    Notes: For the first time in the literature, radiographs of breast phantoms were obtained using several monochromatic synchrotron radiation x-ray beams of selected energy in the range from 14 to 26 keV. In addition, after optimization of the photon energy as a function of the phantom thickness, several mammographs were obtained on surgically removed human breast specimens containing cancer nodules. Comparison between radiographs using a conventional x-ray unit and those obtained of the same specimens utilizing synchrotron monochromatic beams clearly shows that higher contrast and better resolution can be achieved with synchrotron radiation. These results demonstrate the possibility of obtaining radiographs of excised human breast tissue containing a greater amount of radiological information using synchrotron radiation.

    Notes: Abstract We herein present a study conducted on 14 patients presenting cancer of the lower rectum or of the anal canal (10 adenocarcinomas and 4 squamous-cell carcinomas) and submitted to the Miles abdominal perineal resection in which a new perineal sphincter was constructed. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of this new perineal sphincter constructed by transposing the gracilis muscles around an orthotopic colostomy in the attempt to avoid a permanent abdominal colostomy. METHODS: In all cases both gracilis muscles were employed. The right one was placed along the posterior wall of the pelvis and fixed to the controlateral ischiatic tuberosity, creating a sling comparable to the levator ani muscles. The left gracilis was passed around the colon and attached to the ipsilateral or controlateral tuberosity according to its length, reconstructing a muscular ring. The entire procedure was performed in one step in nine cases and in more steps in the remaining five. RESULTS: Of the 14 operated patients, 2 died of vascular disease and 1 developed necrosis of the colonic stump which required reconversion to an abdominal colostomy. Of the remaining 11 patients available for long-term evaluations, 8 showed adequate stool control. The remaining three manifested an incomplete level of continence. During the three-year follow-up period, all patients were evaluated by clinical examination, defecography, endoluminal ultrasonography, nuclear magnetic resonance, CT scan, and endoluminal manometry. CONCLUSION: This neosphincter realizes an elastic stenosis responsible for an efficient level of continence. Best results are observed in the young and educated patients submitted to surgery in two steps. Contraindications to this surgery seem to be advanced cancer, old age, and obesity.

    Description: A retrieval of tropospheric volcanic ash from Mt Etna has been carried out, using measurements from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The NASA-MODIS satellite instrument acquires images in the 0.4 to 14 μm spectral range with a spatial resolution of 1 km at nadir. The eruption which occurred on 24 November 2006 is considered as a test case in this work. In order to derive the ash plume optical thickness, the particle effective radius and the total mass, the Brightness Temperature Difference procedure has been applied to MODIS channels 31 (centered at 11 μm) and 32 (centered at 12 μm). Channel 5 (centered at 1.24 μm) has been used to refine the cloud discrimination, exploiting the distinct reflectivity of meteorological and volcanic clouds in the near infrared spectral range. The detection of volcanic ash pixels has been significantly improved by applying an atmospheric water vapor correction to MODIS data. This procedure doubles the number of pixels identified as containing volcanic ash compared to the original method. The retrieved mean ash optical thickness at 0.55 μm, mean particle effective radius and the total ash mass in the plume are 0.4, 3.5 μm and 3620 tons, respectively. A detailed sensitivity analysis has been carried out to investigate errors in the retrieval caused by the uncertainty in various parameters: surface temperature and emissivity, plume geometry (altitude and thickness), ash type and atmospheric water vapor. Results show that the largest contributions to retrieval errors are from uncertainty in surface parameters, aerosol type and atmospheric water vapor. The total tropospheric volcanic ash retrieval errors are estimated to be 30%, 30% and 40% for mean AOT, mean effective radius and total mass retrieval, respectively.

    Description: In this paper, a sensitivity analysis and procedure development for volcanic-plume sulfur dioxide and ash retrievals using ground thermal infrared camera have been carried out. The semiconductor device camera, considered as a reference, has a spectral range of 8–14 μm with noise equivalent temperature difference that is better than 100 mK at 300 K. The camera will be used to monitor and assess the hazards of Mt. Etna volcano to mitigate the risk and impact of volcanic eruptions on the civil society and transports. A minimum number of filters have been selected for sulfur dioxide (SO2) and volcanic ash retrievals. The sensitivity study has been carried out to determine the SO2 and volcanic ash minimum concentration detectable by the system varying the camera geometry and the atmospheric profiles. Results show a meaningful sensitivity increase considering high instrument altitudes and low camera-elevation angles. For all geometry configurations and monthly profiles, the sensitivity limit varies between 0.5 and 2 g · m−2 for SO2 columnar abundance and between 0.02 and 1 for ash optical depth. Two procedures to detect SO2 and ash, based on the least square fit method and on the brightness temperature difference (BTD) algorithm, respectively, have also been proposed. Results show that high concentration of atmospheric water vapor columnar content significantly reduces the ash-plume effect on the BTD. A water vapor-correction procedure introduced improves the ash retrievals and the cloud discrimination in every season, considering all the camera geometries.

    Description: The Changing-Atmosphere Infra-Red Tomography Explorer (CAIRT) is one of the four candidates for ESA’s Earth Explorer 11, aimed to study the coupling between atmospheric composition, circulation and climate. By exploiting its imaging capabilities, CAIRT indeed can sound the atmosphere simultaneously from the middle troposphere to the lower thermosphere at 0.2 cm〈sup〉-1〈/sup〉 spectral resolution and with horizontal sampling of 50 km along track, 50 km across track and vertical sampling of 1 km. Flying in loose formation with MetOp-SG mission allows to combine spatially resolved limb observations with horizontally resolved nadir measurements of IASI-NG and Sentinel-5 nadir spectrometers to extend limb observations down to the surface. An accurate knowledge of trace gas composition around the tropopause is particularly important to reduce significant uncertainties in projected future warming: changes in the surface air pollution and in the stratosphere-troposphere exchange may significantly affect it. Moreover quantifying the influence of stratospheric transport on near-surface tropospheric composition is important since it conditions attempts to derive emission fluxes from surface observations for important greenhouse gases. We evaluated advantages coming from the exploitation of the synergy between realistic simulations of CAIRT, IASI-NG and Sentinel 5 observations applying the rigorous approach of the two-dimensional complete data fusion. The synergistic products demonstrate a better quality in sounding both the troposphere and the Upper Troposphere - Lower Stratosphere region. Results will be shown for selected case studies involving ozone, methane and other pollutants.
