    Notes: Changes in photosynthetic capacity of the seaweed Gracilaria tenuistipitata Zhang et Xia acclimated to monochromatic blue light were studied. For this purpose, affinity for external inorganic carbon, light use efficiency, carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) activity and content of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39) were determined in thalli acclimated to 45 µmol m−2 s−1 of blue light. Thalli cultured in white light of the same photon fluence rate were used as a control. Lower maximal photosynthetic rates (i.e. at light and carbon saturation) were obtained in the thalli cultured in blue light. Apparently, this lower photosynthetic capacity was not due to differences in affinity and/or capacity for use of external dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) since (1) CA activity did not change significantly and (2) similar values of photosynthetic conductance for DIC at alkaline pH were obtained (0.95 × 10−6 m s−1). In addition, the pool size of Rubisco was not modified by the blue light treatment since there were no significant differences in Rubisco content between white (12.14% of soluble proteins) and blue light (12.13% of soluble proteins) treatments. In contrast, Fv/Fm was increased by 11% and photosynthetic efficiency for oxygen production was reduced by 50% in blue light. This absence of correlation between quantum yields for maximum stable charge separation of photosystem II and oxygen evolution suggests that blue light promote changes in rates of photosynthetic electron flow.

    Notes: A new enzymatic amperometric sensor for hydrogen peroxide based on a modified carbon paste electrode is described. Horseradish peroxidase and ferrocene mediator were immobilized by dissolution or dispersion in a graphite-paraffin oil paste. To prevent losses of immobilized chemicals under operational conditions, the electrode surface was coated with a Nafion membrane. The device exhibits a relatively fast response time (42 s for 95% of the steady-state response) and yields currents linearly related to the hydrogen peroxide concentration over the 10-7 to 10-5 mol/L range in both static and flow injection operations. The slope of the calibration plot remained constant for more than 20 days. Flow injection assays of hydrogen peroxide at a sampling rate of about 70 injections per hour, with a relative standard deviation of 1.4%, are possible. An easy and low cost preparation procedure is described.

    Notes: A flow-injection analysis (FIA) system utilizing a horseradish peroxidase-modified amperometric electrode is described. The enzyme was immobilized through adsorption onto a glassy carbon electrode, and the system is used to determine hydrogen peroxide at submicromolar levels. The response is based on the enzymatic reduction of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of hydroquinone acting as an electron mediator. The oxidized quinone produced in the enzymatic reaction is reduced at the electrode, and the reduction current was found to be proportional to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Calibration curves were found to be linear between 2.5 × 10-8 and 1.0 × 10-6 M, and the method has a detection limit of 1.0 × 10-8 M.

    Description: Gonadal morphology and reproductive biology of the Black Anglerfish (Lophius budegassa) were studied by examining 4410 specimens collected between June 2007 and December 2010 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Ovaries and testes presented traits common among fishes of the order Lophiiformes. Spawning occurred between November and March. Size at first maturity (L50) was 33.4 cm in total length (TL) for males and 48.2 cm TL for females. Black Anglerfish is a total spawner with group-synchronous oocyte development and determinate fecundity. Fecundity values ranged from 87,569 to 398,986 oocytes, and mean potential fecundity was estimated at 78,929 (standard error of the mean [SE] 13,648) oocytes per kilogram of mature female. This study provides the first description of the presence of 2–3 eggs sharing the same chamber and a semicystic type of spermatogenesis for Black Anglerfish. This new information allows for a better understanding of Black Anglerfish reproduction—knowledge that will be useful for the assessment and management of this species.

    Description: Nine specimens of a cirrate octopod were captured during the "Valdivia" exploratory oceanographic trawl survey cruise (May and June 1981) conducted by the Spanish research ship CHICHA TOUZA in the southeastern Atlantic on the Valdivia Bank, approximately 600 kilometers west of coast Namibia. Upon examination, the specimens were found to represent a new species of the genus Opisthoteuthis Verrill, 1883, the second species of the genus described or recorded from the Atlantic Ocean. The measurements and indices used are those defined by Voss (1963, 1982) and Roper and Voss (1983). The holotype and one paratype are deposited in the United States National Museum of Natural History (USNMNH). The other paratypes are deposited in the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar de Barcelona (ICMB), and the Instituto de Investigaciones de Vigo (IIMV). The following indices were used: Mantle with index (MWI): greatest width of mantle measured between the bases of the fins as a precentage of dorsal mantle length. Head width index (HWI): greatest width of head measured across eyes as a percentage of dorsal mantel length. Fin length index (FLI): length of fins measured from the midpoint of the base of the fin to the fin tip as a percentage of the head width. Fin width index (FWI): greatest fin witdh as a percentage of fin length. Mantle arm index of the deepest sector of the web as a percentage of the length of the longest arm. Sucker diameter index (SI): diameter of largest sucker as a percentage of mantle length. Cirrus length index (CiLI): length of the longest cirrus as a percentage of mantle length.

    Description: A total of 346 individuals (152 males and 194 females) of Todarodes sagittatus caught by commercial trawlers working down to 800 m in the Balearic Sea (Western Mediterranean) was studied. Data are presented on size frequency distributions, length-weight relationships, and relationships between mantle length and various measurements of the beak. Some aspects of the reproductive biology (maturity and gonad development) were also determined. Reproductive period could be situated in the second half of the year, since the number of mature individuals was maximum from July to October for males and from September to December for females. The sex ratio was found to be significantly different from 1:1 only outside this second semester. No individual appeared in hauls performed below 100 m depth and the greatest frequency of appearance was between depths of 400 and 800 m. All mature females were caught deeper than 500 m, indicating that spawning could take place from this depth. The mean mantle length increased with depth, suggesting a possible ontogenic migration.

    Description: Some aspects of the biology and fishery of Octopus vulgaris caught by trawlers in the Balearic Sea (Western Mediterranean) are studied. The analysis of the size–frequency distribution followed the growth of specimens from January (6–7 cm ML) to August (11–12 cm ML). The sex ratio was estimated for each season and it was not significantly different from 1 : 1 in any of them. The stomach contents revealed that the octopus fed predominantly on crustaceans and fishes. Another octopus species, Eledone moschata, is present in this fishery but its catches were clearly lower than those of O. vulgaris. The analysis of the importance of these two species in relation to the rest of the commercial catch showed that octopuses represent between 20–40% of the total catch for trawlers. The highest catch rates (kg/h) were obtained in spring and at the beginning of summer. Time-series analysis of monthly catches from January 1981 to August 1996 showed two main oscillations. The lower one, with a periodicity of 12 months, reflects the annual biological cycle of the species; on the other hand, the higher one has a periodicity of 92 months, the time series available being too short to confirm the significance of this period.
