Notes: Summary Human subjects given C14-mescaline by mouth excrete an average of 87% of the dose during the first 24 hours and an average of 92% during the first 48 hours. Average half-life of mescaline in six hours. The composition of the urine in respect to the various metabolites of mescaline from hour to hour has been determined. The concentration of mescaline and its metabolites in the plasma and the cerebrospinal fluid at the various times has also been determined. Mescaline, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylacetic acid, N-acetyl-β-(3,4-dimethoxy-5-hydroxyphenyl) ethylamine and N-acetyl-mescaline have been identified in human urine after mescaline administration in the following amounts: mescaline 55–60%, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylacetic acid 27–30%, N-acetyl-β-(3,4,dimethoxy-5-hydroxyphenyl) ethylamine 5% and N-acetylmescaline less than 0.1%. Five other metabolites have been partially characterized. Chromatographic evidence is presented for the presence of mescaline, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylacetic acid, N-acetylmescaline and N-acetyl-β-(3,4-dimethoxy-5-hydroxyphenyl) ethylamine in the cerebrospinal fluid in man after oral mescaline administration.

Notes: Summary Three series of derivatives of N,N-dimethyltryptamine, α-methyltryptamine and gramine bearing substituents of varying electronic nature on the C-5 position were tested for acute toxicity, effect on barbiturate sleeping time, antireserpine effect, swim maze, variable interval conditioned behavior, and inhibition of monoamine oxidase. No correlation could be made between the electronic effects and their pharmacological activities. It was thus suggested that there exist different pharmacological receptors for the tryptamines and gramines.

Description: The Zailisky Alatau is a 〉250-km-long mountain range in Southern Kazakhstan. Its northern rangefront around the major city of Almaty has more than 4 km topographic relief, yet in contrast to other large mountain fronts in the Tien Shan, little is known about its Late Quaternary tectonic activity despite several destructive earthquakes in the historical record. We analyse the tectonic geomorphology of the rangefront fault using field observations, differential GPS measurements of fault scarps, historical and recent satellite imagery, metre-scale topography derived from stereo satellite images, and decimetre-scale elevation models from UAV surveys. Fault scarps ranging in height from ~2 m to 〉20 m in alluvial fans indicate surface rupturing earthquakes occurred along the rangefront fault since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Minimum estimated magnitudes for those earthquakes are M6.8-7. Radiocarbon dating results from charcoal layers in uplifted river terraces indicate a Holocene slip rate of ~1.2-2.2 mm/a. We find additional evidence for active tectonic deformation all along the Almaty rangefront, basinward in the Kazakh platform, and in the interior of the Zailisky mountain range. Our data indicate the seismic hazard faced by Almaty comes from a variety of sources, and we emphasize the problems related to urban growth into the loess-covered foothills and secondary earthquake effects. With our structural and geochronologic framework we present a schematic evolution of the Almaty rangefront that may be applicable to similar settings of tectonic shortening in the mountain ranges of Central Asia.
