1-FePt phase. The average grain size of this Fe50Pt50 film was about 85 nm. The grain size was almost independent of the cooling rate after annealing, but the magnetic hardening mechanism and coercivity of the annealed film was largely dependent on the cooling rate. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: Low-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials have recently received enormous attention for biomedical applications. However, increasing evidence indicates that they are cytotoxic and can cause inflammatory responses in the body. Here, we show that monocrystalline nanodiamonds (NDs) synthesized by high-pressure-high-temperature (HPHT) methods and purified by air oxidation and strong oxidative acid treatments have excellent hemocompatibility with negligible hemolytic and thrombogenic activities. Cell viability assays with human primary endothelial cells suggested that the oxidized HPHT-NDs (dimensions of 35–500 nm) are non-cytotoxic. No significant elevation of the inflammatory cytokine levels of IL-1β and IL-6 was detected in mice after intravenous injection of the nanocrystals in vivo. Using a hindlimb-ischemia mouse model, we demonstrated that 35-nm NDs after covalent conjugation with polyarginine are useful as a drug delivery vehicle of heparin for prolonged anticoagulation treatment.     Description: The fusion dynamic mechanism of heavy ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier is complicated and still not very clear up to now. Accordingly, a self-consistent method based on the CCFULL calculations has been developed and applied for an ongoing study of the effect of the positive Q -value neutron transfer (PQNT) channels in this work. The typical experimental fusion data of Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni is analyzed within the unified calculation scheme. The PQNT effect in near-barrier fusion is further confirmed based on the self-consistent analysis and extracted quantitatively.
