    Notes: A new method to improve the morphology and the microstructure of sputtered bismuth-substituted garnet films for optical storage is discussed. The method employs a high ramp up rate and recurrent annealing as well as quenching in an air environment, which results in smaller grain size, smoother surface, and less void volume in the garnet films than that from a conventional oven annealing. We have discovered that samples prepared with a more recurrent annealing only appeared as a single garnet phase, and the samples with a less recurrent annealing appeared as a garnet phase as well as DyFeO3 phase. We observed the microstructure of the annealed films with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By applying the new method, the as-deposited films had been successfully crystallized to the (BiDy)3(FeGa)5O12 garnet phase with the grain size of about 300–400 A(ring). They exhibited excellent magneto-optical properties with a high coercive force about 1300 Oe and an effective Kerr angle of 1.5°. The crystallization process of as-deposited amorphous films as well as the structure, composition, and magnetic and magneto-optical properties of the crystallized garnet films were examined.

    Notes: Effects of helium ion double implantation on contiguous disk (CD) bubble devices have been examined by x-ray diffraction, FMR, and annealing techniques. The results were compared with static and dynamic performance of CD devices. Samples had a composition of Sm0.29Lu0.40Y1.42Ca0.89Fe 4.11Ge0.89O12 with stripe width 3 μm, Hc=143 Oe and were implanted with 190-keV helium at 4.5×1015 He+/cm2 and 100-keV helium at 3 ×1015 He+/cm2. X-ray diffraction curves show that He ion double implantation gives a more uniform strain profile with a main strain of 0.84% and a strain induced anisotropy field of 3100 Oe. FMR spectrum results show an implantation induced anisotropy field of 3185 Oe which is in good agreement with x-ray diffraction result. The main strain decreases linearly with the annealing temperature Ta extrapolating to zero at l000 °C. The implantation induced anisotropy field also decreases with Ta, but exhibits an excess of 600 Oe over the strain anisotropy field. This excess is attributed to the suppression of growth induced anisotropy by He ion implantation. The measurements of the bubble collapse field and propagation margin on a CD track with 12-μm period at 100 kHz show that annealing at temperatures higher than 300 °C causes the performance of CD devices to degrade very rapidly. The margin becomes narrow and the minimum drive field increases. Annealing above 500 °C will kill the device.

    Notes: Abstract A continuing theme of our laboraory, has been the understanding of human DNA polymerases at the structural level. We have purified DNA polymerases delta, epsilon and alpha from human placenta. Monoclonal antibodies to these polymerases were isolated and used as tools to study their immunochemical relationships. These studies have shown that while DNA polymerases delta, epsilon and alpha are discrete protiens, they must share common structural features by virtue of the ability of several of our monoclonal antibodies to exhibit cross-reactivity. A second approach we have taken is the molecular cloning of human DNA polymerase delta and epsilon. We have cloned the DNA polymerase delta cDNA, and this has allowed us to compare its primary structure to those of human polymerase alpha and other members of this polymerase family. Multiple sequence alignments have revealed that human DNA polymerase delta is also closely related to the herpes virus family of DNA polymerases. In situ hybridization has shown that the human DNA polymerase delta gene is localized to chromosome 19 q13.3–q13.4. In order to further determine the functional regions of the DNA polymerase δ structure we are currently expressing human pol δ inE. coli and baculovirus systems. Other work in our laboratory is directed toward examining the expression of DNA polymerase δ during the cell cycle.

    Notes: Abstract An alternative approach is proposed for the study of the non-cosmological redshifts. The approach is based on the radiation formulation of the tidal gravitation acceleration in geometrodynamics and the spacetime curvature around the massive objects. The resulting formalism can be used to study the object mass and the gravitation magnitude from the observed spectral lines with redshifts.

