Description / Table of Contents: Summary Before magnetic compasses are adjusted, the deviation must be determined for a sufficient number of courses. According to the method applied so far the deviation, i. e. the difference between the magnetic course and the compass course, is determined by means of optical bearings. The method is not practicable in thick weather. The control of deviation at sea by means of astronomical bearings is also frequently difficult or even impossible on account of low visibility. In the present paper, the principles of compass-systems are described which allow to determine deviation on the base of measuring the magnetic field intensity at the compass place without taking optical bearings. Like the double-compass after Bidlingmaier these constructions are based on the fact that the spreading angle which is formed by two equal card systems arranged one vertically above the other is a measure for the intensity of the magnetic field at the compass place. Since there exists a close relation between magnetic field intensity at the compass place and the deviation of the compass, the deviation may be determined by measurings of the magnetic field intensity. When the magnetic field intensity on all courses is equalized by means of ordinary corrector magnets and soft iron correctors, the deviation vanishes, and the compass is adjusted. In order to get a convenient indication of the direction of the magnetic field as necessary for the use of the proposed compass on board ships, suitable modifications must be made to the double-compass. They are described in detail in the present paper.

Description: Body condition and energy reserves are important indicators of organism health, habitat suitability and predictors for the reproductive success in fish. In Greenland waters, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) inhabits different habitats in shallow and deep parts on top of the shelf and along slopes, where diet composition differs. We investigated the influence of habitat heterogeneity and trophic niche on body condition using organosomatic indicators, e.g. the morphometric index K, hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic indices, and biochemical indicators, e.g. lipid content and fatty acid compositions, of mature female cod. Body condition differed between sites and peaked in north-eastern regions in depths below 300 m towards the slope of the northern Irminger Sea. Trophic niches as indicated by stable isotope values and stomach composition data varied between sites, which was likely related to depth and differences between benthic and pelagic feeding regimes. Total lipid content and fatty acid profiles important for reproduction were associated with a pelagic diet comprised of mesopelagic fish and crustaceans. Interestingly, consumption of capelin was not linked to highest energy reserves as indicated by traditional body condition indices, such as K and the hepatosomatic index, but lowest ratios of eicosapentaenoic acid to arachidonic acid in gonads, which are known to be beneficial for high egg production. This shows that body condition on biochemical level can differ from conventionally used indices, which emphasizes the need to take fatty acid composition into account, when investigating condition and reproductive potential in cod. Our results emphasize that the factor habitat cannot be ignored for population replenishment of the cod stocks in Greenland waters and indicate that capelin as part of an Arcto-boreal diet benefits reproductive success in cod.

Description: Ultrasonic hot embossing of polymers is an alternative to reduce fabrication costs of microreactors. An ultrasonic welding machine is used to melt a stack of thermoplastic foils and adapting them to a short-time milled aluminum mold showing the inversed design of the desired microfluidic cavities. Two micromixers were fabricated this way providing a low degree of axial dispersion and pressure loss. Stability analysis is successfully performed for a wide temperature range and high pressure. Mixing of colored aqueous solutions and neutralization reactions are implemented to both systems for defined volume flow rates and optically investigated via microscope. Reaction progress is automatically determined with a MATLAB script by reference to the consequential color change of the neutralization reaction with a color indicator. Typical mixing characteristics are identified for both mixers. Ultrasonic hot embossing of chemically resistant polymers as a simple and cost-effective fabrication method of microstructures and an optical analysis tool for tracing the progress of chemical reactions are introduced and evaluated. The simplicity of the fabrication method itself and good similarities of produced polymer micromixers with conventional ones made of other materials are pointed out.

Description: Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is one of the most commercially important fish species in the North Atlantic. Environmental factors, such as water temperatures, influence growth of individuals over time, thus forming population-specific growth patterns across climatic regions. Here we develop an integrative approach to investigate the role of temperature in shaping geographic differences of cod growth in the Celtic Sea, North Sea, Iceland, and Barents Sea. We combine a physiology-based growth model and 50-years observational temperature data of 0.5 × 0.5° spatial resolution to simulate continuous growth of cod. The model generated weight-at-age data for the period 1959–2007 which we compared to observational data from fishery-independent scientific surveys. In the Celtic and the northern North Sea, simulated growth matches well observational data. We also show that relatively warm temperatures in the Celtic Sea facilitate maximum growth rates; future warming is likely to have a negative impact on growth of these cod stocks. Growth simulations in Icelandic waters and the Barents Sea are less consistent with local observational data. More complex growth patterns in these regions are probably shaped by ontogenetic shifts in temperature regimes, feeding conditions and physiological adaptations. These findings should stimulate further research on critical processes to be considered in population-specific projections of growth of cod and productivity.
