    Norwegian Sea-Expedition 1969 (1973)

    Description: In July, August and September 1969 a joint German-Icelandic-Norwegian-Expedition investigated time- and space-dependent oceanographic processes in the Norwegian Sea (fig. 1) and in the waters east of theIcelandic Shelf as weil as the geological and geophysical structure of the Norwegian continental slope, the Norwegian Basin and the Jan-Mayen-Ridge. The participating research vessels were "Hafthor" from Iceland, "Helland-Hansen" from Norway, "Anton Dohrn" and "Planet" from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and as shooting vessel "Nordkapp" from Norway. "Meteor" (FRG) was eliminated from the measuring programme because of engine trouble shortly before begin. Due to the prolonged activity of "Planet" the originally planned investigations were almost entirely able to be carried out. The measuring programme and the preliminary results of the geological and geophysical working groups are dealt with separately (Closs et al. 1972). Systematic sounding from "Planet" in the main working area between 62° and 63° N, and 3° 25' and 4° 50' E forms the basis for a special contour map (see supplement). As a result of improved mooring technique in the course of the expedition's oceanographic measuring programme an almost one hundred percental retrieval of instruments was achieved and herewith 49 current and 55 continuous temperature recordings over 12 to 45 days in depths between 10 and 800 m were obtained. Hydrographie sections, nine anchor- and driftstations as well as one in five days six times successively passed through triangular course gave information over stratification and its periodic changes. The distribution of stations and the position of the moored self-contained instruments in the main working area is found in figure 2. Figure 3 gives insight into the registration period and depth of the instruments of the by "Planet" in cross formation moored systems I to VI. Parallel to the work clone off Norway observations were made as to variability of physical and chemical parameters in east Iceland waters.

    Description: Der Strommesser registriert selbsttätig photographisch Stromrichtung und Stromgeschwindigkeit im Meere, und zwar bis zu einer Meßdauer von vier Wochen in Abständen von fünf Minuten. Er besitzt Eigenauftrieb und ist deshalb einfach zu verankern. Er kann bis Meßtiefen von 50 m ausgelegt werden. Dieser neue Strommesser nutzt die Vorzüge des Schaufelradstrommessers von H. Rauschelbach, der sich seit 25 Jahrerr in vielen hundert Auslegungen bewährt hat. Er vermeidet einen wesentlichen Nachteil dieses Gerätes, der besonders in gezeitenstromarmen Meeren wie der Ostsee ins Gewicht fällt, nämlich die hohe Anlaufgeschwindigkeit. Das neue Gerät ist ein Propellerstrommesser, der bei nur 2,5 cm/sec Stromgeschwindigkeit anspringt. Selbst in Bodennähe randlicher Meeresbuchten wie der Eckernförder Bucht konnten brauchbare Strommessungen über längere Zeiträume erzielt werden.

    Description: Die Betrachtung der Veränderlichkeit im Meer ist in diesem Aufsatz auf physikalische Probleme beschränkt, die Schichtung und Strömung betreffen. An ausgewählten Beispielen wird dargelegt, daß die ozeanographische Forschung gegenwärtig auf die vorrangige Behandlung dieser Probleme zusteuert (Abb. 1-8). Die Erfassung der zeitlichen Veränderlichkeit von Schichtung und Strömung wird erschwert, indem neuerdings starke kleinräumige Unterschiede nachgewiesen wurden: eine Feinstruktur der Schichtung (Abb. 9) und eine lokale lnhomogenität (Abb. 10). Eine systematische Untersuchung der Veränderlichkeit im Nordost-Atlantischen Ozean unter sechs verschiedenartigen Naturbedingungen wird vorgeschlagen (Abb. 11) und der Plan eines Beitrages hierzu, der mit F. S. "Meteor" im Jahre 1967 durchgeführt werden soll, angegeben (Abb. 12). The consideration of the variability in the ccean in this article is restricted to physical problems with regard to layering and currents. For selected examples it is shown that the present oceanographic research is essentially directed towards these problems (Fig. 1 to 8). The consideration of non-steady variability of layering and currents is complicated as considerable differences in small scale could be investigated recently: a fine-structure of layering (Fig. 9) and a local inhomogenity (Fig. 10). A systematical investigation of the variability in the NE-Atlantic on six different environmental conditions is proposed (Fig. 11). The plan of a con ribution to this proposal is given. It will be carried out with R. V. "Meteor" in 1967.

Die schiffs- und maschinenbauliche Ausführung, die elektrischen und speziell wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen werden umrissen. Die beiden Bordlabors und ihre Spezialausstattung, die verschiedenen Winden und die Sondereinrichtungen werden beschrieben. Erste Erfahrungen mit dem Schiff werden aufgeführt. In this report the reasons are mentioned why the new research vessel "ALKOR" was built, and the requirements are outlined with which the ship should comply. A detailed description is given of the construction of the ship. Electrical and special scientific appliances are described. Both ship laboratories and their specific outfits, the various winches, and some special arrangements are discribed. First experiences with the ship are outlined.
