Beschreibung: Almost 50 years ago, the first World Data Centers (WDC) have been founded through the International Council for Scientific Unions (ICSU) in order to archive and distribute data collected from the observational programs of the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year. Originally established in the United States, Europe, Russia, and Japan, the WDC system has since expanded to 53 centers in 12 countries. Its holdings include a wide range of solar, geophysical, environmental, and human dimensions data covering timescales ranging from seconds to millennia and providing baseline information for research in many ICSU disciplines, especially for monitoring changes in the geosphere and biosphere-gradual or sudden, foreseen or unexpected, natural or man-made.The conference was hosted by WDC-MARE, the World Data Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM, University of Bremen, Germany), and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven, Germany). Among the 31 WDCs and 70 conference participants, Bernard Minster and Hartmut Grassl, ICSU Panel on World Data Centers chairs, honored the accomplishments of 50 years scientific data management and contemplated past deficiencies and future requirements. In order to revise a 50 years old structure and to develop appropriate short- and medium-term strategies, the conference was dedicated to four main subjects.

Beschreibung: Since the beginning of the IODP program a great effort has been done to implement an information system benefitting all involved partners in IODP (USIO, CDEX; ECORD).The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is developing a web based information service (Scientific Earth Drilling Information Service, SEDIS) - to facilitate access to all data and information related to scientific ocean drilling, regardless of origin or location of data. SEDIS will be designed to integrate distributed scientific drilling data via metadata. The three main data contributors to SEDIS currently are the IODP implementing organizations (IOs) from the United States (USIO), Japan (CDEX) and Europe with Canada (ESO). Each IO uses its own drilling platform and data management system. Currently SEDIS integrates the data search of the IO databases by harvesting distributed metadata without the necessity to centralize the data storage. SEDIS will be expanded at a later stage to include other scientific drilling data from continental or lake drilling. SEDIS will also include a publication search engine and advanced data search, visualization and mapping tools.SEDIS will be developed in three phases:Phase I [finished]: Metadata portal for data discovery and harvesting. Metadata will be provided by the IOs (http://sedis.iodp.org)Phase II [in progress]: Search database for publications, reports, minutes, citations and possibly post expedition researchPhase III: Advanced data search, visualization and mapping toolsThe system uses international standards for metadata/data exchange and transfer by implementing open source components.

Beschreibung: Earthquakes, often succeeded by landslides and tsunamis, are the biggest societal threat to coastal areas, where about half of the worlds population lives. The monitoring of their precursor phenomena is hence the most efficient way for timely warnings. In cooperation between geoscientific research institutions, informatics, and industry, we propose to develop a state-of-the-art intelligent pressure sensor to be used in plugnwork networks and warning systems on- and offshore. Pressure measurement on and below the ground focuses on earthquake precursors, but is easily adapted to slope stability monitoring or tsunami warning systems. A crucial objective is to implement a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) based on current OGC standards that provides the basic interoperability and services, the plugnwork features including the intelligent sensors. This includes the implementation of a sensor registry, networking with the PANGAEA data archive and data warehouse used for near real-time evaluation in particular of larger and/or more complex data sets , the embedding of semantics including the construction of ontologies, and finally collection and processing of data from the two test beds FINO and ANTARES. In addition, selected proprietary sensors will be made compatible by wrappers and integrated into the network.
