    Description: More diverse communities have been shown to have higher and more temporally stable ecosystem functioning than less diverse ones, suggesting they should also have a consistently higher level of functioning over time. Diverse communities could maintain consistently high function because the species driving function change over time (functional turnover) or because they are more likely to contain key species with temporally stable functioning. Across 7 y in a large biodiversity experiment, we show that more diverse plant communities had consistently higher productivity, that is, a higher level of functioning over time. We identify the mechanism for this as turnover in the species driving biomass production; this was substantial, and species that were rare in some years became dominant and drove function in other years. Such high turnover allowed functionally more diverse communities to maintain high biomass over time and was associated with higher levels of complementarity effects in these communities. In contrast, turnover in communities composed of functionally similar species did not promote high biomass production over time. Thus, turnover in species promotes consistently high ecosystem function when it sustains functionally complementary interactions between species. Our results strongly reinforce the argument for conservation of high biodiversity.

    Description: Clouds and seasonal variations are key parameters that play a crucial role in the albedo dynamics of forest canopies that ultimately impact the surface radiation budget and long-term climate trends. Additionally, the occurrence of natural extreme events such as prolonged dry spells or floods may further alter the feedback loop between the forest canopy and the Earth’s energy radiation budget. Limitations such as low spatio-temporal resolution in case of satellite-based analyses and lack of continuous in-situ observations hinder efforts to quantify the local effects of forest-cloud dynamics on climatic trends. To this effect, we have established a long-term autonomous measurement system on a crane within the Leipzig floodplain area, Leipzig, Germany, operational since June 2, 2021. We present a comparative analysis of the spectral forest canopy albedo as a function of cloud fraction for two consecutive years with different climatic conditions: year 2021 with conditions close to the climatological mean and year 2022 with a close to eight weeks long dry spell during summer months. The spectral irradiance is recorded daily between 12 Noon and 1 P.M. local time and the cloud fraction is obtained from the Tropomi sensor onboard the Sentinel-5P satellite. The results indicate a substantial dependence of the spectral canopy albedo on the cloud fraction and an overall increased canopy albedo for the year 2022 compared to the year 2021, which shows the biophysical impact of clouds on forests and the feedback mechanism of forest-cloud dynamics following an extreme event.

    Description: Artificial light at night (ALAN) affects many areas of the world and is increasing globally. To date, there has been limited and inconsistent evidence regarding the consequences of ALAN for plant communities, as well as for the fitness of their constituent species. ALAN could be beneficial for plants as they need light as energy source, but they also need darkness for regeneration and growth. We created model communities composed of 16 plant species sown, exposed to a gradient of ALAN ranging from ‘moonlight only’ to conditions like situations typically found directly underneath a streetlamp. We measured plant community composition and its production (biomass), as well as functional traits of three plant species from different functional groups (grasses, herbs, legumes) in two separate harvests. We found that biomass was reduced by 33% in the highest ALAN treatment compared to the control, Shannon diversity decreased by 43% and evenness by 34% in the first harvest. Some species failed to establish in the second harvest. Specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content and leaf hairiness responded to ALAN. These responses suggest that plant communities will be sensitive to increasing ALAN, and they flag a need for plant conservation activities that consider impending ALAN scenarios.
