Abstract It has been demonstrated that the mass resolution of the quadrupole ion trap, or Paul trap, when operated as a mass spectrometer, may be varied over a wide range by reducing the mass scanning rate. Mass resolutions of 3.1×107 and 1.2×107 have been observed for ions ofm/z 414 andm/z 614, respectively, obtained from perfluorotributylamine, well in excess of the normal value of 3m, wherem is the ion mass. At the highest mass resolution observed, peak widths at half maximum are but 13.4×10−6 u.
