Notes: Summary In the present work we extent the results in [RS] on CHIP, i.e. Cardinal Hermite Interpolation by the span of translates of directional derivatives of a box spline. These directional derivatives are that ones which define the type of the Hermite Interpolation. We admit here several (linearly independent) directions with multiplicities instead of one direction as in [RS]. Under the same assumptions on the smoothness of the box spline and its defining matrixT we can prove as in [RS]: CHIP has a system of fundamental solutions which are inL ∞∩L 2 together with its directional derivatives mentioned above. Moreover, for data sequences inl p (ℤ d ), 1≦p≦2, there is a spline function inL p′, 1/p+1/p′=1, which solves CHIP.

Notes: Summary In the second section a general method of obtaining optimal global error bounds by scaling local error estimates is developed. It is reduced to the solution of a fixpoint problem. In Sect. 3 we show more concrete error estimates reflecting a singularity of order α. It is shown that under general circumstances an optimal global error bound is achieved by an (asymptotically) geometric mesh for the local error estimates. In the fourth section we specialize this to the best approximation ofg(x)x α by piecewise polynomials with variable knots and degrees having a total numberN of parameters. This generalizes the result of R. DeVore and the author forg(x)=1. In the last section this problem is studied for the functione −x on (0, ∞). The exact asymptotic behaviour of the approximation withN parameters is determined toe qoN , whereq o=0.895486 ....

Notes: Abstract In recent years the problem of uniform approximation ofe −x on [0, ∞) by rational functions has found wide interest. In this paper we present a method for the construction of rational approximations toe −x that seem to come arbitrarily near to the asymptotically best one. We start with a generalization of the integral form of the Padé approximant by introducing certain real parametersa j ,b i ,k andℓ. The corresponding error function has again an integral representation and is estimated for everyx∈[0,∞) by the Laplace method. This leads to the consideration of a finite number of new error functionsφ i·j whose maxima are determined by a set of nonlinear equations and, under some restrictions on thea j ,b i ,k, andℓ, are also unique. Variation of these parameters according to a special algorithm and computation of the corresponding maxima of the functionsφ i·j shows that forn→∞ the order of rational approximation ofe −x on [0, ∞) is at least 9.03−n .

Notes: Abstract The study of cardinal interpolation (CIP) by the span of the lattice translates of a box spline has met with limited success. Only the case of interpolation with the box spline determined by the three directionsd 1=(1, 0),d 2=(0, 1), andd 3=(1, 1) inR 2 has been treated in full generality [2]. In the case ofR d,d ≥ 3, the directions that define the box spline must satisfy a certain determinant condition [6], [9]. If the directions occur with even multiplicities, then this condition is also sufficient. For Hermite interpolation (CHIP) both even multiplicities and the determinant condition for the directions does not prevent the linear dependence of the basis functions. This leads to singularities in the characteristic multiplier when using the standard Fourier transform method. In the case of derivatives in one direction, these singularities can be removed and a set of fundamental splines can be given. This gives the existence of a solution to CHIP inL p (R d) for data inl p (Z d), 1≤p≤2.
