Notes: Abstract CodaQ for Etna volcano is frequency dependent and theQ frequency pattern and the numerical values ranging from about 100 at 1 Hz to about 300 at 18 Hz are similar to the values obtained for other volcanoes: Campi Flegrei, Aeolian Islands and Hawaii. Moreover the frequency pattern and the numerical values of coda quality factor, for most of the seismically active zones of Italy are very different from those of the volcanic zones. Several studies of the location of magma chambers show the presence of magma pockets beneath Lipari and Vulcano Islands of the Aeolian archipelago and an anomalous low velocity body beneath Etna. These evidences suggest that a possible interpretation of the characteristic frequency pattern ofQ on volcanic areas is that the presence of magma can modify the scattering environment and consequently the codaQ estimates.

Notes: Abstract Digital recordings of three component microearthquake codas from shallow seismic events in the volcanic region of Campi Flegrei — Southern Italy — were used with an automatic technique to calculate the attenuation factorQ c (codaQ) in the hypothesis of singleS toS backscattering. Results show the same value ofQ for each of the three components. This result is interpreted as due to isotropicS wave radiation pattern. A check of the coda method was performed using a single station method based on simple assumptions on the direct SH wave spectrum. Single stationQ was averaged over the stations and over the earthquakes. Results show that the two methods lead to comparable results. A frequency dependence quite different from that evaluated in active tectonic regions was found for coda attenuation, comparable to other volcanic areas throughout the world. This is interpreted as due to the presence of magma that affects anelasticity and scattering.

Notes: Abstract Joint hypocenter determination is performed for intermediate and deep earthquakes of the Tyrrhenian Sea region. This analysis allowed us to obtain a catalogue of 70 well-located events in this peculiar Benioff zone, which is characterized by quite low seismic activity, compared to the Pacific deep earthquake regions. The method used for the analysis is that ofFrohlich (1979), a variant of the successive approximation technique, which allows use of a great number of events and stations but saves computer memory. The results show a spoon-shaped Benioff zone, dipping NW in the Tyrrhenian Sea to 500km depth. 32 reliable fault-plane solutions have been determined using these new earthquake locations, confirming the predominance of down-dip compression in the central part of the slab and more complex motion along the borders of the zone, as previously suggested byGasparini et al. (1982).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bericht über 3 Fälle mit cerebraler Fettembolie.
Abstract: Résumé Trois cas d'embolie cérébrale graisseuse sont rapportés.
Notes: Summary Three cases of cerebral fat embolism have been reported: 2 cases were verified at the autopsy, while the third one survived, with no sequelae, 2 showers of fat embolism. The exact diagnosis in the last case was made clinically and proved by the presence of fat globules in the urine. The pathogenesis, the pathology, and the clinical symptomatology of cerebral fat embolism are described. Particularly stressed are the clinical signs which differentiate such condition from other types of post-traumatic cerebral lesions. Mention is made of special tests which in a high percentage of cases may reveal the presence of fat globules in the sputum, urine, blood and cerebro-spinal fluid. If burrholes are performed and they fail to reveal an expanding process a brain biopsy has been suggested.