    Description: Stainless steels are susceptible to the localized pitting corrosion that leads to a huge loss to our society. Studies in the past decades confirmed that the pitting events generally originate from the local dissolution in MnS inclusions which are more or less ubiquitous in stainless steels. Although a recent study indicated that endogenous MnCr2O4 nano-octahedra within the MnS medium give rise to local nano-galvanic cells which are responsible for the preferential dissolution of MnS, effective solutions of restraining the cells from viewpoint of electrochemistry are being tantalizingly searched. Here we report such a galvanic corrosion can be greatly resisted via bathing the steels in Cu2+-containing solutions. This chemical bath generates Cu2−δS layers on the surfaces of MnS inclusions, invalidating the nano-galvanic cells. Our study provides a low-cost approach via an atomic scale decoration to improve the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steels in a volume-treated manner.     Description: We report a successful observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in a topological compound Bi2Te3 with Tc of ∼3 K between 3 to 6 GPa. The combined high-pressure structure investigations with synchrotron radiation indicated that the superconductivity occurred at the ambient phase without crystal structure phase transition. The Hall effects measurements indicated the hole-type carrier in the pressure-induced superconducting Bi2Te3 single crystal. Consequently, the first-principles calculations based on the structural data obtained by the Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns at high pressure showed that the electronic structure under pressure remained topologically nontrivial. The results suggested that topological superconductivity can be realized in Bi2Te3 due to the proximity effect between superconducting bulk states and Dirac-type surface states. We also discuss the possibility that the bulk state could be a topological superconductor.

    Description: Our ability to predict how temperature modifies phenology at the community scale is limited by our lack of understanding of responses by functional groups of flowering plants. These responses differ among species with different life histories. We performed a reciprocal transplant experiment along four elevation gradients (e.g. 3200, 3400, 3600 and 3800 m) to investigate the effects of warming (transferred downward) and cooling (transferred upward) on plant flowering functional groups and community phenological sequences (i.e. seven phenological events). Warming significantly decreased early-spring-flowering (ESF) plant coverage and increased mid-summer-flowering plant (MSF) coverage, while cooling had the opposite effect. All community phenological events were advanced by warming and delayed by cooling except for the date of complete leaf-coloring, which showed the opposite response. Warming and cooling could cause greater advance or delay in early-season phenological events of the community through increased coverage of MSF species, and warming could delay late-season phenological events of the community by increased coverage of ESF species. These results suggested that coverage change of flowering functional groups in the community induced by temperature change could mediate the responses of the community phenological events to temperature change in the future. The response of phenological events to temperature change at the species-level may not be sufficient to predict phenological responses at the community-level due to phenological compensation between species in the community.     Description: Introduction Many surgical techniques have been used to repair abdominal wall defects in the inguinal region based on the anatomic characteristics of this region and can be categorised as ‘tension’ repair or ‘tension-free’ repair. Tension-free repair is the preferred technique for inguinal hernia repair. Tension-free repair of inguinal hernia can be performed through either the anterior transversalis fascia approach or the preperitoneal space approach. There are few large sample, randomised controlled trials investigating the curative effects of the anterior transversalis fascia approach versus the preperitoneal space approach for inguinal hernia repair in patients in northern China. Methods and analysis This will be a prospective, large sample, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial. Registration date is 1 December 2016. Actual study start date is 6 February 2017. Estimated study completion date is June 2020. A cohort of over 720 patients with inguinal hernias will be recruited from nine institutions in Liaoning Province, China. Patient randomisation will be stratified by centre to undergo inguinal hernia repair via the anterior transversalis fascia approach or the preperitoneal approach. Primary and secondary outcome assessments will be performed at baseline (prior to surgery), predischarge and at postoperative 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year and 2 years. The primary outcome is the incidence of postoperative chronic inguinal pain. The secondary outcome is postoperative complications (including rates of wound infection, haematoma, seroma and hernia recurrence). Ethics and dissemination This trial will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and supervised by the institutional review board of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University (approval number 2015–027). All patients will receive information about the trial in verbal and written forms and will give informed consent before enrolment. The results will be published in peer-reviewed journals or disseminated through conference presentations. Trial registration number NCT02984917; preresults.
