Description: The production and analysis of the Antarctic digital magnetic anomaly map will be greatly aided by complementary gravity data. They help to constrain thickness variations of the crust and related magnetic effects that may be used for correcting long-wavelength errors in near-surface magnetic survey compilations. They also limit ambiguities in geological interpretations of magnetic anomalies. Antarctic free-air gravity anomalies are available from the 1° Earth Gravity Model 1996 (EGM96). These coefficients satisfy gravity estimates from satellite radar altimetry, as well as surface or near-surface measurements in roughly 75% of the 30 arc-minute blocks south of 60°S. For the remaining blocks, the EGM96 predictions are limited in resolution to degree 70 based on satellite orbital analyses. Anomaly predictions over the unsurveyed regions of the Antarctic will be greatly improved by additional orbital measurements from the pending low-altitude (i.e., 150-500 km) CHAMP and GRACE satellite missions of ESA and NASA, respectively. Shorter wavelength anomalies are available from Geosat and ERS-1 & 2 radar altimetry data for marine regions away from the shoreline that compare very well with modern, good-quality shipborne data. Over the Gunnerus Ridge region, for example, satellite altimetry-derived free-air gravity predictions at a 3-5 km grid interval have an accuracy of about 3 mgals or less.

Notes: A ferro-antiferroelectric Li0.7Na0.3NbO3 solid solution crystal was grown from the melt by the Czochralski method. It has been found from the high temperature x-ray diffraction that the crystal is orthorhombic with a unit cell of dimensions a=5.374(9) A(ring), b=5.152(1) A(ring), and c=16.738(0) A(ring) at 25 °C, and undergoes a structural phase transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal at 480 °C. It was confirmed from the observation of the D-E hysteresis loop and the pyroelectric measurements that the mixed crystal Li0.7Na0.3NbO3 undergoes a first order ferroelectric phase transition at 480 °C. In the dielectric measurements, the dielectric behavior in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature reveals a diffusive character and also a pronounced dielectric dispersion due to an ionic hopping observed over the wide temperature range near 298 °C.

Notes: Deep levels in Si-doped In0.49Ga0.51P grown by compound-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have been investigated by deep level transient spectroscopy. In0.49Ga0.51P samples were grown by compound-source MBE with V/III ratios of 4, 10, and 17. Depending upon the V/III ratio three major deep levels with activation energies of 0.26±0.02, 0.36±0.02, and 0.82±0.05 eV were observed. The effect of thermal annealing on the behavior of deep levels was also investigated. The deep levels in InGaP grown by compound-source MBE showed behavior of phosphorus antisites and related complexes unlike those found in solid-source MBE-grown InGaP that showed behavior of phosphorus vacancies and related complexes. Si-doped InGaP layers grown with a V/III ratio of 4 showed trap concentration and capture cross section as low as 1.38×1014 cm−3 and 2.9×10−16 cm2, respectively. The results indicate the potential of InGaP grown by compound-source MBE for use in improved low-frequency noise applications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background : Helicobacter pylori infection elicits persistent neutrophil infiltration in gastric mucosa. The expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and inhibition of apoptosis in the neutrophils could contribute to the pathogenesis of H. pylori infection. Rebamipide, a mucosal protective and ulcer-healing drug, has been known to inhibit neutrophil activation.Aim : To evaluate the effect of rebamipide on the neutrophils activated by H. pylori water-soluble proteins. Methods : After neutrophils were stimulated with H. pylori water extract (HPWE) or pre-treated with rebamipide, the expression of COX-2 mRNA and protein was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Prostaglandin (PG) E2 synthesis was determined by radioimmunoassay. Neutrophil apoptosis was evaluated by cytosolic oligonucleosome-bound DNA ELISA and caspase-3 activity was measured by the detection of p-nitroanilide after cleavage from labelled substrate. Results : Stimulation with HPWE up-regulated COX-2 expression and PGE2 secretion, and inhibited neutrophil apoptosis. Rebamipide suppressed PGE2 secretion from neutrophils dose-dependently. Rebamipide, however, did not affect neutrophil apoptosis and caspase-3 activity. Conclusions : Rebamipide effectively suppressed PGE2 secretion from neutrophils activated by H. pylori water-soluble proteins. This is another possible mechanism of gastric mucosal protection by rebamipide.

Notes: Background:  The genetic background of atopic dermatitis (AD) is not clearly understood. Interleukin (IL)-10 is a powerful Th-2 cell cytokine produced by lymphoid cells that exerts its function by inhibiting macrophage/monocyte and T-cell lymphocyte replication and secretion of inflammatory cytokines [IL-1, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNFA), IL-6, IL-8 and IL-12].Objective:  In an effort to discover additional polymorphism(s) in genes whose variant(s) have been implicated in total immunoglobulin E (IgE) level in AD patients, we scrutinized the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL10 gene as a potent candidate for contributing to the level of IgE in serum. Methods:  We recruited 334 AD patients and assayed their serum total IgE levels using the LIPA-200 system. Four SNPs in the IL10 gene were genotyped using the single-base extension (SBE) method. Logistic regression analyses were performed with single polymorphisms and haplotypes (ht) to determine their association with the level of serum total IgE.Results:  Genetic association analysis of total serum IgE in AD patients revealed that one of the IL10 ht, IL10-ht2, was associated with decreased serum total IgE in gene dose-dependent manner (P = 0.02–0.001).Conclusions:  It was predicted that the inhibition of innate immunity by increased IL-10 production in IL10-ht2-bearing individuals might be associated with decreased total serum IgE levels among AD patients. The greater effects of IL10 ht on decreased total serum IgE levels suggest that the effect of IL-10 polymorphism might be the result of a combined genotype (ht) rather than single polymorphisms.
