    Notes: The characteristics and annealing behavior of vacancy clusters in neutron transmutation doped silicon (NTDSi) were investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and photoinduced transient spectroscopy. FTIR results showed that three IR absorption peaks at 707, 742, and 776 cm−1 occurred during annealing NTDSi samples at temperatures ranging from 350 to 600 °C. By comparing the present results with those reported earlier, the defect center (we named it the P0 center) which gives rise to these IR absorption bands, was assumed to be a multivacancy cluster consisting of at least six vacancies. Photoinduced transient spectroscopy results showed that a P0 center introduced two acceptor levels at Ec−0.427 eV and Ec−0.524 eV inside the energy gap. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tn916 is a broad host range tetracycline resistance conjugative transposon. In most bacteria, this element enters the bacterial genome at multiple sites. However, in Clostridium difficile, the element has a strong hot spot when introduced by filter mating from Bacillus subtilis. In this work, the DNA sequence of the preferred insertion site (att916) was obtained. An environmental isolate of C. difficile was also discovered which contained an element indistinguishable from Tn916, Tn916CD. Tn916CD was found integrated at att916.

    Description: The chronostratigraphy of Guandao section has served as the foundation for numerous studies of the end-Permian extinction and biotic recovery in south China. Guandao section is continuous from the Permian-Triassic boundary to the Upper Triassic. Conodonts enable broad delineation of stage and substage boundaries and calibration of foraminifer biostratigraphy as follows. Changhsingian-Griesbachian: first Hindeodus parvus, and first appearance of foraminifers Postcladella kalhori and Earlandia sp. Griesbachian-Dienerian: first Neospathodus dieneri, and last appearance of foraminifer P. grandis. Dienerian-Smithian: first Novispathodus waageni and late Dienerian first appearance of foraminifer Hoyenella ex gr. sinensis. Smithian-Spathian: first Nv? crassatus and last appearance of foraminifers Arenovidalina n. sp. and Glomospirella cf. vulgaris. Spathian-Aegean: first Chiosella timorensis and first appearance of foraminifer Meandrospira dinarica. Aegean-Bithynian: first Nicoraella germanica and first appearance of foraminifer Pilammina densa. Bithynian-Pelsonian: after last Neogondolella regalis, prior to first Paragondolella bulgarica and first appearance of foraminifer Aulotortus eotriasicus. The section contains primary magnetic signature with frequent reversals occurring around the Permian-Triassic, Olenekian-Anisian, and Anisian-Ladinian boundaries. Predominantly normal polarity occurs in the lower Smithian, Bithynian, and Longobardian-Cordevolian. Predominantly reversed polarity occurs in the upper Griesbachian, Induan-Olenekian, Pelsonian and lower Illyrian. Reversals match well with the GPTS. Large amplitude carbon isotope excursions, attaining values as low as -2.9 per mil d13C and high as +5.7 per mil d13C, characterize the Lower Triassic and basal Anisian. Values stabilize around +2 per mil d13C through the Anisian to Carnian. Similar signatures have been reported globally. Magnetic susceptibility and synthetic gamma ray logs show large fluctuations in the Lower Triassic and an overall decline in magnitude of fluctuation through the Middle and Upper Triassic. The largest spikes in magnetic susceptibility and gamma ray, indicating greater terrestrial lithogenic flux, correspond to positive d13C excursions. High precision U-Pb analysis of zircons from volcanic ash beds provide a robust age of 247.28 ± 0.12 Ma for the Olenekian-Anisian boundary at Guandao and an age of 251.985 ± 0.097 Ma for the Permian-Triassic boundary at Taiping. Together, the new U-Pb geochronology from the Guandao and Taiping sections suggest an estimated duration of 4.71 ± 0.15 Ma for the Early Triassic Epoch.

    Description: Exogenous electron transfer mediators employed by Fe(III)-reducing bacteria are believed to govern the kinetics and equilibrium of bioreduction of Fe(III) in solid phase. In contrast to a large number of studies on humic substances and analog anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), our knowledge of other potential electron shuttles involved in Fe(III) reduction is limited. The purpose of the present study was to understand the role of cystine and cysteine in reduction of iron-rich smectite (nontronite, NAu-2) by Shewanella species. A series of abiotic and biotic experiments were conducted in nongrowth media (bicarbonate buffered, pH = 7.0). Fe(II) and cysteine concentrations were monitored over the course of the bioreduction experiments with wet chemistry, and the unreduced and reduced nontronites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicated that all Shewanella species tested here were capable of reducing cystine to cysteine. Either cystine or cysteine amendments significantly stimulated the Fe(III) bioreduction rate and extent. The initial reduction rate was linearly correlated with cystine or cysteine concentration. The reduction extent (18.7–22.3%) calculated from bioreactor with cystine or cysteine was slightly lower than those with AQDS (26.3%). Mineralogical analysis demonstrated that cystine or cysteine facilitated the reaction of smectite to illite as a result of Fe(III) bioreduction. Thus, we concluded that, in our experiments, cystine and cysteine functioned as electron carrier in the smectite reduction systems, and were favorable factors influencing smectite illitization.

    Description: Background: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a malignancy with one of the highest fatality rates. We reviewed our recent clinical experience with intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) combined with surgery and chemotherapy for the management of ATC Methods: 13 patients with ATC who were treated by IMRT in our institution between October 2008 and February 2011, have been analyzed. The target volume for IMRT was planned to include Gross tumor volume (GTV): primary tumor plus any N + disease (66 Gy/33F/6.6 W), with elective irradiation of thyroid bed, bilateral level II through VI and mediastinal lymph nodes to the level of the carina (54-60 Gy). Five patients received surgical intervention and eleven patients had chemotherapy. Results: The median radiotherapy dose to GTV was 60 Gy/30 fractions/6 weeks. The median survival time of the 13 patients was 9 months. The direct causes of death were distant metastases (75%) and progression of the locoregional disease (25%). Ten patients were spared dyspnea and tracheostomy because their primary neck lesion did not progress. Conclusion: The results showed that IMRT combined by surgery and chemotherapy for ATC might be beneficial to improve locoregional control. Further new therapies are needed to control metastases.
