Notes: This paper deals with the problem of the financial valuation of a firm and its shares of stock with general financing policies in a partial equilibrium framework. the model assumes a time-dependent discount rate and a general stochastic environment in a discrete-time setting. the fundamental valuation approach under the assumption of risk neutrality is used to obtain the time path of share price, the number of outstanding shares, and the value of the firm. These are shown to be the unique conditional expectations of certain stochastic processes. A broad class of firms for which the solution formula yields finite-valued solutions is characterized. the results are extended to the non-risk-neutral case. A regularity condition, which is both necessary and sufficient for the share price to equal the capitalization of future dividends accruing to the share, is obtained. As a mathematical aside, it is shown in the appendix that in the absence of this condition, the so-called stream of dividends approach is meaningless in the sense that it does not yield any financial valuation.

Notes: In this paper, we study the risk-aversion behavior of an agent in the dynamic framework of consumption/investment decision making that allows the possibility of bankruptcy. Agent's consumption utility is assumed to be represented by a strictly increasing, strictly concave, continuously differentiable function in the general case and by a HARA-type function in the special case treated in the paper. Coefficients of absolute and relative risk aversion are defined to be the well-known curvature measures associated with the derived utility of wealth obtained as the value function of the agent's optimization problem. Through an analysis of these coefficients, we show how the change in agent's risk aversion as his wealth changes depends on his consumption utility and the other problem parameters, including the payment at bankruptcy. Moreover, in the HARA case, we can conclude that the agent's relative risk aversion is nondecreasing with wealth, while his absolute risk aversion is decreasing with wealth only if he is sufficiently wealthy. At lower wealth levels, however, the agent's absolute risk aversion may increase with wealth in some cases.

Notes: The dependence of free-carrier lifetime on erbium concentration has been measured in molecular-beam epitaxial GaAs epilayers doped with erbium. A gradual reduction in the lifetime is observed with increased dopant incorporation. For a high doping concentration in the range of 1019 cm−3 or greater, a carrier lifetime of ∼1 ps is obtained. Due to the high resistivity of these epilayers, they can also be used as a photoconductive switch, with good responsivity. This leads to new and novel applications for rare-earth doped III-V semiconductors.

Notes: sturgis c. d., sethi s., cajulis r. s., hidvegi d. f. and yu g. h. (1998) Cytopathology9, 308–319Diagnostic significance of ‘benign pairs’ and signet ring cells in fine needle aspirates (FNAs) of the breastMost breast mass lesions are readily characterized by FNA with cytodiagnosis. Occasionally, benign but markedly proliferative lesions are diagnostically difficult to separate from well differentiated malignancies. We present information pertaining to the diagnostic significance of two cytologic findings observed in breast aspiration specimens, namely pairs of stripped bipolar nuclei and signet ring cells (SRC). We have evaluated aspirate smears from 219 cases of histologically proven benign (n= 114) and malignant (n= 105) breast lesions. Both singlets and pairs of bipolar nuclei and SRC were enumerated, and their numbers were correlated to histological diagnosis. Closely associated pairs of stripped bipolar nuclei were found in 68% of benign lesions compared with only 3.8% of carcinomas, establishing their presence as a highly specific indicator of a benign process. Large numbers of such ‘benign pairs’ also favoured the diagnosis of fibroadenoma. SRC were identified in 66% of histologically proven carcinomas (67% of ductal and 70% of lobular). SRC were also present in 10% of histologically benign cases. In the malignant cases, SRC were most frequently noted in a single cell distribution or within small, loosely cohesive tissue fragments. In the benign instances, SRC were most commonly noted within large fragments, and many of these cells were proved by immunohistochemical reactions to be vacuolated myoepithelial cells. We conclude that the presence of bipolar nuclei in closely associated pairs suggests benignity and aids in the subclassification of benign breast masses. In addition, the presence of SRC does not aid in the classification of tumour subtype (ductal vs lobular), and the occurrence of such cells in the proper context should prompt surgical biopsy.

Notes: Abstract Scheduling methods are proposed for a class of flexible manufacturing systems consisting of machine centers served by a cyclic conveyor. The minimization of finish time is considered as the optimization criterion. An optimal algorithm is proposed for the minimum conveyor speed (S=1) for a particular system in the class under consideration. Scheduling algorithms based on a job matching principle, that are developed for the general systems, yield good results particularly for low conveyor speeds.

Notes: Abstract Alate sexuparae were produced in cultures of the aphid, Eriosoma pyricola Baker & Davidson, on the roots of pear plants treated to induce cessation of shoot growth. No sexuparae were produced as long as shoot growth continued. E. pyricola could be cultured on detached pieces of pear root. Sexuparae were not produced in such cultures exposed to constant temperatures over a range from 12° to 27° in continuous darkness. Nor were they produced on detached root pieces with either 16-hr or 10-hr photoperiods. No sexuparae were produced when plants were exposed for 4 weeks to environmental conditions that induced cessation of growth and their roots were detached and infested with virginoparous aphids. Nor were sexuparae produced on root pieces from dormant plants from the field.
