    Notes: Summary A method is described for the growth of calcium oxalate dihydrate in normal urine. Soluble chlorophyllin, at a concentration of 20 μg/ml inhibited the crystallisation and the growth kinetics of the dihydrate crystals. The inhibitory capacity of chlorophyllin was compared with previous results. Data obtained suggest that the food and drug colourant chlorophyllin might be useful in the treatment of calcium oxalate stone disease.

    Notes: Summary Oral contraceptives inhibited the growth of calcium oxalate crystals in female urine, and the growth rate inhibition depended on the dose of ethinyl-oestradiol in the oral contraceptive agent. The results suggest that the crystallization kinetics of calcium oxalate in urine could be under the control of oestrogenic hormones by an unidentified mechanism.

    Notes: Summary Kinetics of growth and dissolution of calcium oxalate monohydrate were examined in the presence of small concentrations of methylene blue. The data presented show moderate retardation in growth and dissolution rates. It was also found that methylene blue decreased the decalcification rate of calcium oxalate renal calculi. The implications of these findings in the treatment of urolithiasis are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Calcium oxalate crystal formation induced in rat kidneys by intraperitoneal injection of 4-hydroxy-L-proline were studied by chemical, microscopic and size analysis techniques. Crystal growth rates were determined at different intervals of time from the size distribution curves. Calcium oxalate dihydrate (weddelite), formed in the first 2 hour after injection, undergoes gradual phase transformation to the more stable monohydrate (whewellite). This finding emphasizes the significance of crystal transformation in the development of experimental nephrolithiasis.

    Notes: Summary The growth of calcite was studied in a gelatin-gel medium under variable environmental conditions by 2 different methods. The results suggest that the organic matrix, the temperature, the diffusion fluctuation depending on ionic concentrations, and the presence of additives exert a fine control on the evolution of single crystals, polycrystalline aggregates, and highly structured concretions of calcite.

    Notes: Abstract As a result of a continuing programme to understand better the uric acid stone treatment and prophylaxis, an investigation of the effect of pH and urine dilution on the surface charge of uric acid crystals was undertaken. A microelectrophoretic technique was employed to characterize the nature of the surface charge and the electrokinetics of uric acid crystals both in natural and synthetic urines under different conditions of pH and dilution. Both dilution and alkalization reduced the specific conductance of urine and increased the electrophoretic mobility (zeta potential) of uric acid crystals. The presence of cationic additives in diluted urine altered the zeta potential of uric acid crystals. Such findings suggest that proper control of the pH level and urine dilution as well as the surface charge at the solid-liquid interface represent an important factor in the uric acid stone prophylaxis.

    Notes: Abstract This paper represents the results of experimental study on the microstructure of uric acid and calcium oxalate crystallites in renal stones. The size distribution parameters and morphological characteristics of the microcrystals forming the stone were determined using SEM and image analysing system. Information on the fabric of the renal stones examined indicates that the mean volume diameter is 15.5 μm for uric acid and 32 μm for calcium oxalate stones. The polydispersity index γ, the shape factor Φ, and the distribution of particle shape show close similarity. Quantitative studies on stone microstructure could furnish valuable information on stone genesis.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of 3 hydroxamic acid derivatives on urease-induced crystalluria was studiedin vitro. Acetohydroxamic acid is more effective than salicylhydroxamic and gentisohydroxamic acids in inhibiting the kinetic of urease enzymatic reaction and in retarding the formation of struvite and apatite. Crystal deposits studied by scanning electron microscope (S.E.M.) and X-ray microanalysis indicated that acetohydroxamic acid favours the formation of large crystals of struvite, and less aggregation is observed. Salicyl and gentiso derivatives favour the formation of brushite together with struvite and apatite.
