    Notes: Iron particles of diameters in the range 5.5–8.5 nm have been synthesized within a suitably chosen oxide glass by subjecting the latter to a 3Na+(arrow-right-and-left)Fe3+ exchange reaction followed by reduction treatment in hydrogen. Magnetic measurements have been carried out over the temperature range 20–300 K. The coercive force increases as the iron particle size is decreased. The maximum value of coercive force corresponding to 0 K (Hc0)∼548 Oe is obtained for a specimen having diameter of 6.5 nm. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant in the case of nanosized iron particles is estimated to be one order of magnitude higher than that of bulk iron. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this study we investigate the effects of Ce doping in R1−xAxMnO3 (R=La, Ce, and A=Sr, Ce) on the magnetic and transport properties of this system. For La1−xCexMnO3 (LCMO), an increase in Ce concentration is accompanied by an increase in TC from 225 to 236 K, as well as an increase in the electrical resistivity. An extremely high resistivity is observed in the new system Ce1−xSrxMnO3 (CSMO) which becomes insulating below its Curie temperature of 43 K. A maximum magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of 40% for CSMO and 53% for LCMO is observed. A larger change in resistivity is seen to correspond to an increase in the Ce concentration, however this is offset by an overall resistivity increase which keeps the MR ratio low. The high resistivity may be due to unreacted oxides in the samples. If true, the amount of impurity appears to be proportional to the Ce doping. If this impurity level can be reduced, a significant colossal magnetoresistance effect could be exhibited by these systems. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this letter we report large magnetoresistance (MR) in ceramic samples of La1−xSrxMnO3 (0.1≤x≤0.4) in the temperature range 4.2 K≤T≤350 K in fields up to 6 T. We find that a large negative and isotopic MR exists for the whole composition range studied and the absolute value of resistivity change on application of magnetic field is more for samples with lower x which have higher resistivity. We find that the large MR occurs in the ferromagnetic state only and MR has a close relation with the magnetization M. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A device that uses a siphon tube to establish a hydraulic connection between the bottom of an onshore standpipe and a point at the bottom of a water body was designed and tested for monitoring surface-water levels. Water is added to the standpipe to a level sufficient to drive a complete slug of water through the siphoning tube and to flush all air out of the system. The water levels in the standpipe and the water body equilibrate and provide a measurable static water surface in the standpipe. The siphon gage was designed to allow quick and accurate year-round measurements with minimal maintenance. Currently available devices for monitoring surface-water levels commonly involve time-consuming and costly installation and surveying, and the movement of reference points and the presence of ice cover in cold regions cause discontinuity and inaccuracy in the data collected. Installation and field testing of a siphon gage using 0.75-in-diameter polyethylene tubing at Ashumet Pond in Falmouth, Massachusetts, demonstrated that the siphon gage can provide long-term data with a field effort and accuracy equivalent to measurement of ground-water levels at an observation well.

    Notes: Two experiments assessed the effect of current and elevated levels of ultravioletB (UV-B) radiation on forage crop production. The effect of current levels of UV-B radiation was assessed by comparing the growth of eight cultivars of four legume and four grass species for three growing seasons (1994–96) under simulated sward conditions in the field. An exclusion system using cellulose diacetate or polyester covers provided comparable growing conditions for the plants, except for the presence or absence of ambient UV-B radiation, respectively. The second experiment studied the effect of elevated levels of UV-B on eight cultivars of two legume and two grass species in the greenhouse under simulated sward conditions. Natural lighting with sufficient supplemental light was used to provide ideal growing conditions for a 16-h day length. Separate sets of UV lights were installed to provide UV-B levels at approximately the same intensity as would be found in mid summer, and 33% and 66% more than this value. A fourth treatment consisted of removing UV-B radiation by using a polyester filter. Plant production was measured in both experiments. In 1994, field herbage yields from all young grass and legume seedlings were not significantly affected by the exclusion of ambient UV-B radiation, with the exception of alfalfa. Intra-specific variations with alfalfa yields were found for reduced levels of UV-B radiation. In general, these trends persisted as stands matured during two post seeding years. In the second experiment, no significant differences were observed for all tested species with increasing levels of UV-B radiation, except with some alfalfa cultivars and one birdsfoot trefoil cultivar. Collectively, these results demonstrate that in the northern latitudes young and mature plants of the studied species are resistant to current and potentially higher levels of solar UV-B radiation, with the exception of some alfalfa cultivars. The yield of these cultivars increased under enhanced levels of UV-B radiation in the greenhouse and decreased when UV-B was excluded in the field.

    Notes: The evolution of cells of the monocyte-macropbage lineage (MML cells) in the spleen of Leishmania donovani (LD) infected BALB/c mice was studied. Spleen cells were fractionated on a discontinuous percoll gradient and adherent cells (AC) were purified from fractionated spleen cells by adherence steps that appeared at the interfaces of 25–35%, 35–40%, 40–45% and 45–50% percoll gradients. The AC were characterized as MML cells on the basis of positive staining for non-specific esterase. Adherent cells that appeared at the interfaces of 25–35% and 40–45% were defined as A and C, respectively, and both of them showed extreme variation in a progressive infection. It was observed that A supported parasite replication whereas C remained refractory when infected with LD in vitro. Furthermore, when A cells and C cells were used as antigen-presenting cells to stimulate mixed population of IFN-γ producing and IL-4 producing T-cells, it was observed that IL-4 and IFN-γ were the predominating cytokine in the T-cell supernatant, respectively. Both A and C were found to be increased hand-in-hand up to 5 months of infection and from then on A decreased and C increased in their numerical strength (A-C reciprocity). The evolution of A-C reciprocity coincided with the gradual reduction in the parasitaemia in the spleen suggesting that this may contribute to the acquisition of anti-leishmania immunity.
