    Notes: To identify markers for the everbearing gene in strawberries, 199 F1 progeny plants were produced from a cross between ‘Ever Berry’ (a Japanese everbearing strawberry) and ‘Toyonoka’ (a Japanese Junebearing strawberry) as the experimental population. The results of flowering tests produced 97 everbears and 102 Junebears. The chi-square test gave a goodness of fit for the expected ratio of 1 : 1 for everbears to Junebears, suggesting the inheritance of the everbearing trait is controlled by a monogenic dominant gene. RAPD analyses on this trait were carried out using ‘Ever Berry’ and ‘Toyonoka’. Seventy-one primers, which produced 89 polymorphic fragments between the two parents, were identified from a total of 175 primers. Five markers relating to the everbearing trait were selected from 26 of the 199 progeny plants. The remaining 173 seedlings were analysed with these five markers and a linkage map was constructed using all of the 199 F1 progeny plants. The length of this linkage group is 39.7 cM. The closest markers found, OPE07-1 and OPB05-1, are respectively mapped at 11.8 and 15.8 cM on each side of the everbearing gene.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the action of the growth factor secreted bySpirometra erinacei plerocercoids, various organ weights, body weight and head-body length were measured in Snell normal and dwarf mice after injection with the serum from mice and rats. Serum from mice infected with the plerocercoids caused significant increases in the weights of the liver and spleen, in the same manner as mice infected with the plerocercoids. However, serum from rats infected with plerocercoids did not cause significant changes in these parameters. The growth factor in the serum of mice infected with plerocercoids was stable at −20°C for at least 6 months and easily passed through the peritoneum.

The distinctive characteristics ofD. nihonkaiense were recognized in the whole figure of the hooks, especially the middle pair, and the ratio of the length of the blade: total length in the lateral hooks.     Notes: Abstract Observations were made of the biological effects of infection with plerocercoids ofSpirometra erinacei on normal female Snell mice, male chinese hamsters, golden hamsters, normal and hypox rats. Plerocercoid infection caused the strongest growth-promoting effect on normal Snell mice. In mice, this effect appears to be independent of strain. Chinese hamsters infected with these larvae showed similar growth. The infected normal rats and golden hamsters, however, showed a weight increase in the skeletal muscle only, while the hypox rats exhibited no effect at all. The elevation in the concentration of serum triglyceride was observed in all the animals investigated except for rats. Golden hamsters, in particular, exhibited a marked increase in the concentration of serum free fatty acids and total cholesterol. There was close correlation between the concentrations of serum triglyceride and free fatty acids, and the regression coefficient of the resulting linear regression equation for the experimentals was higher than that for the controls. This suggests that serum triglyceride results from an increased concentration of serum free fatty acids derived from stimulated lipolysis. The total cholesterol concentration in the serum decreased in chinese hamsters infected with larvae. The serum glucose concentration increased in normal Snell mice but decreased in chinese and golden hamsters. No difference in glycerol and free fatty acid concentration was observed in infected animals except for golden hamsters.

    Notes: Abstract With a simplified method of extracting and purifying prostaglandins, trace prostaglandins (nanogram order) were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Arachidonic acid was metabolized to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by plerocercoids ofSpirometra erinacei, the PGE2 was detected in the medium after incubation with arachidonic acid, and the role of albumin in the absorption of free arachidonic acid by plerocercoids and in the release of its metabolite was investigated. Plerocercoids absorbed arachidonic acid-binding albumin and released PGE2 efficiently. PGE2 is known to suppress the functions of mononuclear cells of the host. The selective release of PGE2 may be related to the escape mechanism of plerocercoids ofS. erinacei from the host immune system to become established larva migrans, i.e., sparganosis.
