    Description: Soil degradation is a major threat for European soils and therefore, the European Commission recommends intensifying research on soil monitoring to capture changes over time and space. Imaging spectroscopy is a promising technique to create spatially accurate topsoil maps based on hyperspectral remote sensing data. We tested the application of a local partial least squares regression (PLSR) to airborne HySpex and simulated satellite EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program) data acquired in north-eastern Germany to quantify the soil organic carbon (SOC) content. The approach consists of two steps: (i) the local PLSR uses the European LUCAS (land use/cover area frame statistical survey) Soil database to quantify the SOC content for soil samples from the study site in order to avoid the need for wet chemistry analyses, and subsequently (ii) a remote sensing model is calibrated based on the local PLSR SOC results and the corresponding image spectra. This two-step approach is compared to a traditional PLSR approach using measured SOC contents from local samples. The prediction accuracy is high for the laboratory model in the first step with R2 = 0.86 and RPD = 2.77. The HySpex airborne prediction accuracy of the traditional approach is high and slightly superior to the two-step approach (traditional: R2 = 0.78, RPD = 2.19; two-step: R2 = 0.67, RPD = 1.79). Applying the two-step approach to simulated EnMAP imagery leads to a lower but still reasonable prediction accuracy (traditional: R2 = 0.77, RPD = 2.15; two-step: R2 = 0.48, RPD = 1.41). The two-step models of both sensors were applied to all bare soils of the respective images to produce SOC maps. This local PLSR approach, based on large scale soil spectral libraries, demonstrates an alternative to SOC measurements from wet chemistry of local soil samples. It could allow for repeated inexpensive SOC mapping based on satellite remote sensing data as long as spectral measurements of a few local samples are available for model calibration.

    Description: Soil erosion is generally recognized as the dominant process of land degradation. The formation and expansion of gullies is often a highly significant process of soil erosion. However, our ability to assess and simulate gully erosion and its impacts remains very limited. This is especially so at regional to continental scales. As a result, gullying is often overlooked in policies and land and catchment management strategies. Nevertheless, significant progress has been made over the past decades. Based on a review of 〉590 scientific articles and policy documents, we provide a state-of-the-art on our ability to monitor, model and manage gully erosion at regional to continental scales. In this review we discuss the relevance and need of assessing gully erosion at regional to continental scales (Section 1); current methods to monitor gully erosion as well as pitfalls and opportunities to apply them at larger scales (section 2); field-based gully erosion research conducted in Europe and European Russia (section 3); model approaches to simulate gully erosion and its contribution to catchment sediment yields at large scales (section 4); data products that can be used for such simulations (section 5); and currently existing policy tools and needs to address the problem of gully erosion (section 6). Section 7 formulates a series of recommendations for further research and policy development, based on this review. While several of these sections have a strong focus on Europe, most of our findings and recommendations are of global significance.

    Description: The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) is a spaceborne German hyperspectral satellite mission that aims at monitoring and characterizing the Earth’s environment on a global scale. After several years delay due to a major design issue to meet the mission requirements, the mission is now back on track and planned for launch in 2021. This paper presents an update of the mission status with recent activities and developments from the space and the ground segment. Furthermore, a draft plan for the independent validation of EnMAP radiance and reflectance products was developed and will be introduced, along with highlights of the science preparatory activities in 2019 including airborne campaigns, algorithm consolidations, and HYPERedu education initiative.

Further, this paper presents a specific focus on the planning for the independent EnMAP data product validation.

    Description: Summary of the local PLSR methodology: Quantification of soil parameters e.g. organic carbon, in field soil samples using spectrally similar soil samples from a large scale soil spectral database. For this purpose, Laboratory spectra measured from the field soil samples are required and compared with the laboratory spectra from the soil spectral database. The most similar soil samples from the soil spectral database are then used to train a separate PLSR model for each field sample. Each model is applied to the respective field sample to quantify the soil parameter. The localPLSR thus represents an alternative to the conventional quantification (in the chemical laboratory) of spectrally active soil parameters. For this purpose, laboratory spectra of the field samples need to be measured with laboratory spectrometers.

    Description: The multiple-year drought that started in 2011 and reached climax in 2015 was the most severe and prolonged one in the semiarid northeastern (NE) Brazil in recent decades. This study aimed to investigate the reservoir surface water volume (SWV) variation in NE Brazil from 2009 to 2017 in four representative regions covering a total area of approximately 10,000 km2 there and encompassing 2,140 reservoirs (areas range from 0.003 to 21 km2). High-resolution (10 m) digital elevation models (DEMs) were generated from the TanDEM-X data acquired during October–December 2015 to represent the reservoirs' bathymetric maps. The water extents in the reservoirs were delineated from high-resolution (6.5 m) RapidEye images acquired during 2009–2017. The combination of the aforementioned two variables yielded reservoir SWV with an accuracy of 0.64 × 106–1.06 × 106 m3, corresponding to 3.1%–5.6% of the maximum SWV in the reservoirs. The results showed that: 1) 81%–99% of the reservoirs in the four regions were from the groups with maximum water extent 〈50 ha and contributed 2%–59% of the regional reservoir SWV. In contrast, 0.6%–20% of the reservoirs were from the group of 〉50 ha and contributed 40%–98% to the regional SWV; 2) From 2009 to 2017, reservoir SWV in the four regions decreased at the rates of 2.3 × 106–17.8 × 106 m3/year; and 3) The SWV in the reservoirs responded differently to the regional terrestrial water budget, i.e. the differences between precipitation and evapotranspiration (P-ET). This study filled the data gap of bathymetric maps for the 2140 reservoirs, regardless of their sizes and macrophyte coverage. The SWV variations derived in those reservoirs over a period covering the recent drought can support better preparedness for drought in NE Brazil and better understanding of the regional hydrology in semi-arid regions.

    Description: In preparation of the German spaceborne imaging spectroscopy mission EnMAP (The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program) and its upcoming launch in early 2022, the data product validation activities have been intensified. As part of the science preparation and mission support project led by the German Research Center (GFZ) Potsdam, the overall quality of the official EnMAP products has to be accessed and evaluated independently from the data quality control activities performed by the Ground Segment at DLR EOC. Therefore, the radiometric, spectral, reflective, geometric and general quality of the three official EnMAP products (L1B, L1C and L2A) has to be validated during the commissioning and nominal phase.This paper presents an update of the data product validation activities, an in-depth insight into the overall approach and into specifically designed methods described in the EnMAP Product Validation Plan.
