    Description: Weaned pups and post-moult female elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) were fitted with satellite transmitters at King George Island (South Shetland Islands) between December 1996 and February 1997. Of the nine adult females tracked for more than two months, three stayed in a localized area between the South Shetland Islands and the South Orkney Islands. The other six females travelled south-west along the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula up to the Bellingshausen Sea. Two of them then moved north-east and hauled out on South Georgia in October. One female was last located north of the South Shetland Islands in March 1998. In total, eight females were again sighted on King George Island and six of the transmitters removed. The tracks of the weaners contrasted with those of the adults. In January, five juveniles left King George Island for the Pacific sector spending about four weeks in the open sea west of the De Gerlache Seamounts. Three of them returned to the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula in June, of which one was last located on the Patagonian Shelf in November 1997. The juveniles avoided sea ice while the adults did not. The latter displayed behavioural differences in using the pack ice habitat during winter. Some females adjusted their movement patterns to the pulsating sea ice fringe in distant foraging areas while others ranged in closed pack ice of up to 100%. The feeding grounds of adult female elephant seals are more closely associated with the pack ice zone than previously assumed. The significance of the midwater fish Pleuragramma antarcticum as a potential food resource is discussed.

    Description: The cellular origin of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is still debated, although this information is critical to understanding its pathogenesis. Transcriptome analyses of CLL and the main normal B cell subsets from human blood and spleen revealed that immunoglobulin variable region (IgV) gene unmutated CLL derives from unmutated mature CD5 + B cells and mutated CLL derives from a distinct, previously unrecognized CD5 + CD27 + post–germinal center B cell subset. Stereotyped V gene rearrangements are enriched among CD5 + B cells, providing independent evidence for a CD5 + B cell derivation of CLL. Notably, these CD5 + B cell populations include oligoclonal expansions already found in young healthy adults, putatively representing an early phase in CLL development before the CLL precursor lesion monoclonal B cell lymphocytosis. Finally, we identified deregulated proteins, including EBF1 and KLF transcription factors, that were not detected in previous comparisons of CLL and conventional B cells.

    Description: The migratory behaviour of adult male southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina, from King George Island was studied in relation to sea ice coverage. Fourteen animals were immobilzed and fitted with satellite linked transmitters (Telonics/Wildlife Computers, USA) after the annual moult at their southernmost breeding colony at Stranger Point, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, from March to May 2000. The seals were tracked by Service ARGOS (Toulouse/France) for up to 12 months until March 2001. Daily data of sea ice coverage were derived from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) of the Defence Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP).The bulls moved south-eastward along the shelf margin east of the Antarctic Peninsula reaching their southernmost locations in the interior pack ice of the Weddell Sea in May 2000.Here they concentrated their foraging close to the northern sill of the Filchner Trough. This region corresponds to a divergence of the Antarctic Coastal Current which forms the southern limb of the Weddell Gyre. Upwelling in this area might cause vertical transport of organic material which correlates with increased prey availability for top predators through food web linkages. In August 2000 the remaining bulls with functional transmitters returned northwards to their breeding sites, mainly King George Island.The migration routes of the bulls differ considerably from those of cows and weaned pups of both sexes which moved westward from King George Island into the Pacific sector of the Antarctic Ocean as revealed in a previous tracking study. It needs to be verified whether such separation is maintained within and between years.

    Description: ABSTRACT:Hydrographic data and current meter records from the East Greenland Current, collected during theperiod 1987 to 1989 around the latitude of the central Greenland Sea, reveal the formation of a watermass having the characteristics of Denmark Strait Overflow Water (DSOW). The downstream(southwestward) transport of this newly formed water mass can be substantial, amounting to roughly halfof the outflow of DSOW through Denmark Strait as reported in the literature. The formation of DSOW inthe East Greenland Current results from isopycnic mixing of recirculated Atlantic Water and Upper ArcticIntermediate Water. Substantial formation occurs when the neccessary conditions for baroclinic instabilityare satisfied and the current variability due to mesoscale eddies is high; this is subject to significantchanges from year to year.
