    Notes: This article reports on the microvoid structure of hydrogenated amorphous germanium films, as determined from small angle x-ray scattering data and infrared transmission spectroscopy, and its dependence on three deposition parameters, namely, the substrate temperature, the particle bombardment during film growth, and the partial pressure of hydrogen in the deposition chamber. The structure of the alloys depends on the first two deposition parameters and not on the partial pressure of hydrogen. The dependence of the optical gap on hydrogenation and microstructure is established for a-Ge:H films for a wide range of deposition conditions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Amorphous melt-spun Fe86Zr7Cu1B6 ribbons were annealed using the linear varying current Joule heating method. Experimental curves of resistance (R) and temperature (T) versus applied current (I) allow one to follow precisely the crystallization of α−Fe nanoparticles during annealing. This result proves that the applied current can be considered a reliable parameter to control the crystalline fraction in this alloy. A comparison between structural and magnetic measurements shows that the R(I) curve can be used as a guide to identify a condition for optimum soft magnetic properties of this alloy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A versatile, modular, and high-vacuum compatible small angle x-ray scattering workstation is under construction at National Laboratory for Synchrotron Light. It will use a wiggler source to be installed in the 1.15-GeV UVX2 electron storage ring. The white beam is monochromatized by Bragg reflection using a silicon triangular-shaped, asymmetrically cut and bent crystal. The movements required for θ rotation, crystal bending, and tilting are performed by an external goniometer and two specially designed translation stages, respectively. The x-ray wavelength will cover the range 1 A(ring)〈λ〈2 A(ring) and can be varied by θ rotation of the whole monochromator crystal and housing and 2θ rotation of the monochromatic beam path setup. The monochromator, secondary shutter, slits, sample holder, beam stopper, and detection system are stepping motor driven and computer controlled.

    Notes: Changes in the microporosity of several types of Brazilian high-ash coals have been analyzed by small-angle X-ray scattering as a function of thermal treatment. Pore size, determined using Guinier plots, decreased following thermal treatment of the samples. The modification of porosity induced by thermal treatment was similar for high-ash and low-ash coals, from which it may be inferred that mineral content is not a determining factor in the process of pore formation. Internal surface area for the samples was calculated with SAXS data. A correlation is established between the internal surface area values obtained and the carbon content and heat-treatment temperatures of the samples.

    Notes: The structural evolution of the nanocrystalline material obtained from the amorphous compound Fe73.5CuNb3Si13.5B9 was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. Four sets of amorphous metallic ribbons were produced by melt spinning using different quenching rates. Samples of each set were annealed above the crystallization temperature; X-ray diffraction analysis showed the formation of an ordered Fe–Si solid solution with average grain sizes ranging from 9 to 11 nm. Small-angle scattering curves of the samples in the initial amorphous states revealed different intensities for different quenching rates, caused by the presence of heterogeneities with dimensions larger than those of the crystallites formed after thermal treatment. In addition, scattering measurements carried out in situ during isothermal annealing showed an intensity evolution as a function of time, attributed to electron-density contrast variation caused by the atomic diffusion process that occurs during crystallization.

    Notes: A detailed study is presented on the nanocrystallization of the amorphous alloy Fe86Zr7Cu 1B6 (indices indicate at. %). Melt-spun ribbons were rapidly annealed by Joule heating, and the electrical resistance showed strong variations during thermal treatment. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that these variations are related to the nucleation and growth of α-Fe nanocrystals, and from peak profile analysis we obtained the average grain size and crystalline volume fraction for different annealing currents. The disorder-order transition was studied by in-situ small-angle X-ray scattering during conventional furnace treatments. SAXS intensity evolution for different temperatures, both below and above the crystallization temperature of the alloy, showed that a fast atomic rearrangement leads to the formation of atomic clusters before crystallization. The evolution of the size distribution function of these clusters as a function of time and temperature was obtained assuming a polydisperse system of spherical particles.

    Notes: Pine wood samples (Pinus elliottii) were heat treated at temperatures from 873 to 2873 K. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and carbon dioxide adsorption techniques were used to characterize micropore number, diameter and corresponding internal surface area (ISA) for all samples. The adsorption data showed a maximum at about 1273 K, whereas SAXS data indicated a significant decrease of ISA at those heat-treatment temperatures (HTT). At higher HTT both techniques showed similar trends. To investigate these findings further, the evolution of the turbostratic structure of all samples was studied from X-ray powder diffraction spectra. It was then concluded that the dynamics of microcrystallite growth affect the microporosity by decreasing the number of micropores and associated surface area. The increase in ISA observed by adsorption techniques is due to the creation of a large number of channels by the expulsion of volatile matter.

    Notes: This paper describes the small-angle scattering beamline built at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). Vertical focusing of the synchrotron beam is achieved by an elastically bent gold-plated cylindrical mirror. An asymmetric cut curved triangle-shaped silicon single crystal (111 reflection) is used for monochromatization and horizontal focusing. The mirror, monochromator optics and 2θ arm were designed to cover the spectral range between 1.0 and 2.0 Å. Three slit sets, a secondary photon shutter, two beam monitors, filters and absorbers, a multi-sample holder, a vacuum path, a beam-stopper and a set of detectors are the basic components of the workstation. The stepping motors are equipped with specially designed encoders. All mechanical and pneumatic movements and detectors can be remotely controlled using a direct panel or a PC.
